Remember thinking this was the end of Liverpool. I'd never seen a team in a final look more clinical and dynamic than them. Cantona was patently superior. What on earth possessed Leeds to sell him to United. Years later Liverpool had the chance to sign Zidane. It wasn't to be until Klopp arrived.
Howard Wilkinson won the league and was obviously a good manager - but it is indefensible that he sold Cantona to their biggest rivals later this season. What the hell was he thinking?? The guy was obviously a brilliant player anyway - but to sell him to their arch rivals, who were already improving rapidly and going for the league title. Just sell him to anybody but them.
@@boomshanka2008 Yeah I heard the rumours. Also that Cantona was becoming a problem in the dressing room anyway because he didn't like the direct Leeds style - but like I said, they should have just sold him to anyone except United.
Souness took a team who finished runners up in 90/91 and broke up that team that summer for some reason. I’m a United fan and I’m glad they did but still can’t work out why they did
And that was the last time that season that Leeds won away from home. They and Gillingham were the only 2 teams in the 4 divisions not to win an away game.
Gordon Strachan scores one of the "best" own goals at Wembley. Interesting to note also that Graeme Souness isn't wearing a suit like most other managers do when they lead their team out onto the pitch.
A few months later wilkinson sold cantona who was then top scorer for leeds to mid-table man utd.......................................and the rest is history. Wilkinson fluked the title at leeds. He got lucky with seasoned pro's having a glorious season.

I'm guessing that you've no idea what it is like to really support a side. After 41 years (as a season ticket holder) of watching my team I'll agree with you on 1 thing - the hubcap stealers were a poor side... Yes you won the European runners-up league again this year but hollow champions...? Fuck off - we won that league by 4 points with a game top spare... If you need a wake up call check Yeboah's goal against Everton's reserve side in 1995... Love to read those comments about the scouse scum's fantastic support - lets see you after 16 consecutive divisions in league 1 / championship and lets see how many of the ("I can't get a ticket for Madrid" boys) want a ticket for Burton away... And dont forget twat - we've been champions of England more recently than you...
@@zzzaaa0990 Like the always bitter comment - absolutely - and proud of it. The rest of the football world hates us, why would we be anything else...? Prove I'm a season ticket holder...? Bought my first one in the 1979-80 season (cost me £19.50 as a junior). Longest run without missing any game (home or away) was just under 4 years (1981 - 85), and we spent most of that time in division 2 as well... (A collapsed lung ended the unbroken run of matches...). I'm more interested in your credentials as a fan of the hubcap stealers: how many games do you do each season? (getting a sky sports package doesn't count twat). My money's on you being a (mouthy) armchair fan, if that's the case then fuck off - my definition of a SUPPORTER is someone who SUPPORTS their team. By the way, please don't refer to me as dude, you condescending cunt (again - look up the big word in a dictionary), it will give you a break from watching the "mighty reds" on your latest European (via TV) venture. Its because of wankers like you that I became a closet Man City fan this season - love the fact that you got more points last season than in your previous 10 seasons put together and yet still didn't become champions...! Fucking brilliant! As a realist I fully expect Leeds to fuck up next year (and probably get relegated), but in the (very) unlikely event that we get promoted then please break your habit of a lifetime and turn up for a game (the hubcap stealers post code is L4 0TH - put it in your SATNAV). You may beat us, but you'll see REAL support like you've never seen before. Now fuck off back to your sky sports TV package and let a real fan plan for his next game.. Marching On Together...
My first and lest ever trip to the old Wembley. Classic Charity Shield, despite my team losing.
Same
I was there. First and only time at Wembley Stadium. Had a wee scouser screaming in my face every time Liverpool scored, but I had the last laugh.
I went to that game and didn't realise how well Liverpool played. The rest of the season was mediocre in my opinion
Now that's a blast from the past.
What was Strachan doing? Put your foot on it. Cantona's second was class!

The funny thing about this, is that he was initially offered to Liverpool but souness declined the offer. Then he joined Leeds
Just before the Premier League started.
Cantona manchester united legend!!!
Cantona Leeds United legend.

1-2 Tony Dorigo (43 min)

2-3 Éric Cantona (77 min)

Leeds United?
The only hatrick in a charity shield match to my knowledge.

They won an FA cup replay away at Charlton.
Why did Liverpool persist with
Bruce Grobbelaar in goal, he was clearly pass his best by then

A complete lack of respect if you ask me. But then again that was Souness all over, a fking idiot
One of my favourite own goals. Although... the shot is on target so by today's rules not an o.g.?!
