Gang Starr is GURU (Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal) and DJ Premier - one of the top beat makers in hip-hop history. They come from Boston/Houston respectively but came out from Brooklyn. They were a few different group members of Gang Starr before their classic lineup in 1989. GURU wasn't a gangster rapper, he was a conscious MC. Gang Starr was at the forefront of introducing Jazz-Rap to the culture. GURU even made a few critically acclaimed solo Jazz-Rap albums. You have reacted to some Gang Starr affiliates before with - Group Home and Jeru The Damaja. Their albums include: No More Mr Nice Guy (1989), Step In The Arena (1991), Daily Operation (1992), Hard To Earn (1994), Moment Of Truth (1998) and The Ownerz (2003).
Preach!! - Coming from Boston to Brooklyn! and All time great (RIP) - The beats - Flow and Rhymes - Man!! Vicious!! Conscious when it was cool to be!!! Blessed to have grown up in that period - Where our MC's prided themselves on individualistic!! and Biting was BS!
@@DerekRobinsonTech for sure. I think "Just To Get a Rep" was the first track I ever heard by them (and quickly picked up STEP IN THE ARENA). Found out later they had the album before that with "Manifest" Not an easy one to get your hands on even back then.
@ code of the streets was produced by preemo and guru. I have the hard to earn lp and it lists them both. But guru was primarily the rapper and preemo producer
Gang Starr was the epitome of hip-hop in its purest form. Dope beats by DJ Premier, dope rhymes by Guru. Nothing flashy. Always made music for the streets, never for the radio. Thankfully they gave us countless classics before they broke up and we lost Guru. Premier has gone on to produce several classics and continues to do so. One of the greatest producers ever.
This whole album is dope, Boogie. Code of the streets from this album matches the greatness of this track, and DWYCK. You always being the cool tracks, homie
Please listen to "The Message" (1982) from Grandmaster Flash & the Furious 5. It is one of the first rap songs that got airplay on the radio and became well-known.
DJ Premier, the non rapping half of Gang Starr also produced Jeru da Damaja's and Group Home's first albums(you seemed to enjoy their stuff). These artists were part of the Gang Starr Foundation. A track i have seen requested for a few times on the comments is DWYCK by Gang Starr. Don't even take tose as requests. Think of them more like sound recommendations from people who are pretty sure you'll vibe to it. Hell you might even do a Kwame and get up off your seat
Mass Appeal: those with out real talent chase after fame and fortune. Those with real skill and creativity don’t have to chase they are rewarded. Just like artist today, the majority are talentless the copy and fake there way and people are deceived.
The DJ on this track that you're listening to is DJ Premiere one of the hottest DJs and producer almost every rapper in New York wanted a DJ Premier beat
Scratching is still out there but today’s Rappers are chasing mass appeal and sold out for pop. They abandoned DJs, Breakers and Graffiti.. the other three components of Hip Hop. They are all still out there. Rap today isn’t Hip Hop anymore. At least in my opinion. They may call it that but it is missing the culture.
Boogie lol, I see people are telling you already it is Gang Starr (not pronounced gangster). The DJ is one of the most respected in all of hip hop(DJ Premier) and the MC is GURU(he passed some years ago, also greatly appreciated and respected).
The group is pronounced Gang-STARR, emphasis on the "Starr". Now that you've started with Gang Starr, it's time to listen to "Words I Manifest", "Just to Get a Rep", "Check the Technique", "Code of the Streets", "DWYCK", and "Royalty".
Peaze ImBoogie Zalute Gang Starr...R.I.P. GURU... Zalute DJ PREMIER... All albums are classics... One Of The Best Yet...Hip Hop Royalty 4 Sho´... One...
DJ Premier said he wanted a song to sound like elevator music to counter all the clubby stuff that was coming out at the time. The beat was meant to be a joke, but ended up being a hit.
Peace.. From the UK... RIP Guru..he was the Emcee..DJ Premier.. Is the Producer / DJ...7 Album's.. 1 of which is posthumous.. Life lessons.. First Album released 1989!..last together was 2003..posthumous album 2019..also DJ premier just released a new Gangstarr..track "Finishem"🎉🎉
One thing to notice, at the point when this song dropped, the DJ scratches were much cleaner, the craft was perfected. The beat, bright yet dark and ghostly. This song was like a final warning to future rappers... after this point the music industry was never the same.
It’s pronounced Gang-Star. DJ Premier is a GOD and RIP Guru! You know my Steez is still my all-time favorite track of theirs. They have a million classics?
I'm enjoying your reactions, young man. Check out: Mathematics by Mos Def, and You Know My Steez by Gang Starr. You'll appreciate both. Also, the brotha, who's rapping in Gang Starr, is called "Guru."
Gang starr was huge in 90s coming from a teen back then living in California I had all their albums even the Jazzmataz ones they where so ahead of they're time. Legends never die❤
I love seeing other people’s hiphop journey. I remember how mindblown I was when I first heard Gang Starr, Mobb Deep, Nas, Wu, Tribe…your reactions are hilarious bro😂😂

U will absolutely flip of Gangstarr's song "Just To Get A Rep" and "Take It Personal"!!! And by the way, the producer of the group Gangsstarr (DJ Premier) also produced Jeru the Damaja's "Come Clean" and "Can't Stop The Prophet" and Nas' "NY State Of Mind"...All songs u recently reacted to!
I'm glad you brought up the scratching. I always thought it was timeless in hip hop music, but I wasn't sure how the new generation felt. But all the channels in your generation are definitely feeling it. I think as new rappers come up, especially with the growth of reaction channels it definitely has a chance. Right now we are at a crossroads in hip hop, and I think audiences are open to anything. I've always said "Mass Appeal" is one of my top 5 songs I'd introduce to anybody new to hip hop.
The “Jazzmatazz” series features the GURU with a jazz band backing him. So smooth with deep lyrics and sick beats. I think he did 7 albums like this. Gold all day.
IT'S PRONOUNCED "Gang. STAR." Sir, please. With love and appreciation.
It’s Guru and Dj Premier
It’s pronounce exactly how it’s spelled. How did we get here?

Yep, it's a play on words, a pun.

@ awesome!! I don’t doubt it. Guru is dearly missed. This was a goat group. Both guys are credited on the album though as producers
There were affiliated until a point. Sad it turned sour. I believe Jeru's song - 99.9% is about the breakup.
