Mount gay is the oldest rum distillery in the world. Period. Not just in Barbados. And I believe it’s the second oldest alcohol distillery in the world after bushmills.

That is interesting information to know. Thanks for that. As I have said, rum is not my spirit of choice, but I do like it. Can't afford to be a collector of that as well as whisk(e)y. All the best!

Slantie after a few reviews about Mount gay xo i think i have found my first sipping rum. Tough i really favor whiskey and bourbon

I too really favour whisky and bourbon. However I have a little holding (about 6 bottles) of brandy, and this sole bottle of rum. I can really only afford to concentrate my research on one area, but I thought this xo rum worth having a chat about. Thanks for the feedback.

@@NivlasNightcapNotes well i think i will look into this rum. I have been hearing great things about it. Tonight i am enjoying my first Canadian whiskey crown royal black. Not much on the nose but the smoothness and flavor are nice

Just recently bought two Rums from Barbados. The Plantation 20th anniversary and Doorlys 12 from Foursquare.
I have a fair collection of rum, from British Navy style (Pussers, Woods etc) through to Fijian Rums
This Mount Gay sounds similar to my Barbados rums.
The Doorlys is a stand out to me. Try it if you can.

Thank you for that. I will look out for it but have seen none of the ones you mentioned on bottle shop shelves here in Australia.

I think rum can certainly be of interest for whiskey drinkers, especially runs that are aged for some amount of time. There are some very good sipping rums out there. Mount Gay XO is a good example. Appleton 12 years old is another good one I think.

It is the old story of how far the dollars will stretch. I am happy with all those "aged" rums I have tried, but can't afford to get too many of them.

Nice review, thank you for sharing👍. Used to have this in my liquor cabinet, then got on a beer kick. Think it's time I get a bottle...soon!

The old old story. What booze will my disposable income allow me to buy!!

A bunch of craft beer breweries popped up in my area, live music and all that. I drink maybe once a week, so I guess scotch & rum took a back seat. It's a cold winter where I am, so a good sipping drink hits the spot! Plus yeah I imagine multiple alcohol interests- craft beer, nice wine, wonderful scotch rum tequila... can put quite a drain on the wallet!

Are you experiencing a cold winter right now? Where do you live? In Tasmania where I live we have just started summer, although it has been quite wet and cool so far. Hopefully the warmer stuff will happen.

    Thanks Nivla!
I've tried a couple of rum in my days, but I'm having a bit of hard time with it. I don't know what it is in the taste that I don't like. Most of them I've tasted have a bit of a similar basic profile, even though they're diffrent. It might be arrak or the combination with somthing else.
But one rum I've tasted that works so far is Don Papa. Mabe it's because the taste combinations i don't like aren't as present in that.
I haven't tried Mount Gay though. But I might some day. Unfotunately it's little expensive here in Sweden. Almost $90 USD.
    Thanks again Nivla! 🤗

There are many different flavour profiles with rum. From almost Whisky like Fijian to super delicate Haiti rhum Agricole.Heavy dark rums from Guyana are my favourite although Bajan style rums run them a close second.

Yes, since I did like Don Papa, there's definately rum variations I might like. But all rum tastes rum, more or less, and that specific rum profile is the one I have a hard time liking, if it is too present.
I have a whisky that smell and taste a tad like rum, and that works for me 🤗
      It's an Achentoshan Heartwood..
I've also tasted some version of Plantation, wich was ok to me.

You are obviously a much more knowledgeable person regarding rum. It is hard to be a collector of lots of different things. I have obviously chosen whisky as my main course of research.

You're definately right Nivla! It's extremely hard to be a collector of many diffrent kinds of spirits, wines and beers, just because it's a universe of it's own to cover, not to mention the cost. I've chosen the universe of whisk(e)y too, even though I've found a few wines, a couple of cognac/brandy and rum that I like.
I am a beginner at whisky, and enjoy the journey to explore diffrent kinds of whiskys, and train my nose and palate to detect diffrent notes.
But a goal I have is to find a decent selection of whiskys, and maybe add in a few cognac/brandy and rums in my collection 🤗

Thank you for the positive comment. I am not sure if you are a rum drinker, but whisky is my main area of research. I bought this rum mainly because of the age statement and I do like it. However it has not motivated me to go out and purchase different rum bottles. I do like spirits that have been given plenty of time in barrel!
