Firing your clients, buying back your time, narrowing your product offerings, and business coaching are a brilliant way to "restart" your company in a way that allows it to grow without limit. I love the idea that you are going to offer specialized video business coaching. Hello!I just watched your video on tripod usage and its importance in filmmaking, and I must say, it's incredibly informative! Your detailed breakdown of how different tripod features impact stability and shot quality is invaluable. The practical tips you shared will undoubtedly help both novice and experienced filmmakers enhance their work. Thanks for sharing your expertise!

If I can ask @ChriaFranklinJr you stated around 2:30 that you hired a 'right hand'. 1. Where did you look to hire a right hand? 2. How did you go about posting your request for a right hand? 3. What do you recommend paying a right hand a month? Is it a percentage of each project?

To clarify, just because it’s facts doesn’t mean it’s not bragging. 😅 also, I wish people would show their net income more frequently, rather than just gross which can be pretty misleading. I only did roughly $200k last year (pre tax), but my expenses were low so my net profit was around $170k (pre tax). I have done higher income in previous years with less net profit (due to paying for larger crews, gear and such). Anyways man, congrats on your gross profit, that’s pretty wicked! And firing old clients is low key the most essential thing we can do when trying to take our video business to the next level. That alone moved me into the 6-figure range a few years back. It’s uncomfortable, but the results are undeniable.
Because of this comment I just sat and filmed a 9 minute video deep diving into what a retainer model process would look like for someone who wanting to build relationships with new clients. I recommend you start small and focus on relationships with people and how you can add value to their business through video. Maybe you give them a sample of what their business paired with video could look like. We have to put the people first and the business will come. Video coming soon.
Happy to help! I was paying around $3600 a month to have someone with me for every shoot and handle about 70% of the editing! The main thing that my business coach taught me was to focus on getting the project done with 30% of the budget! So I normally dedicate about that much per project to outsource.
@@ChrisFranklinJr so in this case if you were to charge around 10k a month as your gross profit your net profit would be around $5400 per month after overhead expenses?
@@charliegamezmedia Exactly! BUT, because I pay my editor on retainer as well, I'm able to throw more than just this single retainer client at them and they help me edit them all. So some months I am able to bring it $25k while still keeping my editing expenses relatively low. That's offset because sometimes they don't have a ton of work to do. I will be making a deep dive into this topic soon actually!
Hey Chris. I am looking at your retainer budget, a few questions. What is Project Milestone Cadence? Also, are you being paid $10K/mo. regardless of whether or not the client does the 5 videos, do they decide what the three internals are or are you helping them? Seems to me that, for the retainer to work for you you will need them to be in it for a few months at least which means coming up with multiple internal videos. BTW, I loved your video with Chris Do a few years ago and the recent one when you are down $150k/yr. That's my current situation also.
Excellent question! With my most recent client, we had a TON of discovery meetings before hand. I actually met with them over the course of 4 months. We discussed how video may fit into their company and we workshopped the deliverables together. We check in every month to make sure we're hitting the mark. This client is more relationship based so I have the extra time to dedicate to them and take that risk.
It was about $150k but that was VERY Skewed because I chose to take about $70k and buy some very specific things for the business. (not entirely necessary purchases to function, but things I wanted to make life easier.)

TALK THAT TALK! A mistake that has cost me THOUSANDS.
I've asked that question...cost me a ton of money as well. Asking them their budget is the kiss of death.
