Prince Rama Varma - Vanajakshi - Kalyani Adi Tala Varnam

Prince Rama Varma, accompanied by Sri S.R.Vinu, Sri B.Harikumar and Dr.S.Karthick, renders the sweet Varnam in Kalyani on Lord Soundararaja of Nagapattinam, composed by Nagapattinam Sri Veeraswamy Pillai, sometimes wrongly attributed to other composers.
Varma ji also sings four lines of Swarams in the last Charanam, which is how this Varnam is usually rendered in Kerala, while in most other versions, the third line is missing for some reason.

He just recorded some songs which he hasn't sung much during concerts 😊 I requested him to do more too. Apart from the Varnams, songs like Sri Kamalambike have come out so beautifully too

@@musiquebox Please please make him sing Nagumomu and other popular tyagaraja krithis. I know that this is a cliched request but when it comes to Varmaji, finding his version of a Trinity krithi is a lot more difficult than finding a kaiwara Amara nareyana or bhadrachala ramadasa krithi.

When I first met Varma ji around 30 years back, he used to have around three or four concerts per year and he would use those platforms, mostly to bring out rare songs. It was I who kept requesting him to sing at least a few popular songs, which would reflect his caliber and class, which was how he started to sing at least a few popular songs like Deva Deva Kalayami and Vatapi.
It would help a lot in gaining popularity if he were to sing more popular songs, but Varma ji has always been service minded and he keeps saying that our music is so vast and multi faceted that it is not restricted to just a handful of composers who lived aound the same time, two centuries ago, or the same fifteen to twenty Ragas which are sung again and again. This is why he concentrates more on the composers who lived before and after the typical time frame, song frame and raga frame.
As is the case with anything fresh or original, it will surely take some time to catch on and I am sure that posterity will thank Varma ji for all these precious gems that he has unearthed with so much passion and care.
It would be so easy to make a career, just singing the established songs like Nagumomu, Samajavaragamana, Chakkani RajaMargamu, Alaipayuthe and others.
