  • In this short video I show you how to use Elastic Audio in Protools to change the tempo of already recorded tracks in a session.
Elastic Audio in protools can be helpful when trying to change the tempo of already recorded tracks.
Tempo can be key for the right groove of a song. The right tempo can help you find that groove where everything just feels right.
Sometimes you run into a problem when you’ve already recorded a song, or parts of a song and you feel like there needs to be a slightly different tempo.
You can use elastic audio in protools to help you achieve this.

Thank you very much!!! I was never actually taught the difference in elastic audio modes. I've been going to the wrong one all along and never knew about the ticks. Been on Pro Tools for 7 years and still always learning stuff haha. Thanks again!!! =)

For christ's sake, any of you care to criticize how he doesn't use the Mac clock at the top of his screen with seconds? Because only an idiot wouldn't use the clock that includes seconds. This worked like a charm for me personally and my particular project. I've tried several times in the past and those other ways and videos always ended up sounding processed. I sped up a drum track 25 bpm and it still sounded great. Thanks for the help! And all the negative comments, go write some music or something more productive with your time.

Yeah, ticks, without ticks it makes complete sense to NOT have elastic audio work, even though it is on and an agorithm is selected..... Avid what are you thinking! Anyway BIG thanks man, you saved the day :-D

Although the click sounds more cool with that shaker, the shaker attack is tricky. The ideal would be a hihat, cowbell in tune, or something with a more aggressive attack, in my opinion.

Also, Bass may be monophonic, but changing it to polyphonic (becuase of harmonic frequencies and distortion), may save you some artifact related trouble as well. At least it did for me. Very cool video :)

Great video. I have a question.
I need to speed up my song that doesn't contain vocals yet. *After* i speed it all up, and now I'm happy with the tempo, and it's time to record the vocals, do i keep everything set to ticks and elastic audio, or do I need to change it back to samples?? I'd greatly appreciate your help.

I did it recently on a track where the chorus is faster than the rest of the song. The band wanted to speed up the chorus after the recording. So I just did what's explained in the video but I edited the tempo line to make choruses faster. Works really well !

To add to what Covers and Stuff said in case someone doesn't know how to adjust the tempo of individual tracks ---- I'm currently working on a song with multiple tracks of differing tempos and this video's solution worked for me once I completed an additional step. To adjust the tempo on individual tracks, simply follow the steps in the above video and then right-click on the track whose tempo you would like to change and select the 'Elastic Properties' option. From there, you should be able to adjust the tempo of individual tracks without having to adjust the tempo on the entire song.

Thanks. Now can you change the tempo of a single clip in Po Tools 10 by typing in the tempo, or do you have to do it by ear while grabbing and stretching the single clip??

How the heck did you get the elastic to toggle on for each track? Are they grouped somehow? I select all the tracks, but just the first one enables the elastic, not the others..

After doing all this, can I use the Conductor? Because when I engage, it reverts back to the old tempo.
    And Click, is off.

This may not make a difference in this production, but if one needs to score this song the meter a bit messy.
I hear 3 beat + 4 beat in that groove at 3:43 . In this case I wonder how to do the metering properly.
Does anyone here know how to set up the meter to alternate 3/4 and 4/4 ?

Gotta learn before you post cowboy, conductor can be used to change tempo, elastic audio is something you should definitely spend some time learning about it’s not hard and your clips region is full of useless junk just hit that downward arrow next to where it says “clips” and select unused then chose clear to clean up your clips region and the session and that’s just for starters, good like I trained and received a pt certification years ago but with all the TH-cam vids you can learn the daw

Even audio played one note at a time should be set to polyphonic, since it's picking up harmonics in each note, which confuses the algorithm and produces artifacts. Monophonic really only works for pure sine waves. Really useless and misleading, but this is Pro Tools so that's to be expected for everything.
