      You dont need to do lifesavers ever time you pull away. Like after stopping in traffic or waiting at traffic lights. Its only after the bike has been parked

    I just passed mine today at the first attempt. I was SO nervous before but here are a few things that helped me. I was a bit wobbly at slow speed due to nerves and being on an unfamiliar big bike (I was restricted to a 125 of course). To stop the wobbling at junctions etc, I squeezed my knees into the tank. It's amazing how that helps you balance. I also rode with purpose and confidence on the test. If you go from a 30mph zone to a 40mph zone, get up to speed as quickly as you can. The instructors don't like dawdlers. Don't exceed the speed limit of course but just get up to speed briskly. It shows the instructor you are confident. Remember to cancel your indicators, always stop at a stop sign and remember to do your life savers. The ride lasted 40 minutes but it didn't seem anything like that. Oh and remember to keep doing your lifesavers as you ride into the test centre at the end of the test. You haven't finished until you switch the bike off and dismount. Good luck!

      Great bit of advice
      Adding to having good balance - remember high revs always helps a lot! (as well as a light bike of course..)

      Holding the rear break helps being more stable when moving slowly. Like when doing the figure of 8 gently on the rear while doing it will keep you alot more stable.

    • @Interknetz
      @Interknetz 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@budman8926 Yup. We covered that on the pass plus thing. Only costed £15 for like 6 hours of training. We did a good amount of balance related things in a car park such as standing on one side of the bike, picking up a bottle and putting it on a thin pole, etc. Was just as enjoyable as the CBT.

      ss ss I actually passed my A1 without any lessons by watching videos just like yours. So I know it helps a lot. I did my A1 as all I want to ride is my Vespa Primavera, I do regret not doing my test in the 80s where you passed if you came around the block not having fallen off. Not that the examiner actually went round with you. Now it's gone the other way, needlessly expensive to get an A licence. In the 80 we all rode 250s on L plates for ever, no CBT.

      @@C9S1 thanks for your reply bro. A bit of background- I’m 29- my families heritage/ethnicity is British Pakistani. When I was 14 I went to Pakistan for 2 months and I learnt to ride bikes then. I rode a geared 125 Honda CBR everyday for just under 2 months and fell in love with bikes and cars. I got my drivers license at 19 in Uk but never forgot how to ride a bike, in my opinion changing gears on a bike and a car is exactly the same but different controls/levers and pedals. Summer 2020 I ended up having extra time like most people so I decided to get my full bike license- July 2020 I did my cbt which was a walk in the park. End of Aug I had my 3 day DAS (2days training 3rd day MOD1 & MOD2) and passed both first time (40 miles from my home town) my instructor didn’t like me at all and we kind of fell out on day 2. I was sure I would fail as he took all my confidence away and told me I’m not going to make it. Night of Day 2 I watched your videos- took notes and on the day applied everything I learnt and passed Mod1 with zero minors and Mod2 with 4 minors! So to anyone reading this I’d highly recommend your videos! Thanks once again!!

      @@s5hundred296 No problem man, better late than never haha. I've just spend the past few hours replying to all the comments over the past half year as I've been out of it 😂
      What an inspiration story lol, love the bit on you watching it taking notes. and you basically aced the mod 1 which just makes it perfect. Funnily enough I heard a very similar story from someone at uni who went to their home asian country, Nepal I think it was? And got hooked on bikes.
      I made them for this purpose: Tbh I thought the A1 / A2 tests were just a load of bs and a money making scam (still do) as so little of it reflects on every day riding, and the margin of error of failing in certain things is unnecessary. Anyway that's all in the past and we're left with memories / stress doing it we won't ever forget but in a good way!

    • @s5hundred296
      @s5hundred296 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@C9S1 you’re absolutely right man. A1 and A2 in my opinion is just 65 minutes of riding how someone expects you to. Let be honest you’re always going to do a U turn and put your feet down. Also in my advantage the Mod1 grid for manoeuvres in the actual test was much wider than what I learnt on so was a piece of cake imo. When I learnt my Mod1 avoidance exercise/hazard avoidance it was torrential rain and my instructor only let me go to 20 max so the first time I hit the 32mph/50kmh was actually on the day!! My instructor was an ex traffic police so he was extremely strict. Annoying for me but may have helped me as he was so so extra. He said he was so surprised when I passed/ but forget all that- I now spend my Sundays riding MT09’s/Ninjas/Streetfighters and soon S100RRs. Once again thank you. You really helped me the night before the real thing. F*ck insurance though! Even at 29
      It’s difficult to get insured on a super bike!

  • @Mr.M1STER
    @Mr.M1STER 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I passed my test in Ireland two days ago. We do it slightly different over here although most of the elements are the same. We just to the U-turn and slow ride and other manoeuvres out on the road. U-turn and slow ride typically being done in a quiet housing estate. In my opinion while waiting in traffic or at lights it is always best to keep the bike in first gear and clutch in. You always want to be ready to move straight away if you need to instead of fumbling around changing feet to get the bike into first which would also mean taking your foot off the rear brake which imo I wouldn't do in traffic either.

    just watched this out of curiosity as I've been riding for years, but just to say anyone asking about gears at lights or when stopped, the test seems to think that having your right foot covering the back brake when stopped is the safest but in the real world you will find you will probably want to find neutral to give your clutch hand a rest, and put your right foot down (i can't think of any occasion which would require me to use my back brake from a standstill position, unless your on some really steep hill} also you know your going to be in first when you pull away if you have to physically do it. there will be times when you can just hold the clutch in and keep it in first but you will want that left foot on the peg ready for the change as you pull away, to be honest, you don't use the back brake much anyway .also mention preloading rear shocks when taking pillions too if your bike has twin shocks, good video though, good luck anyone doing their test soon

      Em's Bikestories that is actually what is advised. DVSA advises to check you mirrors every 5-10 seconds and everytime you have to slow down, speed up, see danger ahead, and change road. Which means you end up looking at your side mirrors more than you're actually looking ahead. It's ridiculous, but you need to do it for your exam.

    • @Yeldur
      @Yeldur 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately I failed due to that multi-lane roundabout at the start of the video, I ended up in the wrong lane and corrected myself stupidly, ended up cutting across a lane (I did do a lifesafer and there were no cars behind me, but no indicator) by accident which gave me a serious fault right out the gate sadly. Lesson learned, I have no experience with them unfortunately as I have none that are nearby to me other than one which I never use as it's nowhere near any of my commute routes/ride out routes. Booked myself in for another training day where we can focus purely on the multi-lane roundabouts, once that's down, I should be all good for whatever I need to be.
      It's a right bitch but whatever, as Bram Stoker said "We learn from failure, not from success!"

    • @C9S1
      @C9S1  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ah sorry to hear that. Don't worry, you'll learn from that mistake. That's why I wanted to make it clear in the video to not worry about being in the wrong lane or taking the wrong route, as safely correcting yourself / turning back may not even get you a minor, but doing so dangerously to stay on route will be a major. Anyway, if that's the only reason you failed you'll smash it next time!

      That's great to hear this video is perfect for you then haha. Done my A1, A2 and driving test all in Uxb with no problems at all - I found the roads there to be decent. Riding round in the area on your bike is the best thing you can do, and treat it as if it's your real test. Some advice with the Uxb area - make sure you go on Cowley Road, Oxford Road, Harefield Road and Hillingdon Road which are the main roads you'll be using (check Google maps) and go in as many side roads / residential areas as you can to get an idea. Also a fair amount of the test will likely be in Iver and Iver Heath, west of Uxb which have a nice amount of country roads with national speed limits so ride around in the area to familiarize yourself with it. Also don't get caught out from going from a 40 to a 20 zone (for example on The Greenway where Uxbridge high school is)

    Got my test tomorrow, just a couple of questions if I may! My instructor said that you shouldn't indicate when overtaking a bus IF you can get passed without switching lanes, is this correct? Also, he said I will get asked to "filter if it's safe to do so" - he told me NOT to filter, and if the examiner asks, just say I didn't think it was safe. Is this normal..?

    • @C9S1
      @C9S1  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sorry just saw this, think I'm too late but hope your test went well today!
      1. You shouldn't really be in that situation because a. the examiner could fail you on it for being dangerous b. ideally you want to switch lanes anyway to make sure there is a good amount of space if the bus was to swerve out which I'd recommend anyway (and if you can't do that just stay back) but yes technically yes you don't need to if you're staying in the same lane,
      2. I've never heard that one before, and would be surprised if an examiner ever says that! In any situation regardless, NEVER FILTER IN YOUR TEST. There's just too many chances of things going wrong (and getting a major/failing). If you decide not to filter if the examiner explicitly says it, most you would get is a minor/s under the 'progress' category I'd imagine.

    • @youngsandwich
      @youngsandwich 7 ปีที่แล้ว +22

    I passed both mods first time in 2016. Once I got my licence I no longer felt it was necessary to perform a left and right shoulder check before I set off (unless I am aware of other motorcycles/bicycles behind me). However I do perform a life saver before changing lanes and turning into a junction and I constantly check my mirrors even without noticing it. It's a shame car drivers don't receive the same extensive tests like motorcyclists.

    • @C9S1
      @C9S1  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      What DVSA tests for in 'safe riding' is, in my opinion, is very different from the real world and many things seem obsolete - taking into consideration observations from very safe and proficient riders I've seen. Obviously DVSA ways are more dummy proof / fail safe in a way and not advanced. Idle life savers are pointless stopped at lights in most situations as you say, and are taught to in case of any last minute overtaking bikes / cars. In reality good observations prior means you shouldn't have to rely on this at all - especially if you're setting off and staying in the same trajectory (and not immediately moving to the left or right lane), but this is where it starts to get technical, hence DVSA's 'fail proof' ways which seem ridiculous to do in most ordinary circumstances. Also others factors such as speed setting off and lane position (if filtering) come into play.
      It really is - and a lot of bad car instructors out there make it worse (my one actually properly taught me the importance of shoulder checks / blind spots - mainly directed at motorcycles being more hidden) before I even rode a bike, and this followed through. If everyone taking the car test had the same level of training needed for bikes the roads would be a much safer place. And as you've discovered everyone has their own riding style, and if it serves you well and have a good record with it, keep it like that. Part of becoming a safe rider is experience in combination with advanced rider training and schemes etc.

    Great vid, just as a contrast I took my test in 1978 which consisted of the examiner standing on the road with a clipboard and telling you where you had to ride so for most of the time he couldn’t even see you. The emergency stop was laughable he pointed out which parked car he would emerge from and you had to perform a controlled stop lol. No written, no two stage, just one simple test, after passing on a 250 I drove straight to the local dealers and signed up for a 750. Anyway I’m returning to bikes after 39 years away before I become to old and decrepit, but I’ll take a few refresher courses before hand.

      The Future You’re absolutely right about the ageing bod, you can’t take anything like the abuse you once could. I laid down a deposit on a V Strom 1000cc, pick it up in a few weeks once I sort out all the gear, lid, leathers etc. Stay safe and enjoy the summer it’s on the way👍

    awsome video, very informative ! I live in belgium and i failed my MOD 2. Really a bummer because he failed me on driving 50 where i was supposed to drive 70. that was my one and only mistake. anyway i got my temporary "L" and have 1 year to redo it. I did not know the area of the test centre and thats why i was confused about the speed zone where i sacked. So it really helps if you do know the area where you are going to do your exam. still bummed to this day (failed 2 weeks ago). Now i got my bike and i'm gonna ride alot in the exam area so i wont be surprised again. Wish me luck !!

    The route seems long, are you told the route before you set off or is the instructor telling you in your ear as you are on route ?

    Failed mine on Friday at Uxbridge! With only 3 minors and about 200metres to the test centre and end of exam, I was at a traffic light in lane singalling to turn right in front of a box junction (right arrow clearly on the ground). Some 18 wheeler from Europe decides to come past me on the left lane (arrow indicating straight on his lane) and pulls up ahead, put his truck ahead of me and turns in slightly to the right. If I raised my right elbow an inch I would have touched him he got that close to me. I moved off and took the right turn because I had enough space to get into the new road otherwise if he moved off, he would've touched my front wheel or even crushed me. The exit wasn't even clear for him and had he taken it, his trailer would've blocked the whole box junction!! Examiner said, I should've stayed put but he was several meters behind me so very unlikely the truck would've made contact with him from where he was positioned. I'm a competent rider and had this gut feeling, it wasn't me who was going to mess up but someone else for me. Absolutely effing fuming. Passed Mod1 first time. Could've passed Mod2 first time but for the actions of another road user. I have to wait 10 days to do again but the weather will only get worse as it chucked it down the whole time I was riding!!! Honestly feel like it was my best chance to pass and unnecessarily have to fork out more cash to do something I technically passed first time round. Absolute wanker HGV effed up my exam when he could've waited knowing full well I'm wearing high-vis with an examiner clearly behind me on a bigger bike. Gutted! :(

      Really hope you eventually passed mod 2 mate, that is some bs I have to say 😔
      I think I can roughly visualise where you probably would have been.
      That was one of my greatest worries doing mod 2 tbh, is that you can't control what other idiots on the road can do...which can mean you easily fail through no fault on your own.
      AS we all learn quickly mod 1 and mod 2 is a lot of bs, that doesn't really teach you day to day realities of riding a motorcycle safely...

    Great video thanks! What bike are you riding and how did you get it to the test as I take it it’s your personal bike. Also when cars are parked on your side of the road and you have to step out do you have to mirror, signal, life saver and manoeuvre or not need to signal and just mirror and life saver

    i tried my mod 1 at that place, its in uxbridge for anyone wondering. dunno who was working there when i was there (late 2022) but they were all assholes, and failed me on a technicality because my bike doesnt have ABS.
    tip for new riders: avoid the uxbridge test centre.

    went for mod 1 it was freezing, so was shaking then adrenaline kicks in. shaking more. I have no imagination, so just see a carpark with random cones,. Also test centre was on a massive slope. Only practiced on level surfaces. FAILED.
    125cc bikes with 100kg rider don’t accelerate up hill to 50kph. (Confused me by metric) 2nd attempt at getting to speed and missed the gear by going full throttle.
    Car park test is a nightmare. Why can’t they have a test centre with a artificial road / circuit.

    did cbt last may passed theory first time last september (2017) passed mod 1 first time three weeks ago no faults despite being riddled with nerves. Then failed mod 2 this week despite feeling reasonably less stressed than on my mod 1. Needless to say I've taken it really badly and am feeling extremely morose about it all. Your videos were both extremely helpful and clear although I only came across this one today and watched after the fail. I had 2 serious and 1 minor so am feeling like an idiot and now I have three weeks to wait and all those damn nerves are setting back in.

    • @C9S1
      @C9S1  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Imo you've already done the hardest part. Mod 1 is out the way.
      Hopefully the video should make you feel a lot better, watch it few more times along with other mod 2 videos - it should relax and accustom you to it more. Try not to stress yourself out in that time. What the minors/majors in?

    • @symphonyofpain1880
      @symphonyofpain1880 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks buddy. The minor was lane discipline. One major was blatant. I came onto a big main road couldn't see any speed signs but did what I've been taught which was to get up to speed asap so believing this road was a 50mph i got to 46 when the examiner said slow down you're in a 40. Hands up on that one no excuse. The other was a bit more vague and I don't remember the incident but it was something about an incorrect signal on a roundabout giving other road users incorrect information. My instructor was actually pretty shocked he said from what he's seen of my riding he put money on me passing.

    • @C9S1
      @C9S1  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not to worry, nothing that can't easily be improved upon. Here's some helpful pointers:
      1. Make sure you're 100% clear on your position 1s, 2s, 3's etc
      2. With speed limits, if you miss a sign or are unsure what the speed better to wait it out and adjust your speed (and get a minor for failing to make progress) rather than to speed and get a major.
      3. Always, always be on high alert when using signals and canceling signals not just for your test, but after as it can put you in a extremely dangerous situation, and even get you T-boned if you're not careful. At roundabouts, remember to signal left straight after you pass the exit before your exit you're coming off at
