    Truly appreciate you all checking the video out. Hope you found it helpful. If you don't mind please like and subscribe...trying to build the channel to reach TH-cam's steep monetization requirements.
    The best way to support the channel is to hit those sweetwater links in the description if you are digging any of the sounds happening.
    Thanks again!

      @NickyV this and your last video on harmonic major are what got me to subscribe. There already a ton of gear chanels, but not that many with clear, useful teaching. I hope you continue down this path.

    • @NickyV
      @NickyV  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@dontuttleThanks man! I think it’s easier to monetize the channel doing gear demos with links but my heart is in teaching…so I’ll probably stick more to that.
      Appreciate the feedback!

    These are just fantastic lessons, Nicky. Very usable information in an engaging format. You assume a certain level of knowledge, which I also appreciate. I’m not a great player, by any stretch, but I know enough to seek out the kinds of sounds your talking about, like Lydian and altered. If you had a Patreon I would definitely join but I understand that there are advantages to focusing on one platform while you’re growing your base. Now I have to go check out your harmonic major lesson!

    I did some studio work in the 80s-90s but most of my experience has been nightly bar gigs (30+ years). I had a brain tumor pretty much wiping the rich and famous guitar dream out LOL. So I sit here watching videos on TH-cam all day long of guitarists and videos like this. Despite being 60+ and totally disabled (unable to even leave the house) I still have this fantasy of getting back to it someday. In the meantime I keep learning and dreaming.
    I was also a college instructor (music and computer tech) both public and private schools. Of all the channels I have seen and some are excellent yours is quickly becoming my favorite, The nuts and bolts usefulness, clarity, and delivery is amazing you are a natural born teacher. I am sure this channel is going to be very successful. I just wanted to comment here to inspire you to keep this up and stay on topics like this.
    GREAT JOB!

    Very cool lesson, thank you. Although this lesson is MUCH simpler than it appears since all examples (except the altered chord) simply point to the exact same scale (specifically the 3 chord's pentatonic). If in C major then...
    1. To the 1 chord (C), play Em pentatonic
    2). To the 6 chord (Am) play Em pentatonic
    3). To the 4 chord (F/Lydian) play Em pentatonic
    4). To the 2 chord (Dm/Dorian) play Em pentatonic
    But that's a great point...Em pentatonic gives you EGABD, so by getting the B in there that gives you the tonic's major 7, the Dorian's major 6 and Lydian's #4.

    Great video! I subscribed to your channel. I have a question, do the substitutions work over the chord or the key? So, if you are playing over a C major chord and you play an Em pentatonic to get the major substitution, does that work only over the C major chord, or all of the chords in the chord progression as long as they stay in the key of C major? Or, do you change the minor pentatonic scale root note to always stay a major 3rd above whatever major chord is being played?

    • @NickyV
      @NickyV  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It’s a bit tricky. The substitution technically works over every diatonic chord in the key. All the notes in Emin pentatonic belong to the key of C so it will work (just like how Cmaj/Amin pentatonic works over every chord depending on how you finesse it) but you will get a few cases where it’s really dissonant. It will work well over the 1maj chord, 3min chord, 5maj chord, and 6min chord. The others (2min, 4maj, 7dim) might be a little out there. For those three chords there’s another substitution you can use that I didn’t mention in the video which would be playing a Minor Pentatonic up a whole step from the tonic major. (Dmin pentatonic in the key of Cmaj).
      Moving up a major third from every chord in a particular key doesn’t work diatonically.
      Hope the long winded reply makes sense haha.
      Really appreciate you watching and subscribing.
      If what I said doesn’t make sense or click, let me know and I’ll give it another shot!

    Guitar player for 50 years. Still a hack. Major, minor pentatonic, Dorian, and Mixolydian, all at various positions. Not that good really. I try my hand at some jazzy-sounding chord/melody stuff (I play a mean Misty!) to make up for my lack of lead/solo play. Your videos are pretty good and are relatively simple ways to "color-fade" or whatever term you use. Thanks Nicky V. I subscribed. I am subscriber 17,701. 😎
