Some just think youre using the word to mean a well written song, others if its a song you can improvise and get all noodly technical with like a 'jam band', or if its a song that they like personally, well written or not, and others see it as meaning that you can rock out at a party with your friends.
I say this without any exaggeration but kd Lang is the best singer of any type of music I have EVER heard. And I LOVE Music ( I am a musician composer singer myself). I love Bach, Mozart, Elvis, Cab Calloway, Billie Holliday (kd's only true competition for me in the lady sings dept), Beatles, Neil Young, Dylan, Tom Waits, David Bowie, The Doors. She is the most underrated singer in the world period. SO MANY beautiful songs and covers (my fav LP is the 'Songs of the 49th parallel')! She is even better than Sarah Vaughn, Aretha Franklin and Ella Fitzgerald, better than even her heroine Patsy Cline who she outgrew and out evolved. *I have seen hundreds of Concert in my life, The best 3?? Easy. Led Zeppelin at Knebworth 1979, Grateful Dead in Oakland Calif 1981, Kd Lang Stockholm 2012!*
I can't remember that (I was very high on Red Lebanese hash I used to bribe myself to the very front of the stage). It was huge (200,000) and packed and an all day event. I Do remember the act before Led Zeppelin was Todd Rundgren (very good). I stayed at the back 'picknicking' until Todd and then went forwards to see my life's concert; no regrets!. I do also remember the New Barbarians as a band now you remind me but not if they were there:

Sorry to totally disagree with you, but there is NO WAY that kd is better than Patsy Cline. And in the "lady sings" dept there is NO WAY that you can call Billie Holliday her "only true competition". Billie HAS no competition!... kd lang is a great singer and has no competition in this modern era, that is true. However, you are comparing her to individuals that come from an "unearthly" sphere and shouldn't be called in question. They were gifts from God and taken too soon from us. kd is way too earthly. She is a good taste of what these people were and represented and she's what has been given to us today. But let's not kid ourselves. I think we all get way too excited when we find an ounce of talent in the music world today and we all have a very bad habit of making comparisons. The muses of the heavens gave us about 100 years of greatness in the entertainment world, in all fields (movies, music, TV, art, etc.), not counting the great classical composers of Europe of the earlier centuries. And now, rather than discovering new ones, everyday we get news that one of them has actually passed away. Again, God gave us these things and slowly they are being taken away and it will take milleniums to get them back....maybe.... Unfortunately today our task is to confront the serious problems of the world, the terrorism, the refugees, the climate changes, hunger, recession, etc. So all we can do is enjoy the memory of the "legendary greats" and appreciate what we have today that is good.
