First I tear my fabric as it will only tear on the grain. Then I preshrink my fabric. Once the fabric is dry it will automatically go on grain. This is what I was taught in the sixties and I refuse to change. I have had fabric off grain as much as I six inches. I always preshrink my yardage because I want to know how it will be when I start working with the fabric. A teaspoon of Dawn (to remove the oils) and color catchers. You would probably be shocked by how much fabric bleeds.
