I love how real this is! I am both happy and nervous for you! Currently doing my own PhD thesis in Postcolonial literature and your videos have been so helpful! The practice for the defense is so real I love how raw it is. All the besttt
I love how you understand and demonstrate that oratory as a narrative tool can help refine your arguments and polish the presentation (because it uses a different muscle)! Excellent demonstration! This series has been my favorite background companion while finishing writing my book 'Zettelkasten for Fiction' -- THANK YOU for sharing this journey with us. It has been SO energizing to see you struggle and attack your project! And, whiskey... Grrrl, Right there with you!!! Giddy up from a cattle ranch in Missouri, You are going to CRUSH it!
Love that your advisor told you that supportive comment. Best of luck ! You’re going to crush your defense - deep breaths ❤ Thank you so much for this video!
Thank you so much for sharing your process! Those early attempts at talking through things is why I stopped trying make TH-cam videos. Lol! I could just never get past that phase. But I think this is such a smart approach and I see how useful it is. I'm going to force myself to do it next time I have to present my work. I love the idea of dictating it to Word! Great idea!
As a 3rd year PhD student, thank you so much for showing your process! I hate public speaking, so this was really helpful. So glad I found your channel 😊
Doing a PhD dissertation defence can be quite stressing because you will get nervous about not being able to answer the questions correctly. However, you will be fine and you will be done soon and be proud that you went that far.
Great video! I remember how elated my family was when my father completed his doctorate, a degree I proudly display in memory of him. I look forward to a post PhD reaction video and a possible "what now?" video - the professional options of a PhD?
I understand that hearing a name important to your faith being used as a curse must be jarring. I do generally avoiding swearing in my videos to make them more widely palatable, but sometimes swears slip into my speech naturally, and since I don't have any connections to religion, this is nothing more than a phrase of emphasis for me. Best of luck with your viva!
Will your defense be live on youtube or on zoom? If it’s something you’re comfortable with, would love to attend to show support! But no pressure and feel free to say No 😊
I won’t be streaming it live, no! I am hoping to record and make it available in some way after the defense, though, as long as my examining committee is comfortable with it 😊
Hello - suggestion to improve your defense. Try to limit fluff words/phrases. Yours happen to be "kind of," when you are unsure of your answer. It could work against you. I suggest take deeper breaths (not too long, but longer than usual) after conjuctions. It doesn't interupt your ideas, yet gives you a solid 3 seconds to gather your thoughts/refocus.
That's a helpful note, thank you! I have made an effort to get rid of the classic "like/um" filler words from my speaking, but didn't notice that I use "kind of." Now I'll probably notice it a lot more in my own videos haha
As I was getting ready for my defense, I also recorded myself talking - this is an incredible way to sort your thoughts and justifications. Don't worry-you'll be talking way much better than you do in preparations (adrenaline push helps a lot!! :)) I hope you'll be successful, and I wish you the best of luck!!
Thank you!! I definitely am finding a lot of use in recording myself and then watching back my responses, especially as a confidence boost when I hear myself improving haha
Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience and work. You inspire me so much!!
Congrats!!! that moment when you're finally done is incomparable. Get ready for a massive adrenaline dump, I think I slept for a week straight!
Thank you for a peak into the "messy" parts! I know we're all eager to see you absolutely crush it!

Your comment made me feel more encouraged about pursuing my degree and like it’s not going to go undervalued
I have never felt more seen so deeply in my bones than the "Jesus f*ing Christ" moment.
My viva is in two weeks so love to see someone else doing the same! Grieved to hear 'Jesus Fucking Christ!' though - He is for you.
