I think the 'story' that's being suggested is she calls him in the middle of the night all loving/needy but keeps choosing the security of the relationship she's already in, despite it being toxic. Also, the other song/sound it reminds you of might be something by Train, perhaps?

BJ Thomas the lead singer of Matchbox 20, one of his number 1 hits was with the legendary Carlos Santana ( group known as Santana) ft BJ with the song "Smooth" ... at one time, Neal Schon lead guitarist for Journey and former keyboardist/vocalist Gregg Rolie for Journey played with the group Santana together. Neal and Gregg would be the founders of Journey. Interesting how many in music industry are intertwined. Definitely need some Santana on the channel. Cheers!
