Im the opposite. Im partually tone deaf. So 1, 2 and 4 sound the same to me. And 3 is barely distibguishable. Korean vowels are no different from how many english vowels there are. Bet and bit and bite beat. Bate. Bat. Bawl. So on and so forth. We have a ton of vowels represented by the same letter.

    • @autumn1199
      @autumn1199 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@LilyUnicorn yeah I guess but even English is not my first language and compared to Asian languages it is the easiest to learn, it takes a lot of practice to master the tones and vowels but once you get the hang of it it becomes easier. I am sure you will get better, practice makes
      perfect after all

This is for all of you out there who find it hard to tell apart similar-sounding sounds at the level of individual syllables. What you need to do is find some words that have those similar-sounding syllables, with their meaning. It would then be easy as pie to just listen to both words and tell them apart. In any language, the sentence has meaning, and this helps communicating; words also have meaning, and this also helps communicating. This is how the brain works. But syllables, just by themselves, have no meaning. There is nothing for the brain to work with. But if you have words with similar syllables in them, you can repeat them to yourself, and this gives your brain several elements to work with: the sound of the syllable you are trying to tell apart from a similar-sounding one, the sound of the words, the meaning of those words. It's easier to correct the sound of a syllable in a word you do not pronounce well than to correct two syllables the sound of which you can't even tell apart.

    Some help for everyone!
    1.
    ㅏ Romanized: “a” | Sound: “ah”
ㅑ Romanized: “ya” | Sound: “yah”
ㅓ Romanized: “eo” | Sound: “oh”
ㅕ Romanized: “yeo” | Sound: “yoh”
    ㅗ Romanized: “o” | Sound: “oh”
ㅛ Romanized: “yo” | Sound: “yoh”

(Tip: For ㅓ/ㅕ move your jaw back as you say it, for ㅗ/ㅛ keep your jaw in the same place the whole time [the ㅓ will sound kind of like “oh” mixed with “uh” maybe?])

    ㅜ Romanized: “u” | Sound: “ou”
ㅠ Romanized: “yu” | Sound: “you”

(Tip: For these, think of the English “you” but kind of shorten it a bit. When we say “you”, the hole of our lips gets smaller [idk how to describe it, like the lips get closer and close a little??] so when practicing saying ㅜ/ㅠ, say the English “you” and then keep your lips in that position and say “yuu”/“yu”/“yū”)

ㅡ Romanized: “eu” | Sound: “ou”

(Tip: Similar to ㅜ/ㅠ, except the “uh” sound is a bit stronger)

    ㅣ Romanized: “i” | Sound: “ee”

    (Tip: Like the letter “E”)

    2.
ㅐ Romanized: “ae” | Sound: “eh”
ㅒ Romanized: “yae” | Sound: “yeh”
    ㅔ Romanized: “e” | Sound: “eh”
ㅖ Romanized: “ye” | Sound: “yeh”

(Tip: For ㅐ/ㅒ, widen your checks as if you’re smiling, for ㅔ/ㅖ, lower your jaw as if you’re shocked [as you’re pronouncing them btw - goes for ㅐ,ㅒ,ㅔ, and ㅖ)

ㅘ Romanized: “wa” | Sound: “wah”
ㅙ Romanized: “wae” | Sound: “weh”
ㅚ Romanized: “oe” | Sound: “waeh”

(Tip: “ㅙ” is like the beginning of “wet”, while “ㅚ” is like the beginning of “way”)

ㅝ Romanized: “wo” | Sound: “woa”
ㅞ Romanized: “we” | Sound: “waeh”
ㅟ Romanized: “wi” | Sound: “we”

(Tip: “ㅝ” is like “wah, like a baby crying, but with a short “o” sound between the “w” and the “a” [if that makes any semblance of sense], “ㅞ” is like the beginning of the English “wet”, and “ㅟ” is like the French “yes” [“oui”] or a “wee!” of excitement)

I would just like to say that none of these symbols are grammatically correct, and every one would have to have a consonant before it (for example: 마 [“ma”], 뿌 [“ppu”], 훼 [“hwe”], 썌 [“ssyae”]; if no other consonants were used, you would see “ㅇ” which used before a vowel is silent, but when used after a vowel makes a “ng” sound, for example: the “여” in “여자친구” [“yeojachingu”] which means “girlfriend” or the “ㅇ” in “상심” [“sangsim”] which means “heartbroken”.
By the way, “상심” is actually pronounced “sangsheem”/“sangshim”. This isn’t really important with the topic but I thought it was something to note.)
All in all, 한글 (“Hangeul”/“Hangul” - the Korean writing system) can be kind of complicated, but be prepared because once you’ve grasped it, you’ll wish the rest was as easy. Good luck on your Korean learning journey my friends!
(I would like to state that I am not a native Korean speaker, nor am I fluent in the Korean language, so if you notice any incorrect information or anything I can approve upon, please let me know and I will see to make changes.
With that being said, please keep in mind that while I’m not fluent in Korean, I can read and write Hangeul, so the given information is not garbage, I promise [😅] !!)

This is so helpful, thank you very much, Teacher! I'm from Bulgaria, and I'm studying Korean since a month. Reading the comments, I suppose it depends where a person is from, how difficult the pronunciation is. For example, I'm from Bulgaria, and for me Russian is very easy to learn - we have so many words, which are either exactly the same, or are very similar, the pronunciation is also easy, just much more softer. I see that for people from India, the pronunciation is way easier, than it's for me, for example. After watching(and writing along) your videos, I understand it all better, and it became much easier for me to pronounce the sounds. I wanted to express my gratitude to you, Teacher Hailey, you are helping me so much! With respect, greeting from Bulgaria!
