    Number 1 should be a tie between can you sleep and drive the vehicle. Everyone spends many hours a night in bed and many miles driving. If either one of these is a no , then go find the one that fits. Love Bolsa Chica . Love the video.

    I am liking your videos more and more. This is excellent advice. Especially the partner compatibility that you mentioned at the outset. My wife likes 4 diamond hotels when we travel, so that I plan to go it alone. After all, why travel with someone who is not equally enjoying the experience. I might have missed it but Neil also points out that if you plan to use the RV for four seasons, check that the pipes carrying liquids are inside the vehicle to avoid freezing and pipe bursts. From what I have seen in your videos, you tend to follow the milder weather. Like you, Neil loves the Pleasure-Way as being the closest to perfection. I only wish that the RV makers would produce a vehicle for two like those in Europe and Japan. These are more affordable for us average folks and can fit in any garage or parking structure. I simply do not have $150,000 to spare, but could manage a small RV in the $60-70,000 range. The problem with purchasing a used vehicle is that you really do not know the history of that vehicle as to how it was used and what problems it has that led to someone wanting to get rid of it. I have had a few friends who purchased used nightmares and spent more on fixing things than the cost of the RV.
    One thing that you did not mention. As I walk my dog through my neighborhood I see over 50 RVs that have been sitting in place for over 2 years. People often purchase the dream RV then travel a few times and then park the thing in their yards. Also there are many RV bone yards (storage) around here that never seem to change as to inventory. Best thing to do is to rent an RV a few times and see if you are going to really like being on the road.
    I have said enough, probably too much, so thanks again for the video and I hope that the viewers heed your advice. Thumbs up, already subbed!

      All excellent points! Europe has many better options and their styling is way ahead of our "stuck in the '80's" look. I think the only used RV I would consider is the PW. We were surprised at the rally to see so many rigs over 10 years old. I've never seen any PW rentals in the lower 48 so I encourage folks to fly up to Canada and rent a PW from Canadreams. Good luck with your search!

    We love everything about your Class B except the bed. I want a separate couch and table. I am an early riser. I sit at the breakfast table while my husband stays later. Your bed looks difficult to make. Even the lady at the meet up had words that said how easy it was. But her body language and sounds said making the bed was so hard. It’s great and I loved how sturdy it was and the camper easily navigated McCarthy Road.

      I think it is the nature of all Class Bs (unless it is custom made). The B+ looks like it would be easier and certainly gives some separation for those with different sleep schedules.

      From She to Me my trade was REFRIGERATION & air conditioning, , A company that I. Worked at twice , was a NY, CO, but I worked for them in NJ, mostly , every 8 weeks or so, you worked the week, but on FRIDAY you picked up night service then called in about 1 pm , picked up again but there was 1 store 75 miles away , you could go there EVERY NIGHT , the power company was doing work a few miles away, so they lost power , 5 fuses,reset ALL the computers for energy management , get them going , anyhow it was nothing to do 1500miles in a week , they wore out vehicles, as did I, my 1991 FORD TAURUS went 430 k, #5 cylinder had low compression , , take care& it will serve you well, Cheers From NJ🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

    Nice job ! You covered everything that really matters. FYI- Have a pleasure-Way , wanted to state how Bathroom for us was big , so we purchased a B+. The extra (wide) concerned us at 1st , however it's turned to be a winner for us and the extra size driving has not become an issue at all. When I was thinking about the bathroom, I turned to the fact I have many bathrooms in my current home and realized this would be hard to give up when traveling. Also think about a lightly used RV, we purchased ours with 15K miles (2014), now has 26K and very happy with the quality of the PW. Nothing has caused a problem, in many cases it was us not understanding how to use the item when we did have a problem ( NB-learning curved). BTW- our Regfr. works great we have a 2 way (Domatic) , when it's parked on our drive-way we keep the RV plugged into electric all the time. We have the RV two years and everything still working great, even the batteries remain at full charge (AGM). Once retired should we upgrade to another unit, we will only look at quality units. In-addition we found many people purchase a new RV hoping they will like this type of travel and quickly determine it's not for them, so deals can be had. Enjoyed watching, thank you !

    Great overview Debbie & John. For people looking into buying a new self contained RV. They may want to check out the European ones and import one if they want a 4 season RV that's more insulated and built just like the Mercedes chassis is. Also I'd consider the drawer type freezers or frig. due to quality and they are used in Marine applications. Anything marine quality will be 10 times better than just RV quality, due to the same shaking & pounding effect of wave action. Minimize is key to being happy with RV life. Not stuffed to the brim is a great feeling. Pack less, and buy as you go if needed. Sometimes that's more fun also.

    Don't know if you've seen 'Gone boondocking" you tube channel , but he's devised a way to recirculate shower water through 1-2 filters so you can continually shower with under one gallon of water (not navy showers but continual flow) constantly filtering the water you are showing in (even soapy water). It's interesting and can even be done for RV's like yours with tanks or outdoor van dwellers for about $100 bucks or so in modifications. So large water tanks might not be as needed on future rigs allowing you to stay out longer without resupplying shower water..

    You said that you would not want a cassette toilet, but what about a composting toilet? The nice thing about something like a sportsmobile is that a retrofit of a composting toilet is going to be much easier than in a commercial RV. Black tanks aren’t much fun either, and composting toilets do a very nice job of avoiding the need for this. Personally, I’m looking forward to the day when incinerating toilets become more widely available - will pretty much solve all of the issues.

    Great video and insight after your class B experience. We like the idea of paring down what you really need to "camp" in a class B van, even though the Ascent really well thought out as far as conveniences. One of the reasons I purchased our van is to have a mobile Plan B option to live in if a disaster occurs. Living in California makes you aware of different scenarios that would cause one to need temporary shelter. Thanks again for your thoughtful ideas and videos.

    Generally good steps even more broadly to Class Cs at least. Travel style is a Huge determinant as you mention. I am not sure about the selection bias you mention. It is amazing how many people buy 2-3 RVs within their first couple of years and if you follow RV forums you may think that everyone hates their rigs when they are just troubleshooting the inevitable problems. Take them with a grain of salt. Renting first is a great suggestion. We rented two RVs before we decided- one gas and one diesel. RVShares is a great resource for this.
    We are still happy with our purchase decision after 2-1/2 years but wish we had insisted on a tankless water heater (I knew better).
    One other step to consider is whether to buy New or Used both in terms of depreciation and working out the kinks vs. use, maintenance, and storage by previous owners.

    Great video, especially for those still considering the best RV to get. We've been looking at all your points, and you are so right that you need to consider your own mindset... your families needs (including pets) are what really drive the decision making process more than anything else. Although we would only get a Class B, I can see where Class A and Class C RV's would be the choice of many. Our needs and wants are different from someone else's!
    Regarding diesel, regrettably, B20 biodiesel has become the rule in Illinois, and 15 other states are mandating high biofuel content (Colorado is 20%, Massachusetts 15%, Minnesota B20 to B100, Missouri B20, etc.).
    Older diesel engines are apparently doing well with biofuels, but newer engines not so much. Not sure why though. Still researching that.
    As per Mercedes Sprinter Manual, "Continuous use of fuels with bio-diesel content over 5% (B20 fuels) can lead to fuel filter clogging." Mercedes is saying to "Fill up with fuels with biodiesel content of 5% (ULSD) or less, whenever possible".
    This is unfortunate, as we were really interested in the Ascent. I'm sure at some point, Mercedes will find a way to fix this issue, but until then, well... no diesel for us.

      From She to Me : Hi, “ not sure about the term smoother, however I would describe having dualies in the rear of the 24 foot van as enhancing the stability of the van. A good example is cross winds or passing big rigs on two lane roads. There is still more rocking entering and exiting driveways that can be minimized with a tweek of the front and rear suspension. We’ve been camping for 26 years. Started in tents, then pop up, 23 ft travel trailer, now 25 ft with a slide out. I’ve heard insurance on a Class C is very pricey. Our short Class B is perfect for us. We can park it in a normal size space, it carries everything we need, our HOA allows us to park it on our driveway, it is our 2nd vehicle so we can use it if one of us has the car, it retains its value better. Hardest part is figuring out that you don't need all that "stuff" you might take in a larger vehicle. It really depends on your needs and how you want to use your vehicle.

    I am within weeks of buying a class b and am only concerned about storage. I need to carry bikes, backpacks, maybe a few camp chairs and a small grill. Do you have thoughts on this? Maybe an aluminess bumper/bike rack? I love the build quality of the pleasure ways. Thanks!

    • @FromShetoMe
      @FromShetoMe  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, if you can afford the aluminess products then that is a good solution. Also consider how heavy your bike is and whether you will be able to lift it on top of the box (which I think is where it is carried). If you are traveling solo, then there is plenty of storage IMO. And if you are getting a Mercedes chassis, then the cab shelf should help tremendously.

      From She to Me thanks so much and yes im getting the ascent! Ill be soloing most of the time and completely forgot about the cab shelf. That may solve most of the storage issue. The bikes can go on a hitch rack! Now to find the van! They’re hard to find! Thanks again! Love the videos!

      I'm not an expert but I think it is exiting that they are now building on the Ford chassis and I love that it has a compressor refrigerator rather than absorption. They built a bunch of these for Canadreams, the rental outfit, so they must have gotten some good feedback from that experience. PW has the same build quality throughout their line.

    Other than the driver's seat not able to fit Jon if it had would you have considered the LEXOR TS or FL model as I am looking at the Lexor FL?

    • @FromShetoMe
      @FromShetoMe  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I really liked the Lexor bathroom and the fridge is much larger. But the one they build now on the Ford chassis has a compressor style fridge which would definitely be interesting to me.

    • @robertpumphrey5122
      @robertpumphrey5122 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Totally agree as I like the bathroom with the residential style sink and the silver bowl. I too would be full-time and the larger refrigerator was appealing to me. However, it was the extra living room space with the Front Lounge is very attractive as I plan to travel alone most of the time, but when I do invite friends and family members I like the extra living area.

    Cognitive residence I think is what you were thinking of about people saying positive things to themselves about their purchases. You mention that it is “this 11,000 pound beast” but are you sure that it weighs that much? I thought the maximum weight capacity was 8500 pounds.

    • @FromShetoMe
      @FromShetoMe  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      PW gets it from Mercedes at around 8500 lbs then adds their components which weigh approximately 1400 lbs. That leaves 1125 for humans/water/gear for a grand total of 11,030.
