  • Dipsey Divers set on wire line is one of the most effective ways to take summer time Kings! One of the most popular questions on our TH-cam Channel is "How do you rig and fish Dipsey Divers correctly"? We have been crushing the Kings during the "Hot Zone" period which encompasses late June through early July. A big part of our program is running Wire Dipsey's. The Kings are hitting and it gives us a perfect opportunity to do this segment. Check it out and get the Dipsey Divers in the water!

    It is wire line. Generally 30-40 lb. test. The purpose is to get the presentation deeper., The wore line let's the angler acheive a greater depth than with monofilament.

    Good video about dipsy divers. Thanks. Nice plug for my old buddy George Kogut too, lol. Used to fish out on Lake Ontario with him about 30 years ago. We had a mutual friend of mine from High School is how I met George. We used the dipsys early Spring back then I believe. We used to hang out every weekend. Wished him a happy Retirement last year from Corrections. Good luck fishing and thanks again for the video.

    Hey Bill, I'm a Canuck fishing on the north shore east of TO. Been watching your videos for years, love em'. I've been running mono on my dipeys (self taught a few years ago, still working out the kinks), and just lost 6 fish on them last weekend (probably due to the stretch), 4 of them hogs. My rods aren't specific dipsey rods, but downrigger rods. Would wire mess up the eyes on the rod if it isn't a dipsey rod? Would like to switch to wire, but thinking braid would be better on the eyes.

    • @BillSaiffOutdoors
      @BillSaiffOutdoors  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Braid will be better on the eyes however, braid is very thin so Fresh Water Fleas can gather on it very easily. Should you choose to go to wire.......you can add a "twili tip" to your rods to protect from wire abrasion.

    With the different sizes of Dipsey's out there, how much line do you let out from your rod to get that dipsey to the depth where it's supposed to run? Will be trying the Dipsey's for the first time for salmon this spring when they will be still shallow before going deeper during the summer. Thanks Bill

    • @BillSaiffOutdoors
      @BillSaiffOutdoors  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Jay, the general rule of thumb is a 3 to 1 ration. However, line diameter, speed and setting (dipsey) all have bearing on depth. Generally if you want to fish at 70ft. you need to have 210ft. of wire out.

    So do you run wire straight to the dipsy, or do you have a leader between the wire and the dipsy?

    • @BillSaiffOutdoors
      @BillSaiffOutdoors  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The wire goes straight to the Dipsey. Leaders run from the Dipsey to the bait.

  • @keithwellman1294
    @keithwellman1294 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Also, how much wire with a dipsy? Do you do 300, 200, 180, or 150 when using wire on dipsy?

    • @BillSaiffOutdoors
      @BillSaiffOutdoors  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Generally, the wire is set for the approx depth that needs to be achieved. The starting point is generally a 3 to 1 ratio. To achieve 50ft of depth, the angler uses 150ft of wire. To achieve 80 ft, you must let out 240ft of wire. Variables like speed, Dipsey setting and current will have an effect on this ratio.

    ok.....here's a question...I'm having kings slam my divers and catching quite a few but many times a king hits and as I pull the rod from the holder the fish gets off....happens mostly the past few days on flasher fly combos.....any suggestions?

    • @BillSaiffOutdoors
      @BillSaiffOutdoors  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      BMK That drives all of us nuts! Sometimes Divers are just tough to contend with and we go through periods where we lose alot of fish. I don't really know what happens during these times? My guess is that they are just biting light. When those Kings are hooked in the end of the nose, the Wire is so unforgiving that I think it simoly tears out. I only run enough drag to keep the wire from slipping off the reel while trolling. When they hit, they can take lots of line and get away from the boat. When I think we have run some of the fight out of them, I tighten things up a bit and work them in.

  • @curtispuckrin3074
    @curtispuckrin3074 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Whats the ratio or formula you use to set the baits at a depth. I'm struggling to find a baseline to set my divers. I have been using a 3-1 rule for #1 divers on a 3 setting so to get down 70 feet - i set it around 210.

    • @BillSaiffOutdoors
      @BillSaiffOutdoors  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You are right in the ballpark Curtis. Generally when we are fishing fast for Kings (2.5 knots and above), I will run the Diver on a 2 1/4 - 2 1/2 setting. This will help keep your Divers down in the water column. As you know, this is not a perfect science so we experiment until we find the right combination. The 3 to 1 ratio is a great place to start.

    Why the snubber?

    • @BillSaiffOutdoors
      @BillSaiffOutdoors  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Snubber takes the shock of a big King strike. Wire line has no stretch so Big Fish have a tendency to break the Fluorocarbon tippets on the strike. The Snubber buffers the strike and keeps the fish on.

    • @BillSaiffOutdoors

      Sometimes, we have to hand line the Kings when they get to the back of the boat. It can be cumbersome but the extra strikes are worth it.

    I was put fishing the ocean here in vancouver over the weekend with a few friends of mine. None of us actually know what were doing but we did manage to get into a few undersized fish and one fish over 29". Now we seen a whole bunch of boats way way off shore and decided to venture out and see if they were fishing for salmon and sure enough they were. Everything i read says you want to aim for water 40-150 feet deep for best trolling. But where everybody was the depth was over 600-800 feet deep. We talked to one boat the made a hand gesture to our question and they had landed 5 keepers. We fish 130-175 feet deep and were catching small fish. What i want to know is how do you judge what depth to fish in water like that and are your trying to always troll with the current because we kept popping our lines out of the clips any time we tried to troll against the current. I am open to any and all information thanks for everyones time.
