CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Having dropped off the last FedEx package, Chuck (Tom Hanks) is at a crossroads and doesn't know which direction to head.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
An exploration of human survival and the ability of fate to alter even the tidiest of lives with one major event, Cast Away tells the story of Chuck Noland (Tom Hanks), a Federal Express engineer who devotes most of his life to his troubleshooting job. His girlfriend Kelly (Helen Hunt) is often neglected by his dedication to work, and his compulsive personality suggests a conflicted man. But on Christmas Eve, Chuck proposes marriage to Kelly right before embarking on a large assignment. On the assignment, a plane crash strands Chuck on a remote island, and his fast-paced life is slowed to a crawl, as he is miles removed from any human contact. Finding solace only in a volleyball that he befriends, Chuck must now learn to endure the emotional and physical stress of his new life, unsure of when he may return to the civilization he knew before. Cast Away reunites star Hanks with director Robert Zemeckis, their first film together since 1994's Oscar-winning Forrest Gump.

This scene is so powerful. We never really see the crossroads we take in life but here is he is consciously aware of what ever path he takes next will change his life from that moment forth. One of the best endings ever.
Never really thought of that…I was thinking more of Robert Johnson
TOM HANKS SUPER ⭐. FOR ME YOU ARE THE BEST ACTOR IN HISTORY! YOU CONVERT YOURSELF INTO YOUR CHARACTER!
Agreed❤❤
He totally went after that poon
he becomes a serial killer at the end due to his trauma
"You look lost"
He must have thought 'lady, you have no idea how lost I once was'.
And I still am
Lt. Dan's place is a very difficult place to find
She was his guardian angel. She did one final check up on him and basically said “My job here is done, what you do next is up to you”
Well hopefully he got to bang the guardian angel later on too, the guys been holding on for over 4 years ffs
Typical Man answer😂. It's not all about "bang" a chick. What his heart desired, was love. A connection . He knew what direction to go after seeing the wings on her truck . Same wings on the FedEx package he never opened on the island, but returned later. It was HER package .That's what alot of people missed in this ending. That's the direction he took ...
@@alonzoweaver7948Nah he just wants to bang
@@alonzoweaver7948banging her, right, that's what we're saying
I do like your take on this. I always believed that the wings were a way towards determination, a cosmic way of saying, “ Don’t give up. Make a purpose and move forward.” I thought the wings on the truck was a way to say that his life can begin anew with a new companion. But, your take does make a lot of sense and is just as beautiful.
Redhead: "Good luck Cowboy."
Chuck: "Just call me Woody;)"
This deserves 1.5k likes.
He later died from a snakebite on his foot.
lol
Underrated Comment.
I’m beginning to wonder if the female cowboy from the second toy story movie was actually voiced by Lari.
Ha ha jk.
Perfect movie with a perfect ending
For some reason, the lyrics from "Roll Me Away" work for me.
Doubt is just the space between two certainties. Breath, choose, then move and you will find a way.
@Rick O'Shay yes but now he has a choice
DAMN RIGHT
My grandpa didn't like this ending.
One of the best movies I've ever seen. The fact he grew to befriend a volleyball was amazing and that he survived 4 years on an island and didn't lose his mind, plus the ending is fantastic.

Her real life husband was actually called Chuck, just like Tom Hans was Chuck in this movie.
Ah really, that's sad. Loved the thought of them being happy,,,in the movie.
When people ask me what's my favorite Tom Hanks movie, it's this one hands down. Best performance of his career.
That's actually cap, Saving Private Ryan had the most accurate representation of WW2 in film history
@@RSG_TheMonster Different film and not a better performance than this.
He should of got that 3rd oscar for this
As I wrote, I believe that not opening the package represented clinging to a last shred of hope. Saving the package to deliver later represented his last thread of a connection with the outside world. It was a reminder that he was still part of that world where he had responsibilities and a women he loved.
When I walked across America through the plains, I would stop at crossroads like this and realize just how big and wonderful the world and life is.
My walk was solitary, and through the plains like this very few people were around, so when you arrive to a city, or even a small town, it makes you realize once again how precious life is. This movie really kept me motivated throughout.
Beautiful take on this scene.
You wrote this over a decade ago, you must be a completely different person now but I think most people have this same take
This movie is one of my all time favourites and for me was borderline perfect. The plane crash and even surviving it (in the middle of the pacific) is genuinely terrifying. The island itself presents a contrast in feelings: on the one hand harsh and desolate, on the other beautiful, wondrous and paradise for many a city dweller. Then we have the solitude of Hank's character both comedic and thoughtful. His tragic friendship with Wilson, lost love with Kelly and finally ending at the crossroads of his life. Great movie!
dadada486 i was lost on fraser island for a day , nuthing to it
RIP Lari White. You are an angel.
Rest in peace to Lari White, the beautiful lady in this scene. She passed away from cancer a few years. Gone much too soon.
Saw this movie about 13-14 years ago on DVD for the first time. I'm not sure if I'll ever remember the time and place but, I'll always remember how I slept to this when my life was at its most lost, leaving me wandering, wondering. So much of everything has passed, since.
For the record, I think it was VHS. OOPS! Oh well! LOL
Life is about Jesus Christ. my friend
Everything will pass away , no matter if your life is good or bad . We will all die 1 day but we can live again after death thanks to Jesus Christ's sacrifice on the cross for us !
accept Jesus as your Saviour and confess your sins to Him and you will live eternally
Its funny that you sat that because I thought I was the only person that can relate to this movie in some way
I hope you are happy
@@aleksk4151 nothing is about Jesus Christ, you can believe in what you want but in the end you make the decisions, not some thing in the sky
Love the symbolism.
I thought it was a bit clumsy and obvious but I can see why it works.
@@leew1598 Sometimes it has to be obvious symbolism in order for it to be really poignant. Most important part of the film.
I was waiting for Cary Grant to turn up with a Cropduster Biplane strafing the scene

Almost 20 years after it came out man.......a masterpeice
I just love how he stands at a crossroad in his life, and decides to go after her in the end, after the angel with the golden wings that kept his hope up while on the island :)
I love how it´s hinted that she waves her hands a lot so that Chuck can catch the fact that she has no wedding ring. Not on purpose, but you can tell he notices it.
Possibly the best ending tona film! The parsel he kept and didn't open linked him up to the girl at the end! Awesome
This is my favorite Movie and I have seen many. Went to the theatre twice when it was New and must have seen it 20 times from my download. It strikes a chord in me. A true grit story that has it all in a clever way. Optimism and hope. A real inspirational Movie. Puts a lot of Things in perspective. Every single scene is well thought out and the camerawork is great. Hanks best performance ever. Love Wilson.
the tide brought in his guardian angel
I still love the answer that Robert gave a bunch of college kids when asked what was in the box with the angel wings. He told them it was a satellite radio.
A truly wonderful scene and a fantastic ending!
She was only onscreen for maybe 60 seconds, but Lari White made a huge impression with her charm. RIP.
She was Lari White, in real life a country singer, died age 52 from cancer, so sad
this movie and this scene brings me all kinds of feelings, can't quite describe. longing, nostalgia, picturesque, serenity, feeling at home.
Out of 4 paths, he chose the unpaved one.
The rough road of love.
It's a great iconic scene. Sadly, if you visit the site today, it's been spoiled with windmills all over the place. Even more sadly, Lari White, who played Bettina Peterson in the scene, passed away three days ago on January 23, 2018. RIP.
Just looked it up on Google Maps, those hideous windmills are such an eyesore. Thanks, libtards.
Thanks for this uplifting update.
Who knows what the tide could bring?....
Mostafa Elzeiny a great big turd

This scene currently sums up my life as I currently sit here at the end of my first year of uni, deciding if I should stay or if I should go.. but each path is good

When James Lipton (Inside the Actors Studio) asked Tom "where do you think he went?" and Tom replied, "oh, he turned around, and made babies with that lady".
I think he went to her to start a new chapter
All the FedEx drivers I have asked have said they have seen the movie.
It is part of basic training. All new hires are made to watch this movie in case they are ever in a situation like this. lol

And her husband's given name is Chuck.
Leaving the letter letting her know the package saved his life and meeting her on the road having short conversation and sees the angel wings on the truck and realize who she was and stare down the road that right there was enough for him, nothing more nothing less.
This makes me think of our free will to make life altering choices, the same way Jack (Tom Hanks) had the free will/choice to stay on the island and die there, or to try to hang himself from that tree on top of that mountain but yet he chose to keep living and breathing. Now, he is at crossroads to choose where his life will take him and ultimately where he will end up. The same way we have that free will in life, very powerful scene, probably one of the best in Cinema.
that package had got a satellital phone....
TONGO - now thats funny
TONGO that would have been one hell of an ending XD
Hahaha
Robert Zemeckis once made zany comedies like Back to the Future and Used Cars, but now he makes serious realistic films like Forrest Gump and Cast Away. That's great.
*Laughs in Polar Express
I would think after working for Federal Express and being Shipwrecked like that for them that man has an early retirement. In all actuality he can go anywhere
Yeah, likely settled out of court for like $50k for each day spent on the island. Set like a jet for life.
Such a beautiful ending, cried like a baby
Humans are nothing without each other nothing too prove, nothing to love and nothing to do together
I agree. Sometimes when I'm watching this I'm just waiting for the ending. Tom's face and that music, forget about it. Sad and exhilaratingly hopeful at the same time.
A package was picked up from this same lady, who was welding at the beginning of the movie...she makes those angel wings figures and possibly other things. What's in it? It isn't about the physical contents. It is about Hope...he didn't open the package because he saw the angel wings and it reminded him of Hope and something to look forward to. He made it his goal to keep that one package safe in the hope that one day he would deliver it.
When she calls her a cowboy, I thought to myself "There's a snake in my boot!"
Quite beautiful. Simply filmed and stunning!
This is such an eerie moment in the movie. Who hasn't been there before, alone in the middle of nowhere (literally in this case) and no direction to go.
hes always gonna be one of my favorite actors & my favorite character hes ever played will always be woody :)
Interesting how he breaks the fourth wall in that final gaze right into the camera as if to say to the audience, "Well, this is *your* situation too. Which way will *you* go?"
Just watched this movie. Ah just wow. What a beautiful symbolic ending! :)
Iam just crying over this this movie awakens a weird feeling in me that I cant explain just I love this movie so goddamn much

Simply incredible ending..
The main point is he was alone, focusing him on self survival. Surviving isn't the main problem it's having a purpose, something other than himself to live for. That's the package. If he opens the package then he can't deliver it whole. The package needs to be kept intact, pure, this is his word his bond his reason giving him the strength to go on. Whilst alone he had a direction an inner force, deliver the package. It's delivered, he has kept his promise to himself, now what/where to do/go
This Is A Good Ending
The million dollar smile on chuck face...
This man possesses multiple expressions at same time.. talented asf.

This is such a simple take but quite stunning to watch. Up there with the best endings of all time !
"Good luck cowboy"
Now that's a nice reference there. Did he have a snake i his boots?
No, it's coz her ex-husband was the cowboy in Russia who answered the door in his dressing gown.
RIP Lari White, who played Bettina (1965-2018).
In 1 week I have to give again (4 times so far) two lessons in my university. Every time I think I'll pass them, at the end I always miss something. I should had passed them 2 years ago... please, pray for me this time, to pass them and end with it. I'm tired... I have really done a good preparation this time. If I fail again... I don't know. I'll probably feel lost like Tom Hanks. 😥
What a wonderful and remarkable ending to this masterpiece of a movie
I watched this movie again recently on good ol' vhs....Some of us look after our tapes, unlike those who use them to make rafts!!!! Seriously though, what a excellent movie. I had a tear in my eye when he left Helen Hunt on that rainy night.
I like to think that he went back to the lady's house to talk about her role in his adventure, and maybe it'll turn into something more.
I was 20 years old when I seen this in theatres i really liked the meaning of the film very powerful . Each road has its own story which ever you take will lead you into all the trials and tribulation, but at the end of it all everything will be OK
well it's obvious what happens , chuck go's back and falls in love with her. If he would opened that box on the island he would of never met her . destiny
Triple Mexican 619 This is the most plausible explanation of the ending. Good man
Bought a Jeep because of this movie. I love this movie.
That little smile like 'I'm ready to start again from the beginning 😥
...i think ive seen this ending to many a time. cant stop crying. only now id just notice that in this final scene its a woman who gives him directions where to go. at the opening of the film he's the one giving directions to his coworkers. the angel wings guide him and protect him in his time of need, a second time again. also in the movie he talks about "breathing" which 10 years before (1992) he talked about in sleeples in seattle, again saying how he had lost the one he loved. very special.
Chuck is now looking north, though not all the way to Canada, but to Bettina's home...
Don’t tell me you didn’t cry when Wilson got lost and this scene, this movie was perfect, I love this movie and always will
My wife and I went there (to the crossroads) this summer. We were visiting her mother in Amarillo, Texas.....and we just HAD to go see this place. It's located about 70 miles northeast of Amarillo.....and It hasn't changed a bit. We took LOTS of video and pics.
The true definition of that crossroad is the choices we make in our lives weather it will give us hope, sadness, suffering, happiness and peace it's our choices will makes us on the right path..
Those golden wings on the truck saved his life!
she's GORGEOUS
This movie was great loved it
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could...
just seems like a perfect poem for this scene
Watched film 2 years ago memories
Tom Hanks is my favorite actor and I admire all of his films. Cast Away is my personal favorite though. It grips and moves me like no other film can, I actually prefer it to Forrest Gump! Incredible ending scene! Highly underrated film!
Tom Hanks is also my favorite actor, and Cast Away is my favorite movie of his. I was very disappointed when Hanks didn't win an Oscar for Cast Away. I never really liked Forrest Gump, though, because almost everything in the movie just seemed to freaking unlikely. Hanks was also good in Bridge of Spies-just about everything he was in, really.
Well said.
good movie, tragedy, despair, loneliness, lost love, triumph, ....4 stars****
Probably the best to end this movie. Fantastic.
It might be but, I don't thing that was true. Opening the package would have represented giving up and losing all hope. He was certainly familiar with Wings which were a running theme throughout the movie. Especially interesting was when he gave an extended look at the wings on the back of the truck in the final scene and then faintly smiled. It is this part where I get confused. Wings, or the appearance of wings, might have represented taking him to a new chapter in his life. Not sure.
He had come to a crossroads in his life. Unsure what the future may hold. A resume of castaway not withstanding.
The massive flat land draws a stark contrast to the tiny island in the Pacific. Very well thought out.
*Great* scene
