MAKE SURE TO PRE MIX THE RESIN! I just casted my first grips last night, and forgot to premix before pouring. Customer service was very helpful in helping me find out why my grips weren't stiff. Great company, great product, great customer service!
Also in response to FoulPet, I think they meant "custom" as far as the material used and color options. But, I do see your point, So, If, one where so inclined, someone could sculpt their own grips is a product called "Monster Clay" (using existing grips as a template), The ideas are endless to the cool visuals that are possible. Smooth-On also has a molding compound that can stand up to higher temperature materials like molten pewter and aluminum. Again, awesome stuff!
I want to do something similar but I'm looking for a clear grip to make "sweetheart" grips, will this process work with something like epoxocast 690 or crystal clear 202? Or is there another suggested method?
This is super helpful, because I want a different grip but can't find one I'm in love with, I was just curious, when you are glueing the original grips down to make the mold, are you able to get them off and use them again once the mold is made?
The soft mold portion of this video is very helpful. I would like to make a medium-soft rubber-ish wrap-around grip for a pistol that primarily enlarges the whole grip area to fit my mongo hand and fingers. The 380 looks to be a harder material than I want. Do you have a suggested material? Do you happen to have a video on making a mold that wraps around a part, rather than making the mold in a "pan" of sorts?
Hi there! This is a good question for our tech support team, can you send them a ticket here? www.smooth-on.com/support/ticket/add/agree/ Thanks for watching!
Will everything in this video work if i wanted to make my own AR 15 rifle handguards? wonder if the cast guards will get soft and wobbly with heat tbh.
Smooth Cast 380 has a heat distortion temperature of around 150F. Our TASK 8 resin has a higher heat distortion temperature of around 200F, 265F if it is post cured.

Thank you for watching. You can make a cold metal castings by using Smooth-Cast™ 325 and our Real Metal Powders seen here - www.smooth-on.com/tutorials/metal-cold-casting-smooth-cast-325-resin/
I don't get it...Fine if you want to change the color of your grips or inlays, but how in the hell is this a custom grip. It's an exact copy of factory grips with the option to make em purty.
You're creativity makes a custom grip. Just make one like he did then take it to a belt sander, make it smooth, then get yourself a woodburning kit, and an engraving kit and go nutz, the rest is up to you.
The reason this is funny to me is because you expect metal or Led Zeppelin or Black Sabbath or something for modding guns even some 90s punk but this music is just generic DIY music

this is exactly what I've been looking to do. thank you much
Great! Good luck with your project!
is there a translucent resin that can be used for this application with the same strength?
Yes, our TASK 9 is a strong translucent resin.
Looks neat but I would want to make rubber grips for old guns that have no rubber grip options. Is there some sort of rubber compound?
Sure, you could try something from our SIMPACT series of rubbers - www.smooth-on.com/product-line/simpact-series/
that was gonna be my question, too. colt trooper MKIII, want something to handle the 357 magnum.

EpoxAcast 690 would be a great choice for this.
@@smoothon Amazing! Is the mold material used here still acceptable?
@@gopatriots1991 absolutely.
This is exactly what i was thinking! Hope your grips came out well.
put a thin coat of silicon-rubber before pouring the epoxi, makes a great transparent kind of rubber grip!
This is super helpful, because I want a different grip but can't find one I'm in love with, I was just curious, when you are glueing the original grips down to make the mold, are you able to get them off and use them again once the mold is made?
Yes, as long as a removable adhesive is used such as hot glue

Am I allowed to do this and sell the grips? How does that work with copyright?
You would need to create your own design to duplicate and sell grips.
How to make makarov grip? And what color I can use

How can I make custom metal ones?
Thank you for watching. You can make a cold metal castings by using Smooth-Cast™ 325 and our Real Metal Powders seen here - www.smooth-on.com/tutorials/metal-cold-casting-smooth-cast-325-resin/
2 part mold is better, you have back & front of grips complete. No trimming needed.
lego and plasticine for the mold box, reusable.
Thanks for your input!
You have to thoroughly wash or seal the grips, otherwise sulfur-containing gunpowder residue will ruin the mold with cure inhibition.

Add coins to the mold...give it a snazy look
Great idea!

more like a copy than a custom
