Dust isn't pieces of the moon that fell when the god of darkness flew through it? I thought that was why it had to be mined, because people weren't generally deep underground, but the comets might? And the gods made Dust to not work in space so they couldn't travel to the moon to get more dust?

Humans had magic back then, they could manipulate different elements and in my mind had different elemental affinities as well, some preferring fire and others wind or ice. If they were the remnants of the moon then maybe it would be just one type of dust, and not the full variety we have.

All these folks saying that Dust is the fossilised remains of the original humans that the Gods wiped out have probably got it backwards. During Salem's opening narration of the first episode she mentions that Humanity was born from dust and named the 'energy propellant' because of their origin. To me this implies that the second race of humanity came from the dust of the first and what they named Dust is something else. So I'm sticking with the theory that 'Dust' was created and scattered over the world by the God of Darkness smashing his way through the moon. When the humans attacked the gods with magic the Dark bro called it his gift used against him so it makes sense that the 'new' form of magic (Dust) is his power as well (fused into the orbital rock he smashed up).
I know some people complained about these being like homework, but I never minded. In the first 3 volumes at least, we learned exactly as much information as we needed to about the world, and these were just interesting side videos meant to expand on the broader elements of it. A semblance is an ability that is intimately tied to a person's soul and can usually only do one thing with a few rare exceptions. While magic was a gift to the first group of humanity by the Dark Brother during the age of the gods. They haven't really explained all of what magic can do, but we do know a few things, 1: it can be used to give people the ability to turn into animals (See Qrow & Raven), 2: By sacrificing some of your own it can be gifted to others (See The 4 Maidens). We also know that modern humanity can't use it anymore because the Dark Brother took his gift of magic back.
Now this is an interesting premise for a world. Imagine if RWBY didnt have semblances or magic, but simply exploring the many ways humans can use dust to replace all that.

My personal theory, is that dust is the Crystallized “Remnants” of Humanity’s magic. After humanities first extinction at the hands of the gods, it seeped into the ground, eventually creating the dust crystals we know.

dust manipulation basics: You have 2 ways to use it, either through a machine or using your own will. Use a machine and you'll be stuck using the bare basics of the dust. Use your will and if you're skilled enough you can basically become the avatar but with more elements.

What is the difference between Magic and a semblance, also did they ever explain why Roman needed to steal the dust what part of the plan was that
Roman stealing the dust back in volume 1 was to drive the price of dust through the roof, put the city on edge, and arm the White Fang for their operations at the end of volumes 2 & 3.

A semblance is an ability that is intimately tied to a person's soul and can usually only do one thing with a few rare exceptions. While magic was a gift to the first group of humanity by the Dark Brother during the age of the gods. They haven't really explained all of what magic can do, but we do know a few things, 1: it can be used to give people the ability to turn into animals (See Qrow & Raven), 2: By sacrificing some of your own it can be gifted to others (See The 4 Maidens). We also know that modern humanity can't use it anymore because the Dark Brother took his gift of magic back.

I believe Dust is related to the reason why the moon is shattered. It may even be moon dust that reacted to the environment of Remnant or matter found there.
I was expect this to be a revamp of the episode, or at least a visual update to it. Why reupload this so many years later when there is 0 change to it?
As a geologist with a Masters Degree in mineral resources, I fully support the theory that dust is a fossil combustible like oil or carbon, only instead of ancient plancton or forests it's made of the remains of the first version of humanity after they underwent a heavy metamorphism xDDDDDD

Dust is the remains from the pre-modern generation of humans who had magic and were wiped out. The opening of the show even has "something something Its fitting it's called dust, because that's what humans end up as"
I'm pretty sure it's a Fullmetal Alchemist situation they wanted to imply, but I think when they reveal it, it will fall flat, because it's not a question our charecters have been asking.
