Marc Almond's contribution to music is immense. He partly grew up in Southport, my hometown, the same place Morrissey wrote about in Every Day Is Like Sunday when he sang ' this is the coastal town that they forgot to close down'. I digress. He went to the then local grammar school- it is well documented that he was glad to escape the small town, small minded claustrophobia of the place. Not to mention the rampant homophobia in the seventies ( and eighties). A few years ago he released an album called The Velvet Trail named after a local path in Ainsdale near the beach that he remembered from growing up. He still visits his mum who lives in the town, as I understand it. From Soft Cell to a string of solo albums and singles for over forty years, he has always ploughed his own furrow as an artist and persevered through fickle fashion and the tides of time. Surely he deserves national treasure status!
@@electroniccafemusic Thanks. Not read his book so I must have picked it up from somewhere else. Glad I remembered accurately though still appalled he had to suffer so much in common with others. I have not heard any claims to enlightenment made for the seventies but the eighties were nowhere near as progressive as many thought at the time on a host of social issues and still look back on with rose tinted glasses to an extent. I have a suspicion that the reverence for the music of the eighties ( which I endorse!) gives the decade a free pass when it comes to its darker side being overlooked ( racism/ homophobia/ unemployment/ Cold War)Those at the sharp end of hard fought battles for equality and acceptance would beg to differ, I am sure! I am surprised there have not been more books looking at social issues/ change in the seventies/ eighties through the prism of music. Walls Come Tumbling Down by Daniel Rachel did a good job of this a few years ago, charting the period 1976 to 1992 from Rock Against Racism to Red Wedge and more.
This is THE most inspirational album of my entire life. It had, and still has, a massive impact om my life, as a musician and as a person. Thank you Marc and Dave for making this life changing piece of art❤❤❤. Thank you Guys in Electronic Café for reminding me and the rest of the world of "This last Light..." 🙏🙏🙏🙂

This Last Night In Sodom is my favourite Soft Cell Album. It still sounds amazing and the songs are great. Luckily they now get the recognition they deserve❤🔥❤
I'll indeed have to dust it down.... let's not forget they never sold out. The snippets you played of the album remind me of a great duo , and great times of not needing a top 40 single to know some exciting and essential listening material. Fabulous guys. Cheers. 😍
Nice to know old 80 stars still on road! I do not see on your video another great 80 legend who still do records and play live Alphaville with great first and second album full remastered from orginal tap record.

TLNIS is a fantastic album (that I didn’t appreciate when I first heard it). It is dark (Disintegration by the Cure levels of dark) but perfectly represents where Soft Cell were at that time. A fitting epitaph to a ‘pop’ band that were never really pop. My favourite track is Meet Murder My Angel. Fantastic production on that track and contains the killer lyric ‘Treacled in apathy All worries swept away By one so simple act of annihilation And I've not cried like this And I've not felt this calm.’
Love this album, remember buying it on cassette when it was released and the singles on 12", an underrated and very anarchic album Soul Inside rates as one of my favourite Soft Cell Singles
I’m surprised I never explored this album when it was first released. After listening to it today, I found it to be quite dark but filled with excellent tracks. It leans more towards alternative than synth-pop and has aged exceptionally well. It serves as a transitional piece to his solo work, which I adore, as some of the tracks feel like early versions of his more eclectic, non-synth-pop explorations.
For me out of their albums from the 80's TLNIS was my least favorite full length album by Soft Cell with my top fav being Non Stop Erotic Cabaret & second being "The Art Of Falling Apart" Though there are a few tracks on "TLNIS" that I did like such as "Meet Murder MY Angel" Little Rough Rhinestone" "Surrender To A Stranger" & "The Best Way To Kill" the rest of the tracks on the album I thought were awful including "Down In The Subway" & "Soul Inside"
Another great album 40 years old - tell us what you think 🎵

I still think this is the most daring album ever released by a recognised pop act. Truly brilliant. Thanks for highlighting it 🖤

Fantastic, this also passed me by at the time, one of the best bands of the 80’s, always did love those ‘dark themes’ 😈🖤

Yes we said it was the darkest yet but true, it contained some good songs. Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
