Truly an end of an era and a powerful track as a send off. Much has been lost... loss that will continue and those that make it to the end will be forever changed. The darkness of night slowly engulfs us yet still there is a light of hope, not yet snuffed out.

Honestly, this whole cutscene hit like a truck. So much to unpack for both old alpha/beta/day1 vets and new lights alike and it really does feel like the marker of the turning point Lightfall is leading us to and of course Salvatori and crew brought their absolute A game to the scoring of this moment.

As I mentioned, Eramis doesn't want to do this. She looks back at the door that you were trapped behind earlier, there's a faint hope you stop her.
She doesn't want to work for the Witness, but the people of House Salvation are at his mercy if she opposes him. Everything Eramis does, is for her people.
She wants there to be justice in what she is doing, but in truth she knows there isn't. "For Riis" is more directed towards herself, there's too much hesitation for her to want to do this.

And i vowed that when i beat the witnesses face in with my titans fists i will be wearing that title, and the ship he gave us after. That final dialogue from him broke me. I used to be biased against Rasputin as the "machine who doesnt listen but to himself" but this season changed all that. I came to respect him as an AI and then, as his own being. Loosing him was probably more impactful to me personally than loosing anyone else in the game so far.

Something that Shadowbringers and Endwalker taught me: Being predictable? Being able to call what will happen? This is not a bad thing. What matters is how it affects the characters in the story. How do they treat it. How does it hit them. Watching Ana collapse as what she just did unfolds in front of her was hauntingly beautiful.

I'd say this shines best with SHB SPOILERS: Graha. We knew he was the crystal exarch, at least if you did the crystal tower raids, but it didn't make that moment where he was revealed and we could say his name hit any less emotional. The music then just like in this scene is just pure perfection too. It really elevates the experience with how it conveys the scene's emotion through the pieces.

Final Dawn sounds very angelic, and as you said its like funeral march. The Seraphim are the highest ranking angels, Gods closest soldiers. Rasputin named his closest companions the Seraphs. Its almost as if the Seraphs, the angels, are guiding Rasputin to the afterlife with their angelic choir. With Ana, perhaps his closest Seraph, unplugging him.

I still remember The Last Array very vividly. Some may look back to that mission and think of it as the prime example of the much complained about "Defend Ghost" gimmick.
But to me? That moment when the score "The Last Array" starts playing, and the Hive ships tear their way into the arena, was really special. That was the first time we reawakened Rasputin, as well. Who knew opening up that rickety-ass communication array would lead to such an impactful moment almost 9 years later.

I was in absolute shock when I saw the cutscene. Mithrax' plea to Eramis, Rasputin's sacrifice, Ana immediately breaking down and Elsie being there to comfort her. Then the Traveler, who was seemingly leaving us, decides to stay in orbit above Earth, referencing the very first Destiny promotional poster. (3:17 in the video) I don't think I've felt such a wide range of emotions in such a short time before. Whether the Traveler chose to stay because it did truly have nowhere to go, or perhaps because it recognized, in Rasputin's sacrifice, the Speaker's words (Devotion inspires bravery speech), Eramis' beliefs have once again been shaken and tested, and it doesn't seem like it'll be long until she betrays her master. Then loading into the Tower, seeing the empty space where the Traveler once hung. I don't think I'll ever get used to that. That, along with Final Dawn starting to play, gives me the sort of disbelief of 'did this actually happen?'. And then again, as the track progresses, it gives off the vibe of perseverance, as if saying 'we have lost a great ally, an even greater friend, but we must keep going, so that his death may not be in vain'. And then, finally, the track comes to an end with the theme of the Darkness, telling us that we know who we must face. This cutscene and this track were both absolute masterpieces, and I am so hyped for Lightfall!

You can tell someone who has played this franchise by their reaction to the Traveler moving. Every person, including myself just straight up shock.
As someone who was a teenager when Halo came out and I even played Marathon, this single cutscene feels like the culmination of everything Bungie has learned as a studio. This is the best cutscene, for me, in all of Bungies history.
Whoever was in charge of the scenes with Ana absolutely nailed her anguish. Makes me tear up seeing it.
Also of note: The Fleet of Pyramids was passing Jupiter. Which means since the last time we saw them, they've made it past all of the outer planets and are now on our doorstep. Let's go Lightfall!

Lorewise, I love that there are two potential reasons that the Traveler stayed: The one The Witness believes ("It has nowhere else to run"), and the idea that the Traveler recognizes Rasputin's, and in part Ana's, sacrifice ("Devotion inspires Bravery, Bravery inspired Sacrifice, Sacrifice leads to Death"). It is one of those ways that either or neither or both could be true, but it isn't written as something that feels pedantic or even almost... snobby? I appreciate that.
Also, the little things in this cinematic, mainly Eramis's hesitation before finally going through with it at the silent warning by the Witness, and the sheer sorrow from Ana throughout it just really make this cutscene so much better.

There is also the interpretation that the Traveler never intended to flee and instead rose up so that when the Warsats did fire the Last City wouldn't be collateral damage. By staying up at a higher altitude it draws any attack directed on the Traveler itself away from the City far below.

Thats been changing since just after Beyond light, Bungie has been putting so much more care and effort into a lot of aspects of the game, and this finale is only as good as it is because of the long as hell road to get here. One thing that's really hit me over the past 1-2 years musically is that every piece of music that references the light, the guardian, the traveler, they've all either become more muted and sombre, or paired up with an equaling track from the darkness. As we are meeting our match with the Witness and his disciples, we're seeing a lot of self-doubt in our ability to handle these threats, doubts in the Traveler and its motives, in what we're fighting for, and it's incredible to hear. Zavala's and Ikora's messages post-finale really hit that home. The Audio team at Bungie really knocks it out of the park every single release.

When watching the cutscene, I immediately recognized those notes, here recast in a foreboding tone as we don't yet know at that point in the cutscene whether the Traveler will flee, be destroyed, or stay. It gave me instant chills - a perfect illustration of the power of leitmotif.

I didn't even play d1 back in the day, played d2 first and went back to d1 around 2020. When I saw that shot I was actually holding back tears. the music was so beautiful, yet depressing. we've known the traveler for 9 years. And now it's backed into a corner, and the enemy, who's caused us so much torment for so long, is about to win. We've known rasputin for a long time too, and he sacrificed his life to save the traveler. Everything we once knew has ended, the old era of destiny is now over. We are now marching onward to the final battle, and even though I haven't been here for the 9 year road, I feel like this game is a part of me now. It's like halo for me, except this saga may end on a good note.
I am beyond hyped for lightfall...

3:18 I wonder if they had this planned since D1.. This scene.. It's from Destiny 1 way back when at the end of trailers as well..
I wonder.. If it was a foreshadow... And we never caught on.. Or some sort of something.. I don't even know.. Somewhere deep down I want to believe it meant we were going to face some sort of doom in the future... but hell.. that scene was always powerful... This standing image of the traveler seeping light from beneath to the earth and back.

This genuinely was breathtaking. An excellent way to end the year and honestly, I don’t think they could’ve done it better.
The music, I’m addicted to it. It’s got this powerful feeling of sorrow and anxiety as we question what the heck the traveler is doing, and for those feelings to be replaced with relief and dread when we realize that the traveler isn’t leaving, but taking better ground for the battle to come. Like you said, it’s like a funeral March, be it for our tumultuous peace, Rasputin, or both. It’s incredibly powerful with its direction and emotion it invokes. I’ve been playing this game since D1 beta, and to see the traveler leave like it did, and for the scene to pan in such a way to deliberately show the initial art of Destiny 1 all those years ago- it’s the end of an age. Makes me realize how old I’m getting lol
As always, glad to have a place where I can appreciate this music with other people, excited to see what you thought about the witch queen

Hey Marco, I love that you give attention to this franchise. Destiny series as a whole is a treasure trove of music, but it almost never gets attention outside games own fans, almost no mainstream appreciation or mentions during music related discussions. I'd also love for you to eventually get to Destiny (2014) vanilla music, I'd say it got a somewhat different vibe compared to following instalments, and I'd love to hear trained musicians' opinion on this, especially on Music of the Spheres, it completely stands out on its own. Forsaken OST is also another high point.

This piece is amazing, though I was surprised they didn't use The Tribulation. And that reveal of the D1 cover art hit so hard.
Also, is it me or does the start of 7:18 sound like the beginning / main theme of Bow to No One?

I agree it does sound very similar my guess is it's put as a callback to distinguish the fact that our guardian using both light and dark treads the line and truly refuses to bow completely to light or dark

It was a funeral March in a sense. It was Rasputin's dirge. Bungie made me care about him so much this season, and his death heavily hit me, when in D1 I would not thought that I would care about him so much, and when he said "Ana, it's time", the way he said it, the setting, and the music, made me cry. The whole scene really made me question. We stopped the warsats, but at what cost? Eramis thought she was genuinely playing the hero, just to realize that she was played. Information was kept from her. The witness knew the traveler had nowhere else to run and was staying, but getting ready to probably fight, but kept that info hidden from her so she tried to use the warsats to shoot it down so it would not abandon anyone. That can be seen by her shock at realizing it was not running away. Rasputin, in one season, became one of my favorite characters. Rest in peace Red.

As we reach the final hour, let the Light within us burn to the very end. Let our Light overflow. Let us be burnt to cosmic dust if it means we prove the Witness wrong. To avenge Rasputin. To shine as the Traveler once did.

This was one of the moments that reminded me why I really love Destiny. I am personally a person who is pretty invested in the lore and seeing the traveler start to go out to get milk was terrifying. I was thinking “oh my god, are we about to become the next fallen?” And then, as soon as Rasputin made his sacrifice to save the traveler from being shot down, it chose to stay. I don’t know if it’s truly because it has nowhere else to go or if it sees something special in humanity. And afterwards hearing both Zavala and Ikora express that the road ahead could very well lead to the end of humanity and that we should spend time with the people we care about. It was tough. I love this game.

I have been with this game from the beginning with the original E3 2014 Alpha and this cutscene felt like the perfect culmination of the series so far and the turning point as we move into the end of the saga that has defined the game for almost a decade. We just lost one of our first major allies we met in d1 beyond the tower/Vanguard. The traveler is no longer standing vigil over the city and while we had pyramids in the system already, now, the Black Fleet is here in force and it is time for this conflict to escalate from individual clashes with unrelated parties or smaller factions of followers of the Witness to all out war with the full might of our true enemy

Shit hit hard... Especially this... The Traveler is this icon.. the icon you've seen since day 1 Destiny 1. I've always looked up into the sky in-game and saw it there.. and now it's just.. gone... Shit.. we've always wondered about it.. always wanted it to do something.. always looked up at it.. and now? This huge climax inbound. This massive action coming. The Traveler.. we finally get to see it move... And unfortunately away from us.

  • @kingjamos2422
    @kingjamos2422 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Honestly, I think this was probably the most impactful finale in Destiny 2. Those playing through Season of the Seraph likely already knew what was going to happen to Rasputin, but held onto hope that their gut feeling was wrong. Nope, it was very much correct. Before that though, we watch as The Traveler does something that we did not see coming. This was far from a minor event, The Traveler was getting the hell out of there. Then we see a very emotional scene between Ana and Rasputin as the old warmind makes the ultimate sacrifice to a musical score that very effectively sends an emotional punch to the feels. Now Rasputin is gone after finally becoming a real boy and for the first time in Destiny history... The Traveler is no longer at the Last City.
