Cutting one of the hardest opals I've ever cut. Will it be a score or a dud?

  • Watch how I managed to cut this 17 gram/84 carat Coober Peedy dark-based opal from the ‪@Outbackopalhunters‬ It had multiple beautiful rich small bars that varied in size within the opal. It was pretty clean, but sand poised a problem at times as well. It was a learning experience, but it fun along the way.

What a great piece of rough. A definite puzzler, but being so large and two pieces it gave you lots of room to experiment. I would have taken hours and hours of staring at it. Very nice end stones.
PS: I do like the musical selections you chose as well.

Thanks! I studied this piece for weeks before I finally gathered up the courage to actually cut it. I'd look at it, and then throw it back into the pile and move on to something else.

At first I thought that you weren't going to get a stone out of the rough. I couldn't see any colour bars on my screen, just grey potch, so I thought. It was a nice surprise to see you getting those gems out of it in the end. I hope that you are ahead of the game after that.

With the bars being so thin, believe me, I was worrying the same if I'd get anything out of it as well. I guess it proves that you don't need a huge bar to get a good gem(s) from opal.

This was so very hard to watch. No disrespect but there was sooooo much beautiful color wasted. The oval outline on both stones could’ve been bigger. The small stone could’ve been a tear drop giving more carats. A cut down the middle of the side also could’ve doubled your gems. With play of color like this you have to plan and strategize to get the most out of the stone. Not trying to be mean at all, I just wish you would’ve thought about it longer before you started grinding. 💎
