    I redecked my Carolina Skiff last year. I wouldnt have had the confidence to start without your videos. thanks bro

    Skiff owner as well. Fiberglass doesn't really rot. What your seeing is lazy manufacturing. Every channel could be filled with water and the original foam and the boat will still float. That was the point. Really its just the weight and the chance of the soaked foam freezing being the issue. Drill then dry once a season and these boats will probably be eternal. Yours turned out very nice though. Awesome job.

    Getting ready to tackle this as well

    Props to you for doing all that work. I would've sold it for cheap and bought another one lol

      I definitely debated doing that. My main reason was I would probably end up with another Carolina Skiff. Then I may have the same issue just with another boat. Thank you for watching!

    I wonder what putting in some "Heat source" of some kind under the hull and drive that moisture out.
    High enough to drive the water to vaporize over time but not enough to do any damage.

    I do the same with stuff, just tinker, and for the most part things turn out nice. Great videos. New sub and two thumbs up .

    10+ years ago, I was the first person to post on skiff forums about drilling the transom to add garboard drains and using a electrician bit welded onto a steel rod, it laid on the hull and I drilled through every stringer from the stern to in front of the console. I removed every screw from the deck and sealed everything the way it should have been done at the factory. I lifted the bow and both drains dripped water for over a month. Even after a trip I would remove drains and raise the bow. After 8-10 months the foam was bone dry. I would remove the drain plugs about every 6 months and it was always dry.

      That seems to do the trick. A charter captain I went with had a 24’ Carolina Skiff. He drilled it out and drained it every winter. I just wish I would have heard about it 5 or 10 years ago! I wouldn’t be in the situation I am now. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    I'm cutting all of the bulkheads out and running stringers long ways. I already have bottom work to do so I figured just run em long ways, install an in hull fuel tank and run it. I'm still mulling it over

    • @FishHuntCookTinker
      @FishHuntCookTinker  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Next video will be when I get into bulkheads. Then the next will probably be my plans for the fuel tank and console. I am excited for what I have planned for the fuel tank. I hope my plan will work out. If so I think it will be a lot better than what I had.

    • @smacktalk2753
      @smacktalk2753 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Looking forward to it. Hopefully my topside will end up looking like a shallowsport, or, dargel layout. Batteries under the console, fuel in hull, and only about 8 inches of gunnels. Here in Texas we do a lot of wade fishing, therefore we're in and out of the boat a lot.

      Looking to add 2 or 3 livewells as well.

    • @FishHuntCookTinker
      @FishHuntCookTinker  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That will be awesome when you get done. I thought about doing live wells, but I have a big one I can take on and off the boat. Mine is only 18’6” so I don’t want to take up to much room when I don’t need it. Then again who knows what I will have in the end. I am already changing things up from what I had planned.

    Is there anyway to cut the floor remove foam without redoing the stringers

  • @lawrencefranck9417
    @lawrencefranck9417 ปีที่แล้ว

    I’d bag it and use a dehumidifier. A lot less work.

    I’m doing the same thing my Carolina skiff is 20 years old

      Mine was about 20 years old when it started showing problems. Wish I would have done something about it then. Good luck and thank you for watching!

      @@FishHuntCookTinker those skinny fiberglass bulkheads are so flimsy I’m thinking about cutting them out and replacing with 3/4 coassa bulkheads not so close no foam 3/4 inch Marine ply that I already have it’s been inside drying for several years

    • @FishHuntCookTinker
      @FishHuntCookTinker  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I thought about doing the same. I read ALOT about it and went through about every message board. That was a hot topic with a lot of controversy. I’m going back original. My next video will show more about what I’m doing. It may not be the best or easiest, but just what I decided to do. As long as it floats in the end.

    what was wrong with the boat that led to u having to do this repair?

  • @angeloc3842
    @angeloc3842 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey man appreciate the video 👍🏼 . Did I hear you right?! Once the foam was introduced to air it dried out?! Or was able to release the water??

    • @FishHuntCookTinker
      @FishHuntCookTinker  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It probably would if you had a dry place, a bunch of fans, and a month or two to wait. I ripped all the foam out and replaced it. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    Thanks for the video. Were the individual bulkheads sealed between each other? So if one bulkhead was soaked were the ones on either side of the soaked one also wet?

    • @FishHuntCookTinker
      @FishHuntCookTinker  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching. Yes the voids were sealed between each other original. A lot of mine were deteriorated. Mostly near the back. Water could go right between.

  • @thomascooper193

    What made you not just cut down both sides and roll it up

    • @FishHuntCookTinker
      @FishHuntCookTinker  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wanted to leave the bulkheads intact as I could. I was afraid if I ripped the whole deck up they may come out with it. Then I would be replacing them from scratch. Thank you for watching and commenting!

  • @miketee2444

    No way I would put that foam back just to cause the same issue. I have done this same thing but never wanna do it again.

    • @FishHuntCookTinker
      @FishHuntCookTinker  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I went back and forth a lot on it. I will never put another screw through the deck again. That I can assure you! Also I plan to make a drain path for the water just in case. My main reason for going back with the foam was safety. The lake I fish the most is notorious for having floating logs after a rain. I unfortunately have been riding in someone else’s boat and hit one at night. It didn’t do any real damage, but it was not a good feeling getting back to the landing not knowing. Going back with foam may not be ideal, but it gives me piece of mind. Thank you for watching and commenting!

    Anyone: best grinder blade for cutting fiberglass?

      This is what I used. It worked amazing! Just be prepared for the mess it makes.

    Whens the next video?

    • @FishHuntCookTinker
      @FishHuntCookTinker  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I hope this weekend, but we will see. The weather has been holding me back. I have part of the next two videos done. If they will just deliver my carport things will go much faster. Then I can work in the dry and late into the night. I hope to be able to do a video a week. With a new step of the project in each video. I don’t want to do the same thing in multiple videos. I’m afraid it would just get boring. Hopefully things go according to plan. Thank you for watching!

    You could have poured gasoline or lacquer thinner and the foam would dissolve.

    • @FishHuntCookTinker
      @FishHuntCookTinker  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a good point. Seems like I read somewhere marine foam was resistant to gasoline. I may have to do a experiment and see. Thank you for watching and commenting.

    Why don't you just seal it up when it's done, I want one but looks like it's a common problem. It's kinda stupid design really.

    • @JohnathanFx
      @JohnathanFx 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Everyone thinks that but in reality......Regardless if the foam is soaked or not its still going to float. It still displaces water. Everyone of those channels could be full of water and the boat will float. That the point.
