We already had a great discussion on this community post th-cam.com/users/postUgkxhJnQDvhQFJzdnO1FS_L56KHXar2YIoSh (hope it works) regarding these lyrics so do not feel obliged to explain or be defensive over this video. I should've posted it then but I have a weird way of doing things lool.
Metaphor or not, they were taken as they were. Context regarding EXO's storyline and lore is irrelevant to the average listener who will take things face value and may find lyrics like that triggering, like in this care because such behaviour is not just exhibited by wolves or "monsters", we hear about these horrors in reference to regular men, daily.
Let's try and be more careful with recommendations in the future.
ALSO: The two performances were blocked so TH-cam automatically trimmed it so you can view it hence why large chunks of it are missing.
Other than that, can't wait to do more EXO with Elliotte in the future!

Really wish you guys would have reacted to the whole performance regardless of the lyrics..its hands down one of their best performances vocally and the visuals are amazing. They really did great, and prove how versatile and unique of a group they are. Unfortunate we didn't get the reaction :(..their high notes...amazing 👏

@@cosmicgalaxystudio1539 I have to agree that the lyrics are not great and can be disturbing, but like you said there are songs that are way worse lyrically and straight up vulgar. I think like many comments have said, I think this song was meant for the performance and really to showcase how versatile EXO is. I think it is unfortunate she didn't look past the lyrics and appreciated the art of the performance...bc this could arguably be one of their top 10 if not top 5 performances.

for monster, the context is from the pov of a monster, it can be perceived as a fictional monster, like a wolf or a beast who will literally eat you or as a concept of a monster, depicting the toxicity. like i'm a monster you cant be with me because i'll mess you up if you look at it literally but if you look at it as a symbolism - it can be i'm someone who is toxic and undeserving of you, i'm bad for you.
same with wolf, wolf is actually from the xoxo album, which has the theme of fairytales, it's korean title is beauty and the beast/wolf. it's characterizing the pov of a wolf who fell in love with a human and if you know about those, considers them as their mate, which explains the obsessive and intense behavior. basically think of twilight but you're team jacob. lol
honestly if it's sm, most of their songs are more about other worldly concepts, concepts that are more from the fictional world. exo as a group also has the concept of aliens from exo planet. if you really look at exo title tracks, theyre mostly about love, toxic love, or cheer up and dance.

Okey , They have full context , that's why wolf never got criticism, because it was never a double meaning song ( EXO themselves cringe over the lyrics) this was more a laughstock in Korea , why? because of Twilight theme.
So the lyrics is between two wolf
    1. Who fell in love with a human girl( Luhan), Later lost wolf power.
    2. His other wolf friends, who are telling him , Human and wolf never can be in relationships , As a wolf , you should hunt her / kill her/ eat her .
You will say new fans won't know their storyline n all
See , EXO never promoted like a trend(that they will get famous over a song and will attract sudden new fans) even when they get famous for Growl in Korea , almost all of them knew EXO and their storyline , as you know they had most expensive debut that time.
But EXO is always promoted with their concept,Everything they did have connections with storyline, even their own public appearances ,For Wolf / Growl they literally had short dramas to summarize the storyline / concept of their parallel universe. So it wasn't a deep lyrics rather cringy twilight theme .
For Aespa , new fans won't suddenly understand neavis, Kawngya n all .It's more SM thing , they mostly focus on storyline rather then lyrics meaning.
That being said , EXO actually didn't liked wolf and opposed to release it but LSM decided to release it .

  • @jcoxo

I think she could've turned off the subtitles for the video and watched it that way. As a performer, she could've focus on the performance they delivered on the stage, not the lyrics that were beyond EXO's control. Baekhyun said that when there was a Wolf vs Growl vote in the office, Growl won but LSM chose Wolf because he said they had to show their performance skills first. So the song is a performance song. It's unfortunate that she -as a performer- didn't see the remix and post remix part, especially since people were asking for reaction videos specifically for those parts.

  • @mongryong6318

Not defending the lyrics but I think we need to be more understanding of how Asia and kpop works. As rookies they don't have the privilege of choosing what they sing which is why Kris left exo due to lack of musical freedom. Baekhyun also mentioned that they were really worried when wolf was released.

SM lyrics sometimes based on their theory.. like in AESPA they put "Naevis sacrifice" in their lyrics cause it's on their storyline.. same as EXO.. they put that because EXO is a real wolf and alien in EXO's theory.. it's not that deep like a murderer case of a real human thing...

What about cardi b "wap" Lyrics? What about several of nicki Minaj's songs? People praise that type of sh*t when all it does is objectifies women. People need to grow tf up and accept the fact that songs do have lyrics like this.

EDIT: I understood what was written in the community post, but still think there’s been misinterpretation. I was shocked specially when she mentioned Ted B, like… what? And I thought the creator of the channel checked the songs or videos before the reactors >< maybe should consider doing so.
An average listener wouldn’t really care to read lyrics but listen first, and when it comes to a foreign language if you want to know the meaning of the lyrics, gotta look for more than one translation.

Do Kyungsoo is just incredible in every sense. He is one of the few vocalists who can make your heart flutter and cause a storm of emotions. He manages his deep voice and sweet timbre with such ease that the same part can sound completely different "starting very roughly and ending unrealistically gently". Kyungsoo's unique voice gives each song a unique charm. I'm ready to listen to his voice as much as I want.! Even when Kyungsoo just speaks, he wants to listen and listen to endlessly, such a pleasant voice.

I am not saying that your interpretation of it is wrong or mine is right but ssly, i never had once thought it in a way it was mentioned and i had completely related it in an abstract way which is different to what some of the ppl think.

I think it’s a healthy conversation to have. A lot of songs back then had this really weird theme or possessive men over women. Which, I want to say is a cultural thing in Korean entertainment. Ex: Korean dramas having the aggressive / jealous male lead that fans eat up and really this only started being pointed out as an issue in recent years. I never liked Wolf, lyrics aside. I say this as an EXO fan - it’s healthy to point out when you don’t like something or feel something is wrong. It’s valid. That being said What Is Love is everythinggggggg

The lyrics for Wolf make me sort of uncomfortable too. And yes, this is a contextual issue, as mentioned in your post. However, SM has never done anything with consideration for international fans, or the casual listener, especially when it comes to EXO. They are a storyline driven group, and there is a reason for most of what they do. Without the lyrics on the screen, this would simply have been about the performance, and to be honest, that is all it should have been about. I understand why she was upset, since the lyrics were there, and your eye can't help but see them. I would recommend not including lyrics on future videos, just for situations like this. There are only a select few songs where the lyrics really are essential to fully appreciate the song/dance/performance, such as Promise, or Lights Out, or other fan songs like that. Title tracks...the only one they are relevant for, is MAMA (and even then, they aren't essential).

The funny thing about this whole Wolf lyrics thing...
...is that you're absolutely right about the things you're bringing up (which are still very relevant in S. Korea today), but at the same time I don't Wolf is about that at all, BUT at the same time Wolf has some of the worst, most notoriously cringe-worthy lyrics in kpop.
It's like you're trying to hammer a square peg into the wrong hole, but the wrong hole also happens to be square-shaped so it kinda works out anyway even if it's not exactly the thing.

I love and respect y’all for including the discussion on those lyrics and leaving them on to determine whether or not to continue reacting, especially as such themes could be triggering for viewers who may have gone and looked it up themselves with no heads up. Message & theme are just as important in art as performance or execution, and I imagine the reason people are so comfortable separating a part of a song as integral as THE LYRICS from the finished work is because it’s the foreign part, which… yikes 😬. No one should be chastising you because you didn’t ignore the parts of you that were deeply bothered by this for the sake of commentary on songs nearly 6 and 10 years old. As a professional and as a reactor, y’all input is always greatly appreciated no matter what it is or how you reach it. 🙏🏽
