Was the 10 speed added later ? Its unusual to match a 2 spd diff to a 10 speed.

True, but 1 example springs to mind the D1000 Ford had the RT610&2speed diff👍

That's a perfect gearing set up for a Detroit single drive youve got nearly every grade covered and can do real real quick shift with a 2 sp diff.
