The words are taken from a Tang dynasty poem by, I think, Li Bai, and descriibe the feelings of a man posted to frontier duty far from his family and in a desolate region.

Guqin indeed has no place in huge ensemble, like hundreds of musicians and use all eight categories of instruments, but it does serve in small band some time, as the band in the East room in Zenghouyi's Tomb.
guqin in very ancient times used to be played along with the se, other zither. but I guess it became a solo instrument because of the influence of confucian thought, which regarded it as the adequate instrument for the "gentlemen", or "educated". I guess the guzheng could be used in its place in an ensemble.

They also exist in the Philippines (kulintang, gandingan, agong), Malaysia (kulintangan, talempong, agung), Indochina (Thailand=pi phat) and Korea (pyeongcheong). The ideas or instruments themselves were derived either directly or indirectly from the ancient Chinese bianzhong (the instrument shown).

Hmmm, not exactly ancient as the first melody, Guan Shan Yue, first appeared in a qinpu that was published in the early 20th century... Shenren Chang, however, is ancient (1549). The se used here looks like a modern se rather than the ones originally used (but I can't see the tail end to say for sure...)

炎黃 日本的語法跟漢語完全是两碼子事，不可相提並論。日本文字不完全，於是借用了中文和拼音而構成了日文。日本受唐朝影響最深，是公認的。
