    What’s happening at end of Young Lust is that while Pink is having his indiscretions Stateside, Mrs Pink is entertaining a new flame at home as well…largely as a result of The Wall that is being built.

    Young Lust may be their most pure rock and roll song and along with The Nile Song, one of their hardest.

      Oooh, Nile Song. I remember a highschool teacher who didn't like the punk music we listened to, wondering why we didn't stick to only Pink Floyd. -- My lil'brother played him The Nile Song on walkman and he started grimacing, "what kind of shit is that?!". His jaw hit the floor when he showed him the tape cassette.

    Mr. Floyd, the musician, is on tour in the US, living the R&R lifestyle w/the groupies. He calls home, only to find out that his wife is also cheating on him.

    • @grelch
      @grelch 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yep. Pink the rock star is touring the US. He’s lonely so he calls his wife but a man keeps answering the phone at his house in the UK. His wife is cheating on him. And in the meantime Pink looks for “dirty woman” groupies after gigs to try and fill “the spaces where we used to talk”. Pink’s starting to lose his mind.

    • @antonioiniguez1615
      @antonioiniguez1615 ปีที่แล้ว

      I never realized his wife was cheating on him as well. I just thought this chapter in the album was about him sleeping around as a way to cope which only ends up hurting him more.

    If you get a chance listen to When the Tigers Broke free, it was cut from the original album and put on a b side cut yet it was in the movie. The song was in the beginning and it really showed you the true aspect of the movie.

    In the film, Goodbye Blue Sky and Empty Spaces are set to the first of several incredible animation sequences. Also, the film has an extended version of Empty Spaces, that has more lyrics and doesn't lead directly into Young Lust like it does on the album.

    The first side isn't really chronological. It's the increasing forcefulness of the emotional and psychological stresses or "bricks" that justify the psychological wall being built. Empty Spaces is really about Pink's wife. Empty spaces refers to two things; the holes in the brick wall yet to be filled and the empty spaces of a once loving relationship. There is a contrast explored in this song that is one of the running themes through the album first heard at the end of Another Brick pt.2 with the ringing phone.
    In Empty Spaces the backwards recording is Roger congratulating a listener who has deciphered this message. The key though is near the end of Roger's statement. He is interrupted by James Guthrie, one of the engineers and producers. Guthrie interrupts Roger telling him his new wife, Carolyne, is on the phone and Roger says OK, presumably taking the call from "a man answering". The emphasis is that when Roger's spouse calls he will come to the phone. Later at the end of Young Lust, one of Roger's most painful events is played out for Mr. Floyd. The back story is that Roger called his wife, Judy, at home in England while he was touring in the US. Of course a man answered the phone and promptly hung up. Judy never came to the phone. Roger and Judy divorced soon after.
    Young Lust jumps back in time where Pink is a fresh young musician out on his own living the rock 'n' roll lifestyle. What is to come is a double standard that either argues as justification or perhaps as an expression of regret. Right after Young Lust a little skit plays out where a groupie gets into Pink's hotel room and wants to party. She ends up running out because of the emotional out burst from Pink. What it says though is that this is a common occurrence particularly on tour and the groupie runs away not because Pink is a faithful husband who rejects these encounters but because he has gotten sick of these people taking pieces of him. Cleary it's OK to fool around for the star of the show but not for the lonely wife back home. Either way these add the final bricks to Pink's wall as the first half of the album closes.

    The Wall's movie version of Empty Spaces is longer with more lyrics. I'm glad you're listening to the album without the videos. The videos for each song are from the movie, some are quite grainy on TH-cam because they're homemade by fans from the movie, the only clear videos are from the albums single releases. The movie The Wall, like the album, is best experienced all at once.

    On the double live CD of the Wall, in between Goodbye Blue Sky and Young Lust is the missing tune What Shall We Do Now, a cool cut they added to the Live show and was cut from the album because of vinyl space limitations. You should hunt for it on You Tube, worth a listen. Enjoy. 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶

      It's an extended version of Empty Spaces, and it really fills in (heh) a lot of detail about what we use to fill those empty spaces. It helps make clear that The Wall is about the dehumanization that lurks under the thin ice of modern life that results in addiction, alienation, disconnection from others, and taken to an extreme, the fascism we see in the surrogate band and the character Pink's evil alter-ego on side 4.

    The lyrics "Ooh, I need a DIRTY woman. Ooh I need a DIRTY girl" directly connects to the lyrics "Mama's gonna check out all your girlfriends for you, Mama won't let anyone DIRTY get through" from the song Mother. It clearly shows how the character's up brining is in big part responsible for his actions as a young man. He's been hurt by "clean" women...so he thinks the solution is to rebel by going to the opposite extreme.

    I was going to say The Wall is the last best album of the 70s (November 30th, 1979). However, The Clash's "London Calling" was released on December 14th of '79. And Christopher Cross's debut album came out on 12-20-79. Regatta de Blanc on October 2nd. Prince's debut on October 19th. Eagles: "The Long Run" September 24. "In Through the Out Door" 8-20-79 is another contender.

    Great reaction! Goodbye Blue Sky is about the London bombings during WWII. The blue skies Londoners said goodbye to as the German's conducted their air raids.
    Empty Spaces actually refers to his deteriorating relationship with his wife while he's home. They're both in the room but not communicating or connecting. Hence empty spaces of time that need to be filled, alluding to his failing marriage contributing to The Wall.
    Young Lust is about the main character's trysts with a groupie in each town, with the phone call being how Pink finds put his wife is having an affair of her own. It's about to get really dark from here on for a bit.

    I've heard the lore, and I'm not sure if it's true, that it was reportedly said that a child in Japan remarked to her mother just prior to the Atom bomb going off..."Look mummy, there's a small plane in the sky". Obviously it was translated. I don't know if it was true. But you could see how easily it could have happened in 1945 during wartime, as it was apparently a calm clear spring day that the first atomic bomb was released by a high flying Superfortress bomber - Enola Gay. Interestingly, and I think that Waters was SUBLIMELY again referring to the interfering mother (in this song) by that quote which reflected the account of the events of the day:
    "On 5 August 1945, during preparation for the first atomic mission, Tibbets assumed command of the aircraft and named it after his mother, Enola Gay Tibbets, who, in turn, had been named for the heroine of a novel.[N 3] When it came to selecting a name for the plane, Tibbets later recalled that:
    '... my thoughts turned at this point to my courageous red-haired mother, whose quiet confidence had been a source of strength to me since boyhood, and particularly during the soul-searching period when I decided to give up a medical career to become a military pilot. At a time when Dad had thought I had lost my marbles, she had taken my side and said, "I know you will be all right, son." '
    Wikipeadia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enola_Gay#Hiroshima_mission
    This is confirmed by the line: "Did you ever wonder why we had to run for shelter when the promise of a brave new world unfurled beneath the clear blue sky"... The brave new world being the Atomic area...running for shelter: away from the fallout. SO POETIC and majestic writing by Waters.

    There are numerous tracks on here that were played as singles, but the album, as you said, is not set up for that. It's a concept album, and has to be played as such. It's also a theatrical piece, as the stage performance and movie show. I just had a light bulb moment about goodbye blue sky, which I love but always thought was a little out of place chronologically.
    I think this is older Pink, probably mid or late teen, reminiscing an airplane scene from his youth. This transitions into him thinking about the war and his father and the remaining destruction present when he was a boy.
    Then things leap forward dramatically. By empty spaces he is already in a failing adult relationship and, as the next song reveals, already an international rock star.
    It was thinking about the huge leap forward in time that gave me the idea about Goodby Blue Sky. It bridges some of that gap.

    Empty Spaces is more of an inside joke about many rock acts being accused of backwards masking Satanic / drug messages into songs and fade outs. This was Floyd flipping the bird to paranoid parents and pollyannas by literally putting in a backward message into a "song" while burning up a minute or two under the guise of setting atmosphere. To me, it is more of a sign of how cynical the band had become of "making a PF album" -- "Okay boys, we need some out of context voices, some atmospheric sounds and totally jaded lyrics. High concept, man." Actually by this point, Waters despised everyone in the band, he had pushed Rick Wright into a contractor role rather than full band member ( they paid Wright session rates to tour the album) and Waters wasn't working directly very much with Gilmour and Mason. The Wall always sounded pre-fab and cynical to me -- not about the supposed subject but the record buyer -- and it is my least favorite as a result.

      @@pmbbmp The backward / subliminal message craze took off in the 80s due to organizations like PMRC but dates back to the Beatles ("I buried Paul"...) and probably others. The "message" itself is obviously direct sarcasm to the listener because it IS backward, it ISN'T subliminal at all and literally says "congratulations, you have just discovered the secret message." It took Waters and producer Bob Ezrin probably five minutes to add to the mix and provided more Pink Floyd trivia for the 15 year old teenager who just dropped $13.99 on the double LP to talk about with his/her friends, like all the trite backstory on Wish You Were Here.
