    Thank you so much for this valuable video! Can I ask a question? Did you make your own short cut key for the "Expend" function
    at 4:07?

      Yes, actually! Usually I try to mention it in the video; sorry about that!

    Hi Anne, I am facing some issues with typing special characters in Illustrator CS6, earlier while typing in the text box I was able to access special characters by clicking on the keyboard shortcut from the menu bar on the top right-hand corner > show emoji & symbols > bullets/stars or pictograph or any other from the list > select the character and it used to appear in the text box next to blinking cursor, BUT NOW it is just showing a box but not the character! Although previously used special characters in the same document are still ok, and if I copy and paste them it works, but I can not add new characters, I wonder why?
    Can you please suggest what must I do to get it back?
    Thanks
    PS. I am still able to insert special characters in other software like Word, text edit, etc, but not in Illustrator!

      I'm not sure about this. What happens when you try Type > Glyphs?

    • @valentinomarshal9496
      @valentinomarshal9496 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GDHT Hi again, the Glyphs work fine, it's only emojis and special characters like; arrows, bullets/stars, currency symbols, math symbols, etc shows a box with a cross mark 🤔

      Is it possibly two different fonts?

    • @valentinomarshal9496
      @valentinomarshal9496 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GDHT Yes maybe, but I have added a few symbols in the same text box earlier and they worked fine, it's just recently that it started acting weird

      Hmm, you might try restarting Illustrator, or resetting preferences.

    Hey Anne, Thank you for putting Time into this Tutorial.
    I've got a Question about the Synchronisation between different Files:
    When i change and save the Symbol in one document it doesn't update those changes in the other documents - is there a way to synchronize that?
    Background Info:
    I am using Symbols as a way to have the same background in different Documents with changing Information on prices and pictures.
    i.e. Graphs & Logos are Instances(Symbols) // Prices & Pictures of Products are referenced from other sources (no ref needed)
    kind regards Eiko

      If you're using different documents, the best way is to use a placed, linked file. So for a background you want to update across the board, create it and save as EPS. Then place that EPS file in each document, making sure it's NOT embedded. Keep the EPS with your other files - if it moves, Illustrator won't be able to find it. Then if you change that file, it will update in all locations. For something like that, though, InDesign is a much better option in my opinion.

    It would have been nice to show symbols within symbols. This can be a really useful tool for things that have multiple parts. For example, a "person" symbol like on the restroom can be comprised of limbs, a head, and a body--all symbols. Then you can set up different poses by dragging the "person" symbol onto your workspace and expanding it. Also, if you go back and add 3D shading to the parts it will update the people even the expanded people because they are made of embedded symbols. This can be super super useful. Now if they would just make symbol text fields dynamic so you could include things like automatic numbering or snap-to connectors it would rock. But Adobe is too busy adding features nobody wants to justify the price of their software as servitude.

    Can you explain how to delete or edit a symbol in my user-defined library? I saved them here, but they are trapped there & I cannot figure out how to removed or edit them once they got saved there. I cannot find this answer anywhere online and though you might know. Thanks

    • @GDHT
      @GDHT  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You'll need to click each symbol, which will send them to your Symbols panel. Then drag them out, make your changes, and drag them back in. Then resave your symbols (Save Symbol Library) - you can overwrite the original if you know where it's stored.

      @@GDHT Thank you. This helps me edit the symbols but I can't just add to the existing user defined group of symbols that I made. I had to make an entire new group with the new symbols. I ended up creating two more groups because of this. Now, I can't figure out how to delete them or any saved group from my User Defined Symbols. I can make them but not delete them. Can you explain how to do this?

    • @GDHT
      @GDHT  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, that's right. The defined symbols can't be changed, but you can make new ones and delete old ones. When you choose Save Symbol Library, notice where Illustrator is wanting to save the new library. It should be something like this: ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe Illustrator26/en_US. Then open a window and navigate to that folder. The symbol libraries should be there, and you can delete the ones you don't need.

      @@GDHT Maybe this is different for PC users, but I am on a Mac. I cannot find this anywhere: ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe Illustrator26/en_US
      Can you?

    • @GDHT
      @GDHT  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      When you go to save a symbol library, you should be able to see a path. That's how I found where mine are stored.
