  • Join us on a journey of culture and cuisine as we experience Iftar for the first time in Kuala Lumpur with our local Malaysian friend. Ramadan is a special time of year where the Muslim community fasts from sunrise to sunset and Iftar is the meal that breaks the fast each day. We've always been curious about this traditional meal and the unique flavours that come with it and our trip to KL gave us the perfect opportunity to finally try it out. In this video we'll take you along with us as we explore and sample various dishes such as the classic and delicious Nasi Lemak, Kueh, Roti Jala with Kare Ayam (Chicken Curry), Pengat Pisang, Soto Ayam and many more. Along the way we'll share our thoughts and first impressions of the food and the Iftar experience as a whole as we break the fast at this HUGE Ramadan buffet. Come along with us and let's discover the magic of Iftar with the locals in Kuala Lumpur.

The yellow cake you eat is made from tapioca, that's why it is quite sticky because of its starch. The cucur kodok is made by crushing ripen bananas. The seri muka is made from glutinous rice and pandan custard. I am really glad you enjoyed the food. Do try more afterwards.

that fish dish you see is not a "curry" but a type of stew. Most real traditional Malay dish are not curry but a kind of stew that we call Gulai. But because when the British came here they were used to Indian curry and they saw that the Malay dish have some similarity or look like Indian curry so they end up calling all dish like that as curry when in reality the way we cook it and the spices that we used are totally different...our "curry" or stew are more a like to Thai style dish with a lot more coconut cream and fresh spices instead of dried spices like in Indian curry. So in Malaysia we tend to differentiate between Indian style curry and Malays style curry.

Actually, we also eat/dip Roti Jala(Net/Lace Roti) with Durian Gravy(Durian flesh, coconut palm sugar, coconut milk & pandan leaf), besides curry gravy... And the small cute lime is called Calamansi(Kasturi in Malay) Lime(Limau)... Laksa Johor use Spaghetti as it noodles & gravy similar to Malay style curry with fish flesh...

Hi again guys... Now that Ramadan is nearing its end, you should head to KL and attend the Hari Raya open house at the palace. It'll be the grand finale with a bang. There'll be a lot of people but hopefully, the whole experience out of it will be a thing to remember. To avoid long queues, go at around 3pm. If you want to be more adventurous, go to Kampung Baru on raya day and just drop by any house that you see has some people in it and wish them "Selamat Hari Raya". 99.99% you will be invited in. The open house concept that we subscribed to will almost guarantee that. Have fun!
