@@backwatersandbackroads it's one of the most endangered lighthouses, I believe, in Lake Michigan. It's falling into Lake Michigan slowly but surely. There was a preservation society at one point for it but it was dissolved due to lack of cooperation from the Coast Guard and lack if funds, or so I read. It truly is a sight, much like Stannard Rock, completely forlorn and abandoned.
When my son was young we used to enjoy going up and down the St Joe River in a canoe and like what you described it's a different way of travel. And you see things you do not see from a general roadway Oh it's not the fear of heights is that sudden stop

As a fellow michigander I can appreciate a good lighthouse. We have a list of all the open or non private lighthouses in michigan on our camper wall. Our goal is to slowly mark them all off and every camping trip consists of at least one lighthouse or life saving station. Pretty cool finding out Florida has them too. Might make that a winter bucket list adventure. South East Michigan has been miserably bone chilling cold and I could use a warm vacation. Love the up but definitely not in the winter. I'm just going to live vicariously through you to keep warm. Cool vid 👍🏻👊🏻
The towns feel different by water because you are coming in thru the back door. I just love this little boat and being from SW Florida am totally looking forward to the video series. :) I give you a lot of credit for climbing the lighthouse. I climbed the Barnegat Lighthouse and the combination of the circular pattern, the open backs of the steps and being able to see down is absolutely a nightmare.
I stopped before the end shocked when you told the heights inside. Then you walked around. Outside ! I remember you and that ladder off the boat . I stopped the video right there and you’ve got a really good craft beer coming in PayPal from me . Then I continued and finished . Save a postcard till I can get it in person . Congratulations that is a huge feat. If there is a buck or two leftover get that worthless cur something . God she melts a giants heart lol
Baby steps. Going around the door at the end was the only real challenge. It's so stupid! All in one's head, yet still afraid. Frustrating! It's all about trusting oneself I think, but people hate hearing all for Dr. Phil ranting;) lol
I wonder if wavey was on the lookout for bull sharks, Usually I don't like much music playing for videos but the music u play just makes it right. It mellows me out. So I watched it twice because my brain is getting slow, or something. U ain't going to want to come back, it's been a cold one. Can u imagine building that lighthouse, the footers must be massive, and to get the gradual tapper all the way to the top, Wondering if they built the metal stair system as they went up with the brick then they followed the gradual pitch, would have been something to watch back then . Let's crank some more videos out.
I was wondering what the building process was while climbing it too Z. People were just different (better) back then. All the old pictures from up in my neck of the woods remind me all the time. Music: I almost exclusively use "loco lobo" he's a German fella that loves blues and old timey country music (I guess) i found him back on the shanty beagle days and he just fits the content I think. Lucky for me all his music is free and he makes loads of it. I should send me a thank you card and donation;)

Again, so so 😎. I hope you gave that gift shop lady your channel. What a blessing she was. The Cuban rafts, I'm familiar with as growing up in Miami lots of Cubans kept coming over on rafts from Cuba back in the 70s. Be safe. Lighthouses are cool.
awesome video! we are huge lighthouse nerds, visiting lighthouses whenever possible. it's not the height that does me in, its the spiral climb, every level i have to stop because i literally get sick from the spinning effect.
I love!! Lighthouses. I must have been one. If you like movies, check out one called "The Vanishing" based on a true story of 4 lighthouse keepers on a remote rock off Scotland who (you guessed it) vanished. The boat in the movie is awesome too ;)
As an aside to your lighthouse adventure I have a friend who repairs lighthouses for the national park service all over the country and I happened to have a picture of Alex standing on top of that one and I don't mean the walk way I'm mean the very top of that dome What's more amazing is that he's in he's seventies and still doing it
Brenton, re New Smyrna... Smyrna like Smirnoff... Smir-Na. Have an old buddy's whose family has a cottage in New Smyrna Beach... played lots of golf and partied a bit in that area. There's a 'gentlemen's club' in that area where I 'lost' a lot of green... Bottoms Up Club, even got the t-shirt... some stories to tell when you get back!

Got to get up there! Others have done it. Doing it solo is the hard part. Having to tie your boat up and hope the weather holds. Getting dropped off and having the boat move away and pick up up later (hopefully) best. The problem is, the beagle is the only one who ever joins me...cause he has no choice! ;) the day I was there was actually an amazing day weather wise. We'll get her done this summer. If I was with you I’d be staying in the car with with Wavy. I have that fear of heights as well. Light houses, cliffs, tall buildings scare me. Afraid I’m going to jump. Airplanes though. No problem. Never been able to figure that out. I guess you’re more contained in the plane, lol😢

Roy, your boat would be perfect for this area. I've been very surprised by just how much room and freedom there is down here. Just like the riverways, if your boat drafts less than 3 feet (2 is better) it opens up a whole world of places to tuck in and leave the rest behind. I've been paying by turn off after turn off into little coves and hidden bends and islands. Even tonight I'm anchored next to a busy bridge and its just me and a shanty boater and a small sailboat fella. Life is awesome down here in the winter, but I still prefer my Superiorland summers ;) thanks for watching Roy, it's always an honor.

I envision it's somewhat like me, on a very tight budget...but you just do it anyway somehow;) As I'm slowly passing by countless 200k-million+ water front homes, usually with 100k boats on lifts out front (rarely any sign people actually live in them) I can't help but think: "this is why most people don't have time to do something involved" then I have to catch myself and say "most people don't have the same/similar values that I have" and i can't be righteous about it. To each their own. If I had a million bucks (even 200k) I'd keep doing what I'm already doing, but I could relax and enjoy it more because I wouldn't be so worried about money.
Little doggy would indeed be a soft, tasty gator snack. I know an obese French bulldog that is always getting loose and dangerously close to the gaterways. It's a Darwin award waiting to happen. Did you know gators put people under logs to marinate them before dining? We marinate gators before we eat them, so I guess it's only fair that they do it to us.
I was hoping to do a loop up to Jacksonville and then back down the St. John's river to the headwaters (which would only be 30 mns from where I started) but I've run out of time for this excursion. I have to head home for a few weeks, but I'm leaving the vagabond down here and returning in March for another winter escape.
I wonder whose bright idea it was to put that historical narrative there about the lightkeeper's heart failure. Coulda put that one on the grounds somewhere. Anyway, I bet your heart would've failed if one of those old, rusty beams holding up that wrap-around walkway gave out.

Now all you need to do is go to ten more lighthouses and do the same thing over and over. Familiarity and frequency of exposure overcomes phobias. I am sure you probably know that. The talk show host Craig Ferguson overcame his fear of flying by becoming a pilot.
@@backwatersandbackroads - You might want to purchase an OSHA approved safety harness. It was mandatory when I was installing glass on airport control towers and high rises. Also, next time you are at the top pull out your phone and play a game of solitaire or angry birds. This forces you to concentrate on something else besides your location. Lastly, dress warm because for every 1000 ft. of elevation comes with a loss of 3.5 degrees Fahrenheit or 2 degrees Celsius unless you are working within a weather phenomena known as an inversion. The worst part is heavy winds. Don’t climb in anything above 25 knots sustained unless you absolutely have to. Best of luck.

Okay Jeff. I'll keep that in mind. There's a couple other viewers who've said they want it too. I did bring the title with me in case I decided to sell it (i wasn't sure I'd keep it until this trip) I'm finding it's a very handy boat. Covers a lot of bases. I got it so cheap, I have the rare option of "buying it back from myself" I can't think of another boat quite like it to replace it. I know a fella who JUST sold his in Texas. Way better shape than mine (cosmetically) I hear Nimble only made 28 of the vagabond. probably hard to find.

I envision it's somewhat like me, on a very tight budget...but you just do it anyway somehow;) As I'm slowly passing by countless 200k-million+ water front homes, usually with 100k boats on lifts out front (rarely any sign people actually live in them) I can't help but think: "this is why most people don't have time to do something involved" then I have to catch myself and say "most people don't have the same/similar values that I have" and i can't be righteous about it. To each their own. If I had a million bucks (even 200k) I'd keep doing what I'm already doing, but I could relax and enjoy it more because I wouldn't be so worried about money.

Little doggy would indeed be a soft, tasty gator snack. I know an obese French bulldog that is always getting loose and dangerously close to the gaterways. It's a Darwin award waiting to happen. Did you know gators put people under logs to marinate them before dining? We marinate gators before we eat them, so I guess it's only fair that they do it to us.

I was hoping to do a loop up to Jacksonville and then back down the St. John's river to the headwaters (which would only be 30 mns from where I started) but I've run out of time for this excursion. I have to head home for a few weeks, but I'm leaving the vagabond down here and returning in March for another winter escape.

Yeap! She's a "pocket Beagle" I got her in Arkansas back in Nov. 2016. I was on. Scooter adventure, stuffed her in my riding suit and blasted home. :)

Now all you need to do is go to ten more lighthouses and do the same thing over and over. Familiarity and frequency of exposure overcomes phobias. I am sure you probably know that. The talk show host Craig Ferguson overcame his fear of flying by becoming a pilot.

@@backwatersandbackroads - You might want to purchase an OSHA approved safety harness. It was mandatory when I was installing glass on airport control towers and high rises. Also, next time you are at the top pull out your phone and play a game of solitaire or angry birds. This forces you to concentrate on something else besides your location. Lastly, dress warm because for every 1000 ft. of elevation comes with a loss of 3.5 degrees Fahrenheit or 2 degrees Celsius unless you are working within a weather phenomena known as an inversion. The worst part is heavy winds. Don’t climb in anything above 25 knots sustained unless you absolutely have to. Best of luck.

Okay Jeff. I'll keep that in mind. There's a couple other viewers who've said they want it too. I did bring the title with me in case I decided to sell it (i wasn't sure I'd keep it until this trip) I'm finding it's a very handy boat. Covers a lot of bases. I got it so cheap, I have the rare option of "buying it back from myself" I can't think of another boat quite like it to replace it. I know a fella who JUST sold his in Texas. Way better shape than mine (cosmetically) I hear Nimble only made 28 of the vagabond. probably hard to find.

As a sailor, I cringe a little when I hear you say your "parking" your boat. You dock a boat. You Moor a boat. You anchor a boat. I don't thing you can park a boat unless you have it on a trailer. That said I really am enjoying your adventures.
Oh yes...I'm an unconventional boater :) boats, scooters...vehicles, and just tools to explore. I'll work on my nautical lingo. Thanks for watching man
