Another advantage of portable power supplies is out on my acreage. It is cheaper to carry a battery around than run power to remote locations on the property. I have a Jackery and a Titan system. Well worth it.

We too have just the small Jackery 240 watt for being handy when away for the day on picnics, camping etc but when at home we use it to charge small items during the day, like laptops, battery mower batteries, watches etc etc. Sunny days I’ll use a solar panel, not a Jackery one just a cheap 60watt folding one from Amazon. We also have a very low cost night time electric tariff for 5 hrs at 7.5p per KWh instead of the daytime tariff of 32p, so when it needs topped up without Sun we use that tariff time and use it during the day for mentioned above.
Solar panels do degrade as you mentioned but after 10 years only about 3-5%. 20yesrs maybe 10% so a 300w panel will still be a good buy if good enough!!
Farm panels last better actually because they’ve always had good all round ventilation and don’t overheat, unlike van roof or house roof panels

I only have a Jackery 240... but we sue it to charge phones, fitbits, ad use it to charge our anker power packs so even those small savings on using household electricity are worth it.

I now also power a part of my house from my 100ah battery from my van, which is charged by a 200w solar panel. appliances, such as computer, lighting, and hi-fi installation, only the heavy consumers are still connected to the network, such as boiler, electric cooker, and fridge

Hi Mel. I’m picking up my first ever camper tomorrow (it’s on finance and the interest would make you weep so I won’t go there). I’m an online teacher in full time employment. I have bought a bluetti (600 W) - when at home I can run all my office equipment and therefore save money, and reduce my carbon footprint. In time I will invest in the bigger one (may need a mortgage for that one though). Lol

Thankyou mell. I have 700 watt parked on a steep drive facing the sun in perfect conditions. I've been pondering how I can share all that energy way before the massive price increases. Turns out its a very simple process. I just need a jackery or similar battery type device. Jeez sometimes the most obvious solution isn't obvious. Cheers mate

But you still need to re-charge it ! Plug it into your house mains then or charge it from your non-existant solar panels on the roof of the house ? I guess it's own mini solar panels will look lovely in your garden if they are not nicked.

I have a second hand solar panel 250watt ex solar farm, paid 60 quid for it 4 years ago has been ideal. Charges my battery up very quickly, even on cloudy days it works well . I never have to hook up. And I never even use my split charge relay anymore.

Hi Mel. I have just purchased a Bluetti AC 200 max. I plan to convert a van into a camper van in May next year when I retire and travel around Europe with my wife. I intend to power the van with the Bluetti so it will be interesting to see how you get on. I thought it was a good idea to get the Bluetti now so that I am ready for the winter power cuts that have been predicted. Keep up the good work!!

I have an ecoflow delta 2 and do exactly this - it comes out of the van when not in use and I use it to charge my mobility scooter and wheelchair at home, to help cut my electricity bill! I bought it to charge the scooter on the road so figured it may as well do the same job at home and help pay for itself. 😅

Hi Mel , we have Three power banks ones a Jackery 1000 , one is a 1000 Bluetti and a little Jackery 100 , We always take them in the house when not out in the van because ever since having a smart meter fitted its surprising how much things cost to charge also they are a God send when we have power cuts and are great for the fridge and freezer also boiling the kettle for a hot drink because living where we live we've no gas only Electric and live a mile and a half to the nearest village .

Hey Mel, it is a very good idea to take the Solar Generator into the house - great for power cuts! The Goal Zero Yeti was one of the original Solar Generators and they now sell a Home Backup Kit that allows you to connect your Goal Zero Yeti into your house Wiring (needs and electrician) - its a US kit, but also includes extra batteries too. I think Bluetti also do a similar kit now - but not the bit that connects it into your house wiring, just the extra battery packs to increase your storage capacity. If you live in an area that loses power then a solar generator - or even a simple battery box and inverter are great for those emergencies. I wish I'd had one to use during the Christchurch Earthquakes of 2011 as we lost power for over 10 days, then it was intermittent after for months due to all the damage the earthquake caused to the electricity network. A must for your emergency kit if you live in the hurricane belt or a remote area.
I wonder if its 'Blue-T' as Bluetti sounds too much like Yeti and I think the Goal Zero Yeti came first (over 10 years ago) 🙃
I actually have my portable induction hob in the kitchen in my house, I use it every day to cook as its way faster and better than the ceramic hob on the oven! I ended up buying a second that lives in the campervan, but I bring that into the house when I need to cook 2 things at once.

Hey Mel - great video. We've a new van being delivered in a couple of weeks and I bought the Ecoflow Delta 2 instead of changing the batteries in the van to Lithium/inverter. The thinking is we'll get the extra battery ooomfh that we can then take off the van and into the home when not in use in the van. I'm going to put the 220 panel on the garage roof to get Free (well after buying the kit anyway... ) charging and it will power the garage and shed and the van on hookup at home. I think we'll change the one battery to lithium in the van eventually but no inverter. Also, when going the van is running I think the USBs in the back don't work so all the gadgets will charge in transit. Probably have this all wrong but that's the plan...

We too have recently purchased a Ecoflow Delta. Next year our travels in the van will be far and wide so have been purchasing items that can be used in conjunction with the Delta, such as an induction hob and mini George Forman etc. This year I also brought it indoors and used it which seems fairly logical to me…. Great content by the way, and I love watching all your vlogs which are always informative 👍🍻

Question time for me !!! Induction Hob...boiling a kettle...how many amps / watss etc does it use to do that from your battery? Also, how long would that power take to be put back into your battery via an average UK day on solar? Or do you need to drive the van or connect to shore power to periodically top up your van?

Mel, the bluetti D050s is great for double charging, but can you plug a DC to DC charger straight into the solar panel port (without the D050s) of the AC200, I can't find this answer anywhere on TH-cam. Even bluetti don't advertise you can alternator charge? I'm wondering why I need to buy the D050s to alternator charge 🤔

    • @BigVanSmallWorld

@@BigVanSmallWorld the D050s is the thing you connected your split charge relay/alternator into to charge the bluetti a video or two ago... what I want to know, can you use a DC to DC to alternator charge directly into the bluetti without that £150 bluetti accessory.. Basically I've got a victron 12/12 30 amp DC to DC charger but bluetti are telling me I can't connect it to the solar port. I can't see why not. I don't have solar, Thanks Mel.
