Ahh, the good ole curtain burner. I remember my grandmother having one of those sets.

I see this is quite an old upload. I have only just found it. It is very well thought out and presented. A lot of effort has gone into it . The advice is excellent and the warnings well explained. Although I have restored quite a few radios I still learned from it. As you say , we never stop learning . Thanks for taking the time to make this superb video . Regards from the UK .

I'm looking to restore an old radio. I have not picked one out yet, but it has always been a goal of mine to do this. I just started watching your series on repairing the T62 and I've found these videos to be super helpful in understanding the steps I'm going to need to follow. Just wanted to give you a big thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge!

@@rciancia yes, more dangerous than the medical equipment I work on. Also a note came with the radio I got saying "limited to 10 minutes, gets hot" oh boy.

You have learned a lot grasshopper. Good job. Interesting about the curtain burner. Never saw anyone restore one of those on TH-cam.

Really enjoying these vids and learning a lot. I was going to scrap my old transformers - not now. Also I have an antique tube/valve tester which I will restore to working order again now...

I didn't monitor the storm by the HF hams. So missed a lot of the action. I get on YT and FB too much these days.

At 1:15 you say "let's recap". Don't know if you caught it, but recapping is likely going to be exactly what you'll be doing. Great pun.

Hi Ron, In this video you show that the maximum filter capacitor for a 5Y3 is 10uf. About 3 years ago I recapped a Sears Silvertone model 6092.
I went back and checked the schematic which called for 2-30uf capacitors and that is what I used when recapping. The radio was only played a few hours since recapping so I tested the 5y3. The needle on the tube tester went off scale (too good). The tube tester did not show any shorts.
My 1970 RCA tube manual states the following:
AC plate-to-plate supply voltage 700 use 20 uf
    AC plate-to-plate supply voltage 1000 use 10uf
The plate-to-plate voltage is 630 in this radio.
Should I use 2-22uf caps or a 10uf off the heater and a 22uf after the choke?
    Thank you for suggestions.

      Gene
Check the Tube manual and look for Filter input Capacitor for a 5Y3... its 10uf.. frank.pocnet.net/sheets/049/5/5Y3G.pdf. Anything higher will shorten the life of the tube basically

Why is one side of the line cord soldered to the rectifier tube? It didn't show that on your schematic. Did they use an unused pic as a point to connect the line cord to the transformer?

Hi Ron, did you write a script to read from? If so, it was very well written.
If not, great impromptu. You made it very clear to understand.
You've come a long way, kinda like guitar lessons, sometimes the student ends up teaching the teacher.

I see this is a 3 year old video but I am interested to know how to replace the metal can that has capacitors in it. Do you just take it out and get a new one or can you just take it out and add new caps?

    • @rciancia
      @rciancia  ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Frank. I usually cut the cans open with a dremel tool, remove the insides and put new caps inside and reinstall it.. Its pretty simple

@@rciancia OK...I want to try it. I have a nice Zenith clock radio I recapped but I was afraid to open the can without seeing a video. If I can cut it open and then just put it back over the caps I know what to do now...thanks!

I don’t know what a filament string is and it’s hard to tell what’s actually being measured in there, making it harder to figure out. Maybe some drawn diagrams would help. Still seems better explained than most, even though I apparently lack the basic knowledge to know what’s happening. Subscribed.
