Flowers of Evil is easily in my top three manga and really changed the way I saw how surrealism and imagery could be conveyed into a story. But I have to say, Blood On The Tracks is quickly catching up to the formers level of beauty. It’s just downright terrifying sometimes and the character of Seiko is on Nakamura standards of compelling, though in a much, much more sinister way. I’m scared for how this manga could conclude, but by hell am I on for the ride!
You've described my thoughts exactly. FOE was high top 10 material for a long time but where BOTT is right now, I can see it taking over depending on how it ends.

I'm reading all the Oshimi's works. The flowers of evil was just AMAZING. Inside Mari was incredible. Nova and Poolside were so WTF but are so interesting. But I could not enjoy a lot Happiness. IDK why but I think that I had heard a lot of great reviews and I had a lot of expectative. And now, i'm reading Blood and it's going so f*king perfect

I get what you mean about Happiness: on the one hand, it is relatively well received, so there is the problem of high expectations, but on the other hand, it doesn't feel like a lot of his others works. Anyways, I really hope you enjoy Blood on the Tracks. It's such a fantastic ride, and might even take FOE for my favourite work of his.

Ngl oshimi might be my favorite mangaka, or both oshimi and asano are my favorites. I can use all these descriptions about how they illustrate their stories but I’m too lazy and imma just say all of em hit right. Inside Mari, flower of evil, happiness, and a trail of blood are all so good. He does not miss. Same w asano, oyasumi pun pun, solanin, and girl by the sea. They all hit different. Also Miaki Sugaru’s novels. If y’all got any similar recommendations please full send as well.
It's been a long time but without finishing I'm in Mari you really can't understand it at all. It completely changes meaning right towards the end and was one of the best interpretations of a specific condition I've ever seen. Masterpiece
I got to this video because of Devil Ecstasy, glad someone's finally got some positive things to say about it, i thought it was thoroughly entertaining especially with the context of Shuzo's later more serious and dramatic storytelling, if i didn't know Shuzo Oshimi wrote it i would totally be sold on the idea that this was an earlier work by Akira Hiramoto or something.
Yeah, the more time I send talking about Oshimi, the more I realize how underappreciated some of his lesser known works are, but as you mentioned, Devil Ecstasy is incredibly entertaining, and at this point in my life, that's all I want out of a manga.
I read Happiness and aku no Hana and reading those felt really special. It didn't feel like let's say a "conventional Manga". In happiness where there were vampires I didn't expect the story to go into the direction it did and that's brilliant. I honestly can't describe what I would call his works, they just feel different but in a good way

Aku no Hana is one of my favorite stories of all time. I consume about 100 books a year, and around 1000-2000 chapters of manga. Somehow though, everytime I look back on AnH it never budges from my top list of favorite pieces of fiction (alongside Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni, Utawarerumono and the Monogatari Light Novel Series). Fantastic author, incredible storyteller and amazing creator of art, this Oshimi. Thank you for this list, doofy.

@@BeansLacking Nothing official has come out about when it will end, but something big just happens in the story that would suggest we are in the final act. As for its release, it is supposed to be bi-weekly, but honestly, it has a very irregular schedule. Chapter 112, for example, was several weeks late, whilst others have come out earlier.

Welcome back alice is one of the few mangas that left a lasting impression on me and made me cry a lot. I’m not even trans but it spoke to me so deeply and helped me understand gender stuff a lot better. Especially what oshimi wrote in the afterword, wow. He’s so brave.
I think it's a manga that I could grow to appreciate even more after a re-read. I felt that it kind of lost its way in the second half, but man, that ending was fantastic.
I think Sweet Poolside is not only about shaving, it is about body Image and the different beauty standards all of us (and especially teenagers) feel the pressure to follow. The male protagonist is getting picked on for having no body hair, whereas the female protagonist has plenty and wants to get rid of it. In the end he tells her to keep her pubic hair because she is beautiful how she is. While I agree that it is not Oshimi’s most meaningful work, I do think that it is a good manga about society’s double standards about male and female bodies and about accepting your changing body during puberty.
Helpful information. Now I know which series I should check out. I like him on blood on the tracks. A nice balance of weirdness with out going too far.
First thing I want to say is it this is a great video I just stumbled upon your channel. You did a great job with the video that I really enjoyed and I watched it from start to finish. The only works I've actually read of this particular creator. Inside mari ( I haven't finished that one I'm on volume 4) The flowers of evil (I finish but I do like it but I do have something that's much more of his work) Happiness (I just finished at about a week ago the entire series I love that series Blood on the tracks ( I'm on volume five of that series and it's crazy it's really creepy what's going on in that one and it's just has all this tension and it keeps you on the edges you seeing what's going to happen between the mother and the son's relationship Welcome back alice ( it's actually really dope I'm on volume of three right now I haven't started it yet but I enjoy that serious I think it's really interesting with the entire subject matter of you know transgender subject matter and really seeing how it affects how Alice came back originally she was a man than transitioned and she really doesn't really identify as the regular binary of male and female she just doesn't equate to that I'm seeing the reaction of everyone else around her how they are dealing with it is great writing) Devils ecstasy I have to get my hands on because the way you described it it sounds very interesting And there's some other manga that I definitely of his work I got to check out but definitely thanks for the recommendations and really good tier list because there are some I've never even heard of at all.

I think him publishing BotT and Alice at the same time started to take a toll on the quality of his work unfortunately, as the second half of Alice felt incomplete. Regardless, still one of my favourite mangaka! Looking forward to his next work.
Currently at chapter 104 of Blood on the Tracks and it’s definitely 100% my favorite manga ever no comparison. It literally changes my mood throughout the day depending on each chapter. Pretty disappointed though of how the story continued after book number 9. Any recommendation on mangas with the same effect on you? Just ordered all of Flowers of Evil.

I do like his big 3, but Avant-Garde Yumeko is one of my favorites just because the perspective on the body is so unique. It's too bad it was never released in English. If you like Oshimi's work but want something a little more raunchy but mature-ish, check out Kazuto Okada's works. I like the shaving one, too, but that story is way too short. I have no idea if the movie is any good.

I started with Inside Mari and Flowers of Evil. Then I've read Happiness and it was really good, but coming after these 2 it didn't entirely hit the right note. Starting Blood on the Tracks right now. No idea what to expect. BTW how did you like Inside Mari ending?
BOTT is a quick and easy read, and overall, its once of Oshimi's best works. Unfortunately, its ending (which is still ongoing) is realllly long winded, but otherwise, its my favourite next to FOE. I never finished Inside Mari, but once I do, I'll let you know. Is it a good ending?
@@mynameisdoofy I've read 1st chapter of BOTT when I realised it's ongoing. I will add it to my list and wait for it to be finished. I don't like to start ongoing mangas, because waiting for chapters is killing me and after some time I lose interest and drop it. And Mari? Ending wasn't something I expected. I had my suspicions, but it surprised me, in a good way. And in terms if it's happy? Well, it's complicated ;) Better see it yourself, but I think you won't be disappointed.
How can you make this tier list without having read the whole manga of inside mari, I think is as good as aku no hana because of the ending, the ending is very important here. Could you please make an update video for this?

Ive read half of Aku no Hana (I didnt wanna read anymore of it), read Chi no Widachi til where it shouldve ended (around Chapter 85 or so) and read a bit of Inside Mari, which is probably my favorite work of his atleast from what ive read, though its still not a great manga. Chi no Widachi was pretty good until it just kept going even after the actual story pretty much concluded.
I'm surprised you didn't finish FoE, but to each his own. I hear a lot of people complain about BotT's long-winded ending, which I can sympathize with, as I'd like it to come to a close now, as well, but I am curious as to how this final arc will clue up, and I think it adds a lot to the protag and his mother's dynamic. I've still to finish Inside Mari, but knowing it's your favourite motivates me a little more.
I don't mean any disrespect at all but your assessment of his characters comes off so childish and one sided when it comes to sex or gender. 1. Sex is a natural part of life and people just have it and it being depicted in a story is in no way negative, crass or childish. Even young teens have sex. . 2. Whenever it's a male character touching a female character and any sexual way, you make it out to be a negative and a mark against his character, but whenever a female or trans touches a male character sexually or sexual assaults male characters, you don't put a negative connotation on it or have nothing to say about it at all. So it comes off hypocritical. Avant-garde Yumico basically coerced and sexually assaulted that guy but you slide past that, but when mentioning the body swap in Your Name you criticize the guy for touching the boobs, even what that's a perfectly normal reaction to waking up with boobs. The way you speak feel like like a women feminist that doesn't believe in equality but actually believe in women supremacy and that women can't do any wrong. Lost any respect for you I might have had when you're overtly being sexist against male characters. You don't apply the same scrutiny to both sexes. Because if you swap the genders of all the characters when it comes to sexual situations I have a feeling that you're talking points will be much different.
I appreciate the feedback! I don't exactly remember what I said in this video or what I intended since it's been so long and I was talking on the fly, but I'll these points into consideration when discussing Oshimi moving forward.
...but it is? Yes, there is a major spoiler at the end that changes how we view the story in retrospect. More importantly, however, it presents itself as a body swap story to subvert that at the end, but the subversion only works on the assumption that it is in fact (up until that point) a body swap story. To call it anything else would risk the plot twist at the end.

Blood on the tracks ( I'm on volume five of that series and it's crazy it's really creepy what's going on in that one and it's just has all this tension and it keeps you on the edges you seeing what's going to happen between the mother and the son's relationship
Welcome back alice ( it's actually really dope I'm on volume of three right now I haven't started it yet but I enjoy that serious I think it's really interesting with the entire subject matter of you know transgender subject matter and really seeing how it affects how Alice came back originally she was a man than transitioned and she really doesn't really identify as the regular binary of male and female she just doesn't equate to that I'm seeing the reaction of everyone else around her how they are dealing with it is great writing)

Thank you for your kind words! I hope you end up finishing Inside Mari and loving it as much as I did. It has such a great twist at the end that absolutely hooked me. Blood on the Tracks was shaping up to be my favourite work of his, but without spoiling anything, it really overstays it's welcome. I think him publishing BotT and Alice at the same time started to take a toll on the quality of his work unfortunately, as the second half of Alice felt incomplete. Regardless, still one of my favourite mangaka! Looking forward to his next work.
Currently at chapter 104 of Blood on the Tracks and it’s definitely 100% my favorite manga ever no comparison. It literally changes my mood throughout the day depending on each chapter. Pretty disappointed though of how the story continued after book number 9. Any recommendation on mangas with the same effect on you? Just ordered all of Flowers of Evil.
You'll definitely like FOE if you love BOTT. If you want more psychological thrillers, I'd also suggest Goodnight Punpun or No Longer Human by Furuya

I do like his big 3, but Avant-Garde Yumeko is one of my favorites just because the perspective on the body is so unique. It's too bad it was never released in English. If you like Oshimi's work but want something a little more raunchy but mature-ish, check out Kazuto Okada's works.
I like the shaving one, too, but that story is way too short. I have no idea if the movie is any good.

I started with Inside Mari and Flowers of Evil. Then I've read Happiness and it was really good, but coming after these 2 it didn't entirely hit the right note. Starting Blood on the Tracks right now. No idea what to expect. BTW how did you like Inside Mari ending?
BOTT is a quick and easy read, and overall, its once of Oshimi's best works. Unfortunately, its ending (which is still ongoing) is realllly long winded, but otherwise, its my favourite next to FOE. I never finished Inside Mari, but once I do, I'll let you know. Is it a good ending?
@@mynameisdoofy I've read 1st chapter of BOTT when I realised it's ongoing. I will add it to my list and wait for it to be finished. I don't like to start ongoing mangas, because waiting for chapters is killing me and after some time I lose interest and drop it. And Mari? Ending wasn't something I expected. I had my suspicions, but it surprised me, in a good way. And in terms if it's happy? Well, it's complicated ;) Better see it yourself, but I think you won't be disappointed.

Ive read half of Aku no Hana (I didnt wanna read anymore of it), read Chi no Widachi til where it shouldve ended (around Chapter 85 or so) and read a bit of Inside Mari, which is probably my favorite work of his atleast from what ive read, though its still not a great manga. Chi no Widachi was pretty good until it just kept going even after the actual story pretty much concluded.
I'm surprised you didn't finish FoE, but to each his own. I hear a lot of people complain about BotT's long-winded ending, which I can sympathize with, as I'd like it to come to a close now, as well, but I am curious as to how this final arc will clue up, and I think it adds a lot to the protag and his mother's dynamic. I've still to finish Inside Mari, but knowing it's your favourite motivates me a little more.

I don't mean any disrespect at all but your assessment of his characters comes off so childish and one sided when it comes to sex or gender.
1. Sex is a natural part of life and people just have it and it being depicted in a story is in no way negative, crass or childish.
Even young teens have sex. .
2. Whenever it's a male character touching a female character and any sexual way, you make it out to be a negative and a mark against his character, but whenever a female or trans touches a male character sexually or sexual assaults male characters, you don't put a negative connotation on it or have nothing to say about it at all.
So it comes off hypocritical.
Avant-garde Yumico basically coerced and sexually assaulted that guy but you slide past that, but when mentioning the body swap in Your Name you criticize the guy for touching the boobs, even what that's a perfectly normal reaction to waking up with boobs.
The way you speak feel like like a women feminist that doesn't believe in equality but actually believe in women supremacy and that women can't do any wrong.
Lost any respect for you I might have had when you're overtly being sexist against male characters.
You don't apply the same scrutiny to both sexes.
Because if you swap the genders of all the characters when it comes to sexual situations I have a feeling that you're talking points will be much different.

...but it is? Yes, there is a major spoiler at the end that changes how we view the story in retrospect. More importantly, however, it presents itself as a body swap story to subvert that at the end, but the subversion only works on the assumption that it is in fact (up until that point) a body swap story. To call it anything else would risk the plot twist at the end.
