      Great video @a long, long time ago, thank you for the local insight (from your neighbours in Bournemouth)! Here are a few discrepancies between your narration and subtitles:
      @2:36 you say the soldiers break into St Michael's, but the subtitles say, 'brake'
      @6:52 you are speaking about the (correct) date of the Titanic, but the subtitles say 1812.
      Thank you again for your videos. I am a History teacher, looking to help my students revise for their Edexcel exams; hence, I was pleased to find your channel! :)

      I know that in the North East of the US towns will have history books filled with old pictures and generalized histories of the town and certain families who lived in it. If you could find out if your town has history books than that'd be a good place to start

      Southampton's history is reasonably well documented and I was able to find some stuff online. Some of the sources contradicted one another slightly, but because Project Homecoming had a deadline, I had to leave that kind of stuff out - there wasn't time to work out which source was right etc. There was a website made by a local man about the city's history, which was really helpful, although it looked like it was ripped straight out of 2001!

  • @kapasvonkapas

    Most interesting! The walls of a city are truly the record of its history, with all the scars of time, use and war carved on them. Its a pity many such sites were damaged in the 19th century or even destroyed just because people could not see their historical value. This is true for my city as well.

    • @Alonglongtimeago
      @Alonglongtimeago  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This was a very interesting video, one can feel you are proud of your city. Southampton has a lot of history, but it also looks quite modern in places. This is particularly interesting to me because I am thinking of moving there if I can. I went there once and have always had a good impression of Southampton ever since, the people I met there were very helpful and friendly. So, if I am lucky maybe I will be living there soon. Thank you for this interesting video and very good presentation. It really was well done.

    Great video and really well put together, well done! My only question was about this settlement on the river Test you speak of. Surely this would be Hamtun itself? It does lay between the Itchen and the Test. I have never heard of any other place of size or importance apart from Saxon era Hamwic at present day St. Mary's and Viking era Olufstun which became Woolston. Both of these were on either bank of the Itchen. What are your thoughts? Cheers. Brendan.

    By the way the most recent additions to its defences have been a shopping center and its expansion? :-D

    • @Alonglongtimeago
      @Alonglongtimeago  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Pleased you appreciate Soton's superiority over Pompey! :D
      The expansion means that when enemies come over from Portsmouth, they get caught in the outskirts and get lost so they never make it to the city centre. For those enemies that do make it, the shopping centre provides as a distraction, so that they end up at build-a-bear rather than attacking the locals. Maybe I should have made that clearer in the video! :D
