Kinda funny that Johnny Thorpe puts down and snickered at the guys using buckets, drawing attention to the sets. In other videos, he was advocating putting smelts in soda cans and hanging them high in trees for call stations. Better trapper than I'll ever be. Just struck me funny, that's all.
New York State has several regulations on conibears when used with bait. Standard bucket sets are not legal. In New York State body gripping traps set with bait that are from 5.5 to 7.5 inches must be set either in a running pole set at least 4 feet from the ground or when set on the ground must be recessed in a box with small openings to prevent incidental catches on dogs.
@@ScottHynson-if9vn I said "standard bucket sets are not legal," which are not legal, like the ones we used to make with 5 gallon buckets with 220's 40 years ago without narrowed openings and not recessed, which is true.
@@ScottHynson-if9vn Never said they didn't work, just said "standard buckets" without modifications are not legal. Years ago I sent an email to Gordon Batchelor at DEC before there were bucket restrictions, imploring him to put the needed restrictions on buckets for safety reasons, but my message was too late. The following year changes were made. I was mad at myself for waiting.
Must be a very old video, 220 conibear traps are illegal to set on land for any animal UNLESS it is in a qualified cubby made by NYS department of conservation designs.
It's a pleasure to watch a PROFESSIONAL TRAPPER, no nonsense just smart tactics
Love this guy. No gloves worried about leaving his scent. "Just a dab'll do ya."
That hand gesture at 5:45 had me rolling.... he reminds of my father and grandfather! Lol
He had his finger ripped off when he got it caught by a nail while shoeing a horse - he really couldn’t bend that one
nice to see your posting more of Johnny. Hell of a trapper
A true Legend!

Actually buckets are legal in NY. Trap needs to be recessed 6 inches and the opening needs to be 6 inches or less
