Jose Carreras is one of my favourite opera singers, along with Placido Domingo, Andrea Bocelli, Joseph Calleja, Jonas Kauffman, and the late Luciano Pavarotti.
Carreras probably didn’t speak enough German but is likely fluent in Italian English and of course Spanish. The great tenor Nicolai Gedda was fluent in 6 languages.

I love Jose Carreras, visited his Concerts in Germany (Stuttgart) often in "open-air Concerts.

Is English the only way they could communicate? As an American I can say both men's English is outstanding!
