So true. Also during the video store scene it was so obvious that Billy was subtly trying to get Stu to back off but he was also enjoying how they were both toying with Randy. Some people may think the killers were so obvious and that’s exactly right, which is why it was still surprising that they chose to go with them because everyone thought it was TOO obvious. Plus once Billy was stabbed that just kind of gave the audience a relief and shock in the fact that it couldn’t have been him. The reveal whenever he turned around was just awesome. Skeet really pulled off the “evil” glare.
I think if he felt it necessary, he would have killed Stu to shut him up.

Jayne Karinova Yeah, but one red herring messed everything up. So at the end when they were revealed it came as a shock to people because they were right along, but got thrown off by one distraction, especially billy he was daring for most of the movie, but still decided to play along as if he was one of the main antagonists.
that was the point. This movie was satire.
And they made it obvious on purpose to have us say "No way, that would be predictable", and then they had the balls to do it anyways with a little twist thrown in.

There was never two killers before. We couldn't wrap our heads around it. Even when we "knew" Billy did it, something happened to say otherwise and suggest someone else.

1:28 look at Billy. He gives Stu a “What the fuck?” Look on his face. Like he’s saying, “Shut your goddamn mouth!” And watch him when he turns his head after Randy asks Stu if he stabbed someone. Like he’s saying in his head, “Shit Stu. Please don’t fuck it up.” And look at the way he says, “No one said you did.” He widened his eyes like he’s saying, “Shut the fuck up!!!!” Pretty obvious these two were the murderers.
Seeing Sidney so scared at the beginning of this first movie... Now look at the hero she became. That's a damn great evolution, Sid 😂

Slixter 3000 it’s kind of intentional though, like other horror films where a character seems certain to be the killer as all the signs point to him but then in the reveal it’s someone else completely, the first time you see this film you think it’s too obvious and that billy is a red herring and it will be someone we least suspect, but then the film flips it and he actually is the killer all along
Billy was predictable. But I think most of us can agree that Stu was the very unpredictable choice for the 2nd killer. I didn't see that coming at all. Never even could've pondered the idea that there could be 2 killers. I think Wes Craven let us think Billy was the killer so we could forget the idea that there could be someone else helping him. Which is where Stu squeezes in perfectly.

I always found it funny & ironic that Dewey has to let Sid know its serious and he has to be professional so no Dewey stuff but when he says "Its Deputy Riley today Sid" he uses the nickname he obviously always uses with her. Not saying he did anything wrong just was always like um..... lol. And I've always loved Billy's "Its called tact you fuckrag" line.

4 reasons he didn't make it big in hollywood
1) He's too deep for hollywood. Here is a guy who loves carpentry and russian literature. Not your average vacuous hollywood celeb.
2) He married too soon. You don't marry when you're an up and coming hollywood star. It destroys your teen fanbase, who are stupid enough to think they have a shot with you.
3) Not image conscious - the guy doesn't seem to care about what others think of him and does what he does. You need a carefully developed image if you're going to be a star.
4) Lastly and most importantly, poor choice of scripts after scream. He seems more interested in being an actor than a star, and experimented with some out-of-the-box movies which flopped miserably.

I personally would have give a bit of suspect to Stu, as he describes the acting of gutting someone so precisely and with such a sound of enjoynment in it. That probably was a clue on how demented and so possible as a maniac he could be, and shows perfectly even how Billy was the mind behind all of it. He clearly has a more ractional and subtle mind, so that he can do the phone calls, the games and many of the kills, as Stu can be a little to much enthusiastic and mad so he could mess up with everything. In this case, Bill's quote can be seen as an advise to not use those words towards Sidney, and be meant as "shut up, you'll screw everything" towards Stu, when you later find out they were the killers (and all sounds so obvious then)
Stu was shown to be an immature dude that wasn't grasping the seriousness of the situation. Of course we find out at the end that was because he was one of the killers, but it kept the audience guessing throughout the whole movie. The two idiots that get expelled for running in the hallways wearing the ghostface costumes help to shield Stu's behavior by showing us that many of the other students weren't taking the murders as seriously as they should have.

When you scrutinize Billy’s reactions throughout the scene it’s obvious that he’s trying not to laugh, even when he’s briefly scolding Randy and Stu. If you watch right after Randy makes the “slice and dice” comment Billy laughs briefly, then puts his head down, turns to the side and then fakes a serious expression after Syd becomes upset.
Oh yeah. I see it now. He clearly saw the amusement in the sick jokes but had to hide it.

On first viewing, Billy looks like he’s avoiding the topic because of the subject of murder and how it’ll trigger something in Sidney. On second viewing tho, we see he’s avoiding the topic because he doesn’t want to get caught. Now either Wes told them from the beginning that they’re the killers, or that’s just good acting.

I know some people have criticized Himbry for being creepy in this scene, and yes as principal he should've known better, but i think the reason he strokes Sidney's chin is to simply just be consoling towards her because he knew what memories the murders of Casey & Steve were bringing up for her. But yes he should've known better however i just think he was a buffon of a character that is all.

Re-watching this movie, you realize there were so many clues traceable back to Billy and Stu that you ask yourself how the hell you couldn't notice them the first time... but that's okay! This being the original film, we hadn't yet entertained the idea of having a second killer.

There's a suggestion that Billy and Stu are momentarily shocked out of their nihilism to the horror of their deeds by the humanity of Sidney's question. Given that Craven also made Last House on the Left, I think this film is aiming deeper than it may at first appear.
I hate when people say “I knew it was Billy and Stu!”. The movie kinda does a good job of throwing you around. Billy gets cleared as a suspect when after he’s arrested. Stu comes off as too dumb to be the killer(which makes sense now why Ghostface was clumsy as fuck)
