    On the title screen of the C64 version while you're singing along to the theme tune, you can hit the spacebar to get it to say the "Ghostbusters!" line.

    "I wonder if it's written in BASIC... It is! OK, I have a little more respect for it now." 🤣The underwhelmed look on your faces for the Coco version was priceless! If I were the author of that particular game, I'm not sure if I would have had the guts to make it public, but I have to admit, it did provide some great comic relief on your channel.

    Congrats on saying 'Zed-X Spectrum' properly. I was working on an MSX magazine when Ghostbuters (original film and game) came out. I attended a special press screening that included ghosts walking up & down the cinema aisles. Still have a soft spot for this franchise.

    Man, that 2600 Ghostbusters music takes me straight back to being 10-years old. That was the last Atari game I remember getting before i graduated to the Sega Master System. This game is such a favorite for me, not just because i've always been a huge GB fan, but because the gameplay is so unigue and fun. So much more depth than most 2600 games had. I will add that the Sega Master System version is the absolute best one to play. :)

    Great (and hilarious) video! As you may have already guessed , the Coco never had a Ghostbusters port (officially), so that was a BASIC programmers attempt at making “something like it”. (We did have a multi-voice rendition of the song that was pretty good - minus percussion - but that was it).

    I admit you get some extras on the C64 version over the ZX Spectrum, not huge amounts more but more however it was nearly twice the price for the C64 and this is where those differences show. My dad bought me this on the ZX Spectrum and even though I was rotten at playing it, I would load it up just to hear it say GHOSTBUSTERS! Because it was the first game on the ZX Spectrum that talked like that. He Slimed Me! Lol. Good times!

    Having more money to spend is a trap. You buy more expensive stuff and then you have to make that much more money by the end of the game to win it. I guess the idea is that by buying the more expensive stuff, you're able to make more money, but it never seems to work out that way.
    The PK energy detector makes buildings on the map turn pink if they're going to be haunted in the near future. The image intensifier just makes Slimers a little easier to see. The marshmallow sensor warns of an impending attack by the Marshmallow man, which can cost you big bucks if he stomps a building. That's what the ghost bait is for. As soon as he starts to form, you press "B" and he'll come to the bait rather than destroying a building.
    Every ghost that reaches Zuul, including the Keymaster and the Gatekeeper, increases the city's PK level. You prevent that by moving over them on the map, which freezes them, then sucking them up with the vacuum.
    You have three men, if two of them get slimed, or you cross the streams, you'll have to go back to headquarters. You can also run out of backpack power, necessitating a trip back to HQ. Press the spacebar in the game to see your status.
    If you've made more money than you started with when the city's PK level reaches 10,000(?), you'll go to Zuul and have to sneak two of your guys past the Marshmalow man. If you didn't, you'll get scolded for failing.
    Finally, there's a bug in the C64 version: If you position both your guys facing the same way and perfectly on top of each other, so it looks like there's just one guy there, when you fire the streams, the ghost will freeze in place.

    @allanreynolds5519 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Had this on the Atari 800 growing up. But for me, the best version is the Speccy 48k version as it doesn't have that theme tune playing constantly - which really gets bloody annoying after a couple of plays. So I normally played that whilst listening to something appropriate like Slayer or Guns n Roses! 😉

  • @Inaflap
    @Inaflap 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Are you a god? No, I'm a 6510, but I'm flanked by some big guns. The C64 version of this game is easily the best. The Z80A clocked at 3.5MHz in the Speccy, easily knocks the block off a 1MHz 6510 / 6502, but the C64 had a VIC-II for sprites and scrolling, plus a SID synth for the best in 8-bit tunes.

  • @floydjohnson7888
    @floydjohnson7888 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    And I thought the Micronix (under contract to Activision) port of "Ghostbusters" to NES was lacking. Holy *expletive*, between potential IP problems and actual gameplay, this was a CoCo-MUGGING compared to the games submitted to outfits like "RUN" or "COMPUTE!" for readers to type in.

  • @joelavcoco
    @joelavcoco 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Like Gen X, the CoCo was usually ignored, and didn't get very many official game ports. There were a few good ones in the early CoCo 3 days, and in the CoCo 1/2 era there were a lot of very good clones. This is not one of them.
    There was an official Frogger for the CoCo, but some of the clones are better. The CoCo had several excellent Joust clones -- Lancer and Buzzard Bait. I haven't been able to find any proper Joust game for the Commodore 64. I would pit the CoCo's Polaris against official Atari 2600 Missile Command for gameplay any day. That's where the CoCo's analog joysticks really shine. 'Sailor Man' is a fantastic CoCo clone of 'Popeye' that would be a good demo of what your CoCo 2 can do.
    'Demon Attack' would be a great candidate for a comparison video between different 8-bit systems, and I think the CoCo version of that game would stack up well against the others.

    The Atari 8 bit computer version was ok, but C64 was king. The ZX version was an embarrassment back in the day, it could have been a lot better, if the designers had played to the strengths of the machine, rather then attempting to port the 64 version.

    • @danielmantione
      @danielmantione 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Activision did design the game on the C64 while the movie was in production and they no clue what was in the movie up until a few months before release. Only then they could adapt the game to the movie and work on ports for other computers could start. The teams that had to do the ports for other computers had to rush in order to get their port released before the movie hype was over. Rushing normally doesn't improve quality.

  • @jeffreyphipps1507

    That wasn't really fair. The C-64 had hardware for sound and graphics that was inherently superior. Also, if memory serves the GB release for the C-64 was the authorized version. The C-64 version wouldn't have likely run in BASIC since all the hardware pokes would have made it unnecessary. It was released in binary form (cart maybe?).
    The graphics/sound of the CoCo 2 would not have reached into its full capabilities even if the program was written in ML/binary. There were inherent limitations on the sound and graphics for the CoCo 2. In the CoCo 3 there were several improvements. I'd still convert it to assembler and convert it to binary though.
    So, was it your camera or your SD card that caused you to lose footage (in another video)?

    • @joelavcoco
      @joelavcoco 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      A properly done CoCo 1/2 version of the game could have had better graphics and sound than the Spectrum version, with no color clash and a 6-bit DAC, and gameplay as good as the Commie. A Coco 3 version of the game could have had superior graphics even to the C=64, but the Commodore would still probably win the music award with the SID chip.

    • @jeffreyphipps1507
      @jeffreyphipps1507 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@joelavcoco Not without substantial coding. First, the video chip of the C-64 (VIC-II) had hardware sprites built-in. In order to do that with any efficiency on a CoCo 3, you need the CoCo 3 with the GIME chip and even then you'll need to bank switch at 8K boundaries. When displaying the "sprite" you'll need to call a routine to XOR the sprite to the screen memory (or XOR it to remove it). The CoCo 3 does have a larger pallet but the differences are negligible. Yes, the C-64 also had a hardware sound chip capable of generating MIDI compatible sound across three main channels and one additional noise channel. Given that Commodore bought/owned the chip fabrication plant that made the design for ALL the 6502 based chips - a simplified version of the 6800 - it is quite amazing what it can do. So many computer companies used it BBC, Atari, Apple, (logically) Commodore, and more. The weakness of the CoCo was not the processor, it was the thinking at TRS that building a cheaper computer meant that people would buy it. Lot's did. I would love to get my hands on the RAM expansion for the CoCo 3. My other CoCos are maxed out. Love my old computers. I've kept them good all these years.
