I don’t think I have felt more bad for a protagonist than in the scenes between Ichiban and Saeko. No it’s not because “he’s totally me, guys!” Or anything like that. When you actually take Ichiban’s past into account, these scenes become ten times sadder. Remember, Ichiban has no experience with women, not only because he was a former yakuza who spent almost two decades in jail and did not really have the time for that sort of thing, but also, but also because he was a borderline social outcast growing up. What grade school or teenage girl in their right mind would date a kid who was born at a bath n’ brothel and was raised by the women who worked there? That’s another reason why Ichiban has not aged very much mentally. His only friend growing up was that Dragon Quest game he grew up playing. (The future I dreamed of music video pretty much spells this out.) Even in the yakuza, Ichiban spent a majority of his time taking care of and pampering the young master, much to Masato’s annoyance. He might have developed some patience and social skills in the yakuza, but I don’t think that is going to help him much on a date. (Side note: Cool detail I noticed on a repeat play through of Like A Dragon. When Sawashiro threatens to cut off Ichiban’s finger, he isn’t mad about the money, he is mad that Ichiban is lying about what he and the young master were up to. He knows that Ichi is lying for him. He knew that hostess spelled trouble from the start.) At least Kazama waited until Kiryu finished high school before letting him in the yakuza. Ensuring that Kiryu, by comparison, has a lot more life experience. Also Kiryu wasn’t a total social pariah. Ichiban dropped out of middle school, but I don’t think he would even be able to finish school even if he wanted to. Jiro Kasuga was Ichiban’s adoptive father and former owner of Shangri-La. Once he died, a new owner would have likely taken over, and Ichi doesn’t really have a lease to live there. So not only does Ichiban have no one to financially support his schooling, he also has no home. Which explains why he seemed pretty chill about being homeless as an adult. It wasn’t exactly the first time he was in that situation.
It does bug me that through the hell and high water they went through in the last game game, that she up and ghosts him for an entire year, and likely would have gone on longer had the events not had happened as they did. Like I get Ichiban fumbled the bag badly with proposing on a first date and not seeing where he went wrong, but give the dude a break, he's spent half his life in jail with no dating experience even before then, and his only advice was a one day lecture from a pair of unsuccessful bachelors and she didn't bother to tell him where he went wrong.
Yeah, as much as I like Ichiban x Saeko........I hated that. However, I don't hold it too much against the character, but blame the poor writing. Y8's story was"all over the place" some times, garbage sometimes, and rehashed at other times. In the grand scheme, the writing and story decisions definitely suggested that RGG couldn't figure out what they wanted that game to be. For example, Ichiban essentially searched for his mother the entire game and at the very end just had a 2 minute conversation on the beach with her........and that was it. I don't even remember her being referenced in the ending scenes. Shoot, even garbage characters like Eric got more of a satisfactory conclusion for his issue then Ichiban did. And the young girl that Bryce was still after? She remained at the island at the mercy of Bryce's brainwashed goons. There was no surety that she was safe. Then the Bryce last fight felt unresolved. Ebina felt like a rehash of other characters. What's more...Ichiban should have fought Ebina and Kiryu should have fought Bryce...because Kiryu was pissed at bryce for taking advantage of kids(and Kiryu took care of kids at the orphanage). Ichiban vs Ebina would be a fight between half-brothers with different views on the Yakuza. Did anybody really care about the guy(Eiji) at the end that Ichiban carried to the police station? RGG tried to make it an emotional moment, but I thought it was again a rehash, and a poor one, from Y7.
when he started proposing and saying all that stuff I was like hellll naw. I got to choose the clothes and what place to go and ichibans screwing this all up. I literally was like what button do I press to make ichi shut up?
I played all of the Yakuza games and I'm kind of tired of the failed (canon) romances we've getting. Like, in Kiryuu case, either his love interest moves away forever or dies. It doesn't even have to be a focal point of the story; it could just be a background thing that's only relevant to your relationship status or random comments. I'm glad I read the comments though, I was expecting they would get married at the end of the game.
Yeah I mean, with Yumi I understand, it kinda fits the story, but is not necessary with Kaoko, give Kiryu a break. Even Judgement had better options. But still with Ichiban and Saeko it was okay
Yakuza is the last franchise I'd expect a love story to be good, sadly. Even the only romance that went well which was Haruka and Yuta, was because Kiryu stepped in because Yuta didn't give a shit at first.
I actually really enjoyed the whole plot line here. Yes the end is a bit goofy. But both characters are dorks so it's fine. I mean look how happy Saeko initially is when he says he got her a gift 😂 . My only gripe really is the 1 year ghosting thing. Because even with the drink links and a perspective on how Saeko felt. It feels a bit contradictory with what she explains to Ichiban? She makes it seem as if she's not angry and that she just doesn't want to be in a relationship. However we see she actually was pretty aggravated by being proposed to. The suspense of her true feelings made you think about what she thought in between a large chunk of the game. Also i wish we got more insight from her when she first learns about what's going on. Maybe be more inquisitive about the whole situation. But I get the time crunch and all. Overall I still was really happy with it. For the love of God just don't pull some bs and make them break up in 9 tho
The ghosting for a year thing feels a bit much, and honestly I'm not sure why they did it because it doesn't really add anything to make it last that long to begin with and makes her look bad. Could have easily been shorter since they already mention at the start when they meet at Survive they hadn't all met up for a drink for 6 months.
I think Ichiban's friend group and Ichiban himself are definitely the safest bunch around if you think about it, that is if you compare them to all the other mainline characters ☠️
Yeah, I didn't like the ghosting either. The way I see it, where both sides lacked in was communication. Ichiban should've communicated to Saeko on her thoughts of marriage, and Saeko should've communicated to Ichiban how she felt bout his whole proposal and the things he said like an adult as she so proudly likes to mention all the time instead of just walking way and ignoring Ichi like a child
I take the ghosting as her initially waiting for Ichiban to figure it out himself, but then herself feeling awkward at the distance she created between the two. It starts with a month and then becomes two. When you don't talk to anyone for a while it becomes difficult to start again. She does also admit she was legitimately angry at Ichiban's proposal to Kiryu.
I swore they were going to get married in the end, that was so disappointing, but at least it confirmed that saeko is ichiban's love interest, but damn, not even a kiss? WE WANT AN ICHIBAN AND SAEKO DLC!!!!!
I don't care what anyone says, this is still 100x better than what we got for Kiryu's love story. Kaoru's in town? And she's been saving herself for Kiryu for 15 years? And she's still waiting to marry him? Oh and that's it. Not even gonna meet on screen? Thanks for nothing.

There are some games I just prefer Japanese voices for. RGG games are so Japan-centric, it feels wrong to have the voices in English. Didn't like ichiban had the whole. Ichiban holdings company going on and he made millions? I remember getting like 2M yen by just playing that mini game. Is it not canon he got rich in the end? Id assume he'd be more well off in the end.
lmao ¥2m is like £10k or $14k. Great savings, and more than enough to cover a windfall or months of hardship, but it's hardly "rich".
I mean, it would be weird if they make their new MC a married man after the second game
Not really. The whole "will they, won't they" over several iterations has really been 99% of media for decades. A little difference wouldn't hurt.
@@willbrown6298 Yea kinda tired of seeing the will they won't they that span like years and i mean YEARS. Its like Spider-Man and Mary Jane atm like bruh just let em be Married "bUt NoOoOoO hE NeEDs tO BE mOrE fOcUsEd oN other Stuff 😑
You literally just described Uncharted
Does that mean another sequel? Yay, but it actually wouldn't hurt to see them married in their next game
Ichiban you disapoint me

Why the hell everyone play this game with japanese voices? The english dub is VERY GOOD, give it a shot, you will not regret it!
Herd mentality I guess, but I agree the English dub is very good, even Kiryu's English dub surprised me, seeing all the hate Yong yea got, he wasn't bad at all
and why the hell you’re playing a japanese game with eng dub. That’s make 0 sense to me.
@@mishima433 Wow, so you're telling me I should play Resident Evil, Sonic, Metal Gear, Mega Man and all Japanese games in Japanese just because they're from Japan?😂😂😂
I’m too used to the characters having their Japanese voices after playing all the games. I’ll definitely try it out later though since a lot of the engrish in Hawaii got jarring
There are some games I just prefer Japanese voices for. RGG games are so Japan-centric, it feels wrong to have the voices in English. And no matter how good e.g. Kaiji Tang or Matt Mercer are, they can't replace Ichi or Majima's JP VAs, to say nothing of Kiryu.
Plus the JP karaoke is 100x better lol.
Persona is another series I would probably play in Japanese but I got kinda used to the English dub there.
Lame. Nothing like being locked into a romantic choice 😮💨. She's not even best waifu material. I want options!
Chitose is the better choice imo.
There is always Miss Match
Chitose💵 or Eri 💴 > Saeko .
I hate Saeko...I prefer Chitose!
Because she rejected Kasuga?
Saeko became my best girl of the franchise since Y7. Give her time, you can't blame her that Ichiban is an idiot.
Saeko's good, wdym? Is it because she rejected Ichiban's proposal at the beginning of the game? Dude, who tf marries someone after the first date?
@@GodzillaGamerFan-uu1uc Problem is she ghosted him for over a year.
@@JayceCH. I know, i also agree that it was a dick move from her part. But hey, at least she redeemed herself at the end
