Ya SE really failed us XI players with 14. We are the ones who made them rich and gave them all the money to make ff14. All they had to do was give us a modern ff11 and they messed it up royally. What would a modern ff11 look like? Basically eldon ring and instead of 6-18 man content, it would be 1-3 primarily. Completely shifts the focus where it should be like in ff11, social/community content. Making it about the journey not the destination, having fun with friends so the grindy or random chance aspect of it doesn't matter as much. That way they don't need to add in instant gratification and casual mechanics. It's not about everytime you play something handed to you, it's about getting on and having fun with a friend or two.
my first mmo ever. Remember how fun doing that aggro ability that does big damage on my thief (very hazy memories). Also ninja tanking and blasting everything on black mage.
I started playing this in early 2004 and it launched my whole MMO gaming experience! My brother and I shared a computer and that thing NEVER turned off, when he went to bed (which was early in the mornings after playing all night) I would hop on and play until he woke up in the evening haha. Man this game was something else, you just had to be there to really understand how magical this game was. Being forced to actually look for help and talking to other people really broke down a lot of barriers in a lot of people, made you open up. You couldn't get anywhere unless you made friends. MMOs now days don't have that kind of system. I could spend hours just talking about how this game changed my life for the good and the bad. My two biggest highlights of this game was killing King Behemoth with my LS and doing Absolute Virtue for 16 hrs and not getting a kill T.T I wanna play on this private server but I'm a bit afraid lol
For anyone that played the original version very well knows this was the best MMORPG! It literaly took you into another world and honestly 10 year removed it still gives a feeling in my soul that has never been filled by another game! This was one of the greatest games ever made hands down. Too bad we get old and have responsibilities lol. Miss this soooo much.
Favorite things included but not limited to: 1. The simple questing system that gives you a task and you can figure out how to complete on your own. It's not grab these 7 "!"s then follow the map indicators and all that meaninglessness. 2. You can pretty much play this game with one hand on the numpad. 3. Subjob system is very fun and while not every combo works it added variance into how your played your class. War/Nin tanks waaay different than something like War/Mnk. 4.
I agree so much, the quests are awesome and I love in FFXI how big features have these lore inspired quests, like unlocking your chocobo or getting your class/job
My favorite game of all time. To this day, every time I see anything about it I feel so nostalgic and get these intense pangs to resub lol. Asheron's Call a very close #2! I think the EQ inspirations that SE took for XI are very apparent, at least in the original version of the game pre-Trust system etc. Definitely a classic, team based, gear chasing, super punishing yet highly rewarding, old-school MMO.

I always used to play with a logitech G11 which had 18 macro keys. That was by far the best way to play FFXI imo. Nowadays I use a controller rather than contorting my hand into weird shapes to hit alt+7 lol. Glad to see you supporting Eden, maybe I'll see you in game!
I love the menu based combat, it makes it really easy to communicate with your party. Like you I tried the keyboard and mouse at first but eventually switched over to a playstation controller after a few hours. I tried out Eden a few years ago but after spending a few days trying to get a group for dunes (as a WHM) I gave up, but it seems to have increased in population since then so maybe I'll give it another shot. Don't forget to get Amelila's HD graphics overhaul, they are a pain to install but absolutely worth it.
I play on Eden. It is the same game from 2007 (with some 2008 updates now). Having quality of life inclusions like mog wardrobe and level sync do help out a lot and do not detract from the original difficulty and subsequent feeling of accomplishment the game gives you. I would recommend to any returning player or new players who are curious about what old-school MMOs brought to the table.

The timing is bad right now what with Yelinak launching soon and me planning to go pretty hard on it, but I'll really have to give this a shot some day. Would be good to go back and visit this strange(r) but great MMORPG.
I love ffxi so much. I am seriously thinking of getting this because thats what i remember but is the current version drastically different? I play wow still so i would want the old school game i love and also play wow which i love. I would rather go with the private server if the current version is way different.
Yes if you play official it is drastically different, leveling is faster there are new ways to get xp, and mostly everybody uses their trusts as their group mates
Oh, FFXI was ABSOLUTELY built with the base expectation that you were using a controller. I get that some people might like the keyboard and mouse controls but I'm sorry it's undeniable how the devs intended you to play. This is coming from somebody who first played on PC and didn't have a controller so I had to use keyboard and mouse at the time.
I played both ways but preferred controller. At higher levels people used keyboard and mouse on PC because hnm mobs or any mob popped on PC and were targetable first before Xbox or ps2. So if you were not on PC you were not claiming an hnm for the most part.
There is add on plug ins for windower 4 and other ways of making it HD I play it 3440x1440 resulution all set highest settings and it looks very nice even after 20 years hahaha 😂

I love ff11, it was my first MMO and when my Xbox got the ring of death it was the reason I went out and bought a PC so I could play it... and then I bought WoW... I miss FF11 so much. I wish they would have made FF14 like 11, it is in my opinion the superior game.
The fact that the game was made as a PS2 exclusive is why controller is by far the better way to control it. They only ported it to PC because the PS2 required expensive console add-ons and not many people wanted to spend that much. KB+M is nothing but wonky trying to use in the game, no matter how you make the (limited) adjustments.
I just saw this video; I'm not sure if you're interested, but there's a.. ehrmmm, unofficial server that is launching in about 10 days or so that is going to be a TLP model. For some reason, their era starts at Chains of Promathia rather than the base game, or Zilart, but it sounds like it might be a lot of fun still :) Do a search for "HorizonXI" if you're interested
I can never hate on PoL simply because it has Dolphin and Space lol. Dealing with it on current live isn’t that bad either. My biggest hang up with XI was its installation of both XI and PoL on Disc whenever it was reinstalled; half a day for all the discs and 2-3 days for all the updates on PoL (probably because the computer was dated at the time of reinstallation) but hey, that’s just more time to jam out

You may already know what I’m about to say and if so, I’m sorry, but make sure you go to the separate program called Pad config in your ffxi install folder, then the easiest way is to pick from the options on the left, ABCD or E one of those will make your controller work or sometimes you got to check the Xpad on the top right. You can test the controller to make sure it works in the pad config as well. Folder should be this to find SquareEnix > Final Fantast XI > ToolsUS > FFXiPadConfig

Horizon XI launches Saturday, December 17, 2022 and according to the devs they’ve fix a lot of the glitches all other private servers have. You should check it out.
Getting an account set up and the playonline stuff configured these days is just BS. I was feeling real nostalgic, and was going to get back into this with my wife, but the new way to set it up and get configured is SO TEDIOUS AND BAD that I just gave up.

This server is really held back by its "elitst" playerbase who are only interested in making groups of the most meta and "Efficient" class combos. It's difficult to have that fresh adventure like experience when this attitude permeates everywhere

Amazing, I played when it first came out. Used to die outside bastok sheep's. Eventually I got my relic Exclaibur and aegis and stopped.

Yeah even today that PoL takes a long time, I think it’s capped at how fast it can’t download at a low bandwidth
