    After a 15 day cruise, I disembarked in Los Angeles, and while at the airport I went to a cafe where I proceeded to grab a macaron and eat it at the counter without paying. Thankfully, the strange looks prompted me to pay for my snack after the fact. Terribly embarrassing.

      Why were you embarrassed? It is an honest mistake. You could have asked "is this complimentary?" or if you did not speak English, just point at it. The staff would understand. But I would not be terribly embarrassed.

    I had some friends that went on a shore excursion and missed the boat. Since they had barely missed the ship, the ship was stopped and they were shuttled out to the ship by a pilot boat. My friend said that for the rest of the cruise people were pointing at them saying, "Look, there's that family that missed the boat".

      They are very lucky - not all ports will send you out to the ship like that - once the gangplank is up, that's it! Your passport, if you left it on the ship, will be left with the authorities at the port.

    My friend John almost made THE worst cruise mistake imaginable on his first cruise: he had packed his passport in his checked luggage. The porters were about to take our luggage away when I spontaneously asked "John, do you have your passport?"
    "Yes, it's in that suitcase over there--"
    "STOP!"
    Disaster was averted. Barely.

    I was a radio officer on cargo ships in a previous life and on one occasion we had a first trip junior engineer come aboard with his mum and dad, siblings, friends etc ... He was told to press deck 4 in the lift, turn the corner and his cabin was there ... Well, the first door they saw as they turned the corner was one of the doors to the owners suite, which was a very plush almost palatial space, thick white wool carpets, marble pillars, mirrors, expensive paintings etc and the door was open so he thought, this must be it, so in they all went, their jaws just dropped at what they found. Apparently his folks were saying things like, "well done son, you've done well for yourself" .. meanwhile his real cabin was a shoe box on the other side of the passage, there was some disappointment when they were evicted :-) Nice videos by the way, I enjoy them, thanks.

    This didn’t happen on a cruise but still a bed faux pas.
    I once worked with a guy who always took his family on self catering holidays, but one year he decided to book hotel accommodation. His wife and two young teenage boys were not amused that the hotel had crammed them into one bedroom with two single beds and two camp beds. The hotel apparently was booked solid so they spent a fortnight akin to caged animals ready to rip the head off each other and with the receptionist insisting they got what they had booked. Anyway, when he got back to work he complained profusely about not getting the two bedrooms he had booked online and we duly sympathised until at last he said “When I book a twin room I expect to get exactly that, I expect two rooms”. Needless to say when he exited the office we were in stitches.

      I almost made the same mistake once, because in my native language what translates to a "double room" or "twin room" is meant for just two people, much like a "single room" is meant for a single person. Showing up to the first hotel on our trip through Canada we were kind of surprised to be given a room with 4 single beds, rather than a single double bed.

    We took our first cruise 3 years ago. I was on vacation so I had packed a lot of t-shirts and shorts. No one had told me that people dress fairly nice for dinner even on non-formal nights. So here I went to dinner in my t-shirt and shorts. I was by far the most underdressed person in there. It was embarrassing!!!

    • @lokicooper4690
      @lokicooper4690 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I think that depends on the cruise itself, or cruiseline. I’ve been on two cruises, both Royal Caribbean, and people dressed like that most of the time. There was a Saturday night dinner that was more formal in the main dining room, but you could eat at the buffet if you didn’t want to dress up. We normally ate dinner at the main dining room, and wore shorts, except on the Saturday. The specialty restaurants may also have a dress code (we ate at one on the Saturday, so we had an outfit for it). It never hurts to bring one nice-ish outfit, just in case.
      Personally, I don’t like dressing up, so I only bring one outfit (or a dressy top that will dress up a pair of black pants), and that seems to work for most of my trips (not just the cruises).
      Just don’t wear flip-flops. Lol!

    A common mistake that I have seen on every cruise that I've been on is that a few passengers spend time in the sun on the deck when it eventually becomes warm enough to do so. It feels so good after leaving a cold embarkation port and they think the sun is weak enough to not require any sun protection initially. Often they fall asleep on a lounge chair because it feels so good For the next 3 days, however, they are in pain and look like red lobsters.

    • @stephanguitar9778
      @stephanguitar9778 2 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      That's normal British behaviour. 😎 can be worse on a ship on account of having a bit of a breeze so you don't notice the sun. Ive still got sun damage from a sea voyage 50 years ago, transiting the suez canal 40C heat but in the pool all day.

      When I was a kid, I spent a day at the beach in Florida. As a lily-white Canuck, I received 2nd degree burns all over my body. Learned then that the sun is dangerous. ALWAYS wear sunscreen, especially if you’re as white as I am. Even on cloudy days.

    About 7 years ago, I went on a Royal Caribbean cruise. One of the stops was Jamaica. We had a shore excursion that included a rum tasting at a rum distillery. One of the groups on the excursion was a family of 5 from England-- mom, dad, 2 sons, and grandfather (rather young, late 50s, early 60s). The grandfather had a bit too much rum at the tasting. The next time I saw him was the same day on the pool deck. He was walking around with an ice cream cone in hand. Next thing I know, he's in the pool with a soggy ice cream cone that's falling apart and floating away 😂 let me tell you, the secondhand embarrassment I felt for this poor family pulling out their drunk relative from the pool, all while he's screaming about his ice cream cone floating away from him 😂😂😂

    In the embarkation area for our first ever cruise we saw a short line for 'Balcony Staterooms' and a longer line for all others. We assumed that a stateroom must be something grandiose for the wealthy as we only booked a balcony cabin and joined the longer line. Hi Emma; Teresa from CT. here. I just thought you might like to know this little bit. I am Catholic, and just a couple of weeks ago; while at Sunday Mass; the deacon used "cruising" as part of the homily except that they started with talking about how a church chipped in to pay for this "poor" family's trip to America; they bought the family one way tickets... The family; not knowing any better about what was available on the ship; bought their own food; what they could afford; things like bread and butter; cheese and maybe some deli meats thinking they would have to ration it through the cruise, and they stayed quite a few days in their cabin thinking that was all that came with it...One day the daughter decided to try and explore a little, but was nervous thinking she would get caught and be in trouble. As she came to the main dining room, the purser did see her and immediately brought her to the captain. When the captain asked her why she and her family were not eating in the dining room; the girl replied with tears in her eyes; "We could never afford such fine and fancy dining." The captain smiled warmly and replied; "Dear Girl; it is included in the price!"

I could hear her swiping the card unsuccessfully so eventually I can get out the shower dripping wet. I thought blow the towels I am getting back in and opened the door slightly so she could push in and realise what a nuisance she was. For the rest, it is fairly common for them to set it up wrong so this video is good advice! Also a friend slept on the pull-out couch and the mattress was terrible but even worse, the pullout mechanism was sharp and very easy to injure yourself on as you get in and out. The steward brought an eggshell mattress topper that made the bed comfortable and this friend jammed pillows around the mechanism.

    Years ago my grandparents went on a Costa cruise, when they came back they told me that they thought all restaurents except the buffet would cost lots of extra money so they only went to buffet for the whole cruise. It was their first and only cruise so far. I have been on Mariner of the Seas and Spectrum of the Seas. When I heared that, I just couldnt stop laughing.

    I've been on a music charter cruise ("the largest music cruise at sea," with 60 bands on a Royal Caribbean Freedom-class ship) six times, and EVERY year there's always a few people who say "What?! The 'fancy' restaurant was free?! I thought you had to pay for that! I just went to the buffet!"
    It's especially sad because there are surprisingly few free/included dining options for a ship that size to begin with.....

    When my wife and I went on our first cruise in the early 2000's, all of the food was included. I remember there was a sushi bar on our first cruise that was totally free. Now the buffet, the main dinning room, and maybe a couple of other restaurants are the only ones that do not require an additional free. Some ships might even have areas that you have to pay extra to gain access to. Because I remember when all inclusive really meant all inclusive, these extra fees really annoy me.

    My wife and I, along with a female friend shared a balcony stateroom on a Princess cruise to Alaska. The two doubles were put together and we had the sleeper couch. We had agreed that we would take turns on the couch, so asked the steward to separate them. We asked him three times and he didn't do it. When we confronted him, he showed us his clipboard saying we were a married couple and our beds should be together. We actually had to go down to Customer Service to have him separate the beds.

    • @lokicooper4690
      @lokicooper4690 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Interesting. I wonder if he would have got in trouble if the room was different to what was on the clipboard. I mean, if the people staying in the room ASK to have the beds separated, it shouldn’t be a hassle to have it done.
      What cruise line was this, if you don’t mind telling me?

    When looking at Motels, I always look at the fine print about beds. I'm a big guy so bed size is critical. I've noticed many motels have convertible beds in rooms which I guess is about creating options for them when booking guests. But not everybody knows about that it seems.

    Oh Emma, you reminded me of something I'd long forgotten! My then-best friend and her husband cruised on their honeymoon. It wasn't her first cruise, but when they came back, she said 'our room had twin beds and the reservation even stated it was our honeymoon!'
    Completely forgot about that one!
    My husband and I do a music cruise charter every year, and one year, because we're barely in the room, we opted to share our room with two friends. They got the pullman beds (really cool), and we asked for our bed to be split into twins so the others weren't uncomfortable with us sharing and being couple-y. One of our cabin mates was surprised that the king beds were really two twin beds put together!

    I did my first cruise on QE 2 across the Atlantique. We go an upgrade to the second best restaurant level. So we got used to get the menue and pick everything we just liked. After arriving in the USA we took a trip on AMTRAK in a sleeper. That included also all meals. So we sat down at breakfast the first morning and started to have at the menue. The steward needed to tell us that we could have only certain combination of items but not ALL!

    Food included is one of the best things onboard. Just relaxing on a sea day in the solarium reading a book and just casual grabbing a slice of pizza. I spend a lot of time in Royal Caribbean ships solariums. I usually like to add a soda package so I can just walk up to any bar and get a refill.

    Reminded me of the first cruise I went on 3 years ago. I was in the line for the body boarding flow rider and there was a guy trying to hold on to his shorts as they were getting lower and lower, suffice to say everyone in the line doubled checked their own shorts were tight! Following year a lady on the stand up one, came running down to the sports team to tie her bikini top back up and grab a t-shirt for her second go, lesson learnt.

    The buffet is strange too…you can have as much as you want and of what you want…
    We’re pretty good and try to stick to 3 meals a day with a afternoon or early morning snack…( after the dinner/ show/ cocktails) but mid week we have. “Food day”. We eat what we want when we want…I definitely go to the treadmill the day before and after…but it’s odd..eating on ship…but oh so good lol

    Love your channel: I like all your British-ism outtakes , reminds me when I vacationed at St. Petersburg Florida 25+ years ago. The resort then was mostly full of Brits so we picked up many new words. During those days they came by the plane load.
    My embarrassing moment: My first trip to specialty dinning with my wife, table for two, candle light, full view of many guest. We were served water and I turned to my love to make a toast and my hand dropped the glass of water because of the condensation on the water glass...the table was soaked

    There are cruises that certain restaurants or amenities are not included in your ticket, and you do have to pay for them separately, though often the charge is just tallied at the end of the cruise, like being at a hotel & adding the meal to your room... But it is all too easy to be shocked if you don't read the details on what is and is not included!

    you could wear a “shorty” wet suit in the flowrider. it’ll not only insulate you from the cold, it is also impossible for it to fly off. LOL. the difference between a “shorty” wet suit and the regular one is that the sleeves reach upto below the armpit like a t-shirt and the leg area reaches only above the knee. so it’s lightweight and easy to pack. it’s a 1 piece suit with either a zipper in the back or front zioper that opens sideways, so it’ll definitely stick on your body no matter how strong the wave is. besides, you’ll look sharp like a professional -unlike the t-shirt and shorts look. you could buy a shorty wet suit in Decathlon, very reasonably priced…

    I went on a cruise on Princess and met a women at afternoon tea who had been eating in the buffet because she did know she could eat in the dining room. She was having a horrible time. I guess she didn’t do her research. A few of us at the table tried to help her out. I felt bad for the lady. I went once on a carnival cruise with some teachers and one brought all her own towels. It was a bit bizarre. She also was upset that she didn’t meet a guy. Very sad! Needless to say I had a great time.
