What chaos Philip Hayton had to deal with! Anybody who still thinks a newsreader's job has always been easy should look at this. At least today video sources can run from an instant start.
This is a good analogy of a Swan. Frantic beneath the surface yet the part we see is calm. Makes you realise how great these presenters actually are. :)
Err, they do get the choice, a switch under their desk selects open or switched. The vast majority select open and only go to switched during down-the-line interviews to hear the interviewee more clearly. (I was there, shouting "we're on fire!" at 3:17)
As fas as the green typewriter is concerned, you're thinking of the ITV one o'clock news (aka First Report, later the News at One). Search YT for "ITN News at One 1981" and you'll find it.
All newsreaders, whether they work for the BBC, ITN or any other UK broadcaster, hear everything that goes on in the gallery. They're on open talkback, not switched. This is necessary so that they know what's going on without having to be spoken to directly. I've worked on BBC and ITV regional news and a rabble like that over talkback is very common. In such situations, you have to take your own cues because the director is preoccupied with pulling the programme together.
Was the recording of this edition with talkback kept because it was such a shambles? lol. was there an enquiry into why there were so many problems? Having sat in the gallery during news i know its alway pretty manic but this is baaaad! lol
Back then, when Fingerbobs was finished I'd go out into the back garden and put a Smarties lid on a spider's web and then I'd get a slug and put it on the lid. Then I'd wonder why the spider wasn't interested.
OK, we're rolling, Q-gramms Closer from camera one Hold it, hold it That's nice, back a bit Camera two, cut to two Lovely, hold that, hold that, hold that Right, pan in on Ronnie then, come to Ronnie Watch the cello love, watch the cello Mind your boom - for blimey's sake
I could not cope with this! The guy doing most of the talking seems to be stressing out everyone more than anything else! Lady talking seems more in control!
A fascinating glimpse into how live television works. It seem like a shambles n the gallery, but see what goes on the air: it all looks OK. Now you know why on-camera presenters are so well paid. Anyone who has worked in a television studio will find something familiar here, but news broadcasts have to be the toughest of all.
Fuck me, if that was all buzzing in my ear I'd pull the damn earpiece out! Massive thanks to Newsbunny for this upload. I'd no idea it was this bad for them!
Open talkback is common, but some have just a direct link between the director and the newsreader. Back then there was always staff on the studio floor. However the One O'Clock News back then usually had little people in the studio
In BBC News, open talkback was/is standard. Presenters always have the option of switched talkback but only used it during down-the-line interviews to hear the interviewee more clearly. There was one exception who always used switched: M.S., any guesses?
Okay I'm 43. Now do any of you remember being 3 in 71/ 72 in the UK and the BBC One O' Clock News had a typewriter in GREEN momochrome and the music went : da na na naaa, repeat : da na na naaaaaaa. Something like that.

Anchor is amazing. How he deals with all this is amazing
This is a good analogy of a Swan. Frantic beneath the surface yet the part we see is calm. Makes you realise how great these presenters actually are. :)
“TX, have you got ‘Aerospace’??” BZZT! BZZT! “Oh, sod it!”
props to the anchor for going with all this.. true professional!
He only heard a couple of things, like "No VT on this" or "Read on".
haha! "i've got no scripts Mike for christ sake!"
Anyone else feel a bit stressed watching this!?
My god I can barely make conversation in a crowded room! I just cannot imagine doing this job!
Because at this point they were using Quantel DVE gear, which was later replaced by Charisma equipment.
Open talkback is the standard. Newsreaders don't get a choice, they are always hearing everything the gallery is saying.
Err, they do get the choice, a switch under their desk selects open or switched. The vast majority select open and only go to switched during down-the-line interviews to hear the interviewee more clearly. (I was there, shouting "we're on fire!" at 3:17)
"Lead story won't make it -" right away, taking on water!
Makes Drop The Dead Donkey look like a documentary... :)
4.29 "I don't know what I'm doing here."
the best live nwes of the 80s
A proven tactic: Yell until someone fixes it.
ANIMATE QUANTEL OR WHATEVER YOU WANNA DO
it sounds like someone is playing a quizshow next door!
Later that day, the director killed dozens of people with his bare hands.
+Applemask Imagine the people trying to report on that story - it becomes a never-ending spiral of mental breakdown and ritualistic killing.
A N I M A T E Q U A N T E L
Those guys in the control room, or the "gallery," as you'd like to say it, are having a HIVE LOAD of trouble!
"Freeze it! What's he reading? WHAT INTERVIEW??" Some days, better to not even get out of bed!
The "green typewriter" was the ITN News at One on ITV. You can find it here on TH-cam.
As fas as the green typewriter is concerned, you're thinking of the ITV one o'clock news (aka First Report, later the News at One). Search YT for "ITN News at One 1981" and you'll find it.
This gives us a good insight into how the bulletin is prepared.
yay
2:30 WE HAVEN'T GOT ANY STORIES, M8!
2:29 "We haven't got any stories Mike!"
Some newsreaders like "open" talkback (where they can hear everything), since allows them to see any potential troublespots in advance.
The man who appears at 0.51 was on another BBC News clip which was also here

Perhaps because it was Phil's first show?
I could never have worked for a director that stressed out, poor Phillip must have got all that abuse in the ears.
Poor Phil! Why are the animations called 'Quantel' and not 'Charisma' as in other BBC talkback clips on youtube from the same era?
Quantel was the name of the computer. I don't know why they used Charisma in other shows.
Back then, when Fingerbobs was finished I'd go out into the back garden and put a Smarties lid on a spider's web and then I'd get a slug and put it on the lid. Then I'd wonder why the spider wasn't interested.

there's no page eleven

Lady talking seems more in control!
come on mike! dort it out.
"...Oh, sh...hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh..." :D
Where did you get this?
@JamesWindle Just different graphics systems.
No Page 22
@jbjindra Do you mean the BBC interval signal. Search on Google

Yes, very familiar, I was there!
yes, me! what a mess...
Fuck me, if that was all buzzing in my ear I'd pull the damn earpiece out!
Massive thanks to Newsbunny for this upload. I'd no idea it was this bad for them!
The talent didn't hear 99% of this, I guarantee it. No one could concentrate that hard. He only heard the quiet things like "No VT" or "Read on".
Is the open talkback standard in the UK because there was no floor director or stage manager in the studio?
Good question.
Open talkback is common, but some have just a direct link between the director and the newsreader. Back then there was always staff on the studio floor. However the One O'Clock News back then usually had little people in the studio

the DVE was a Quantel?
Yes.
Looks like the transitions are from a mirage and the still graphics were Paintbox in my opinion.
Yes "Quantel 5000", their DVE. In those days a 3 channel one, before Questech Charisma took over.
In This Clip, From 0:12 To 1:56, It Was BBC-TV's BBC News' The 1 O'Clock News Video Open From Thursday Afternoon, December 25, 1986.
Philip Hayton had his turn in 2005 with Kate Silverton - he stormed out because he didn't like her.
I’m Team Philip
@ShutThatDoor He quit because of one particular non-entity, though...
What a shambles.
what's up with the voices on the background?
Stress
Is this the way this aired?
Okay I'm 43. Now do any of you remember being 3 in 71/ 72 in the UK and the BBC One O' Clock News had a typewriter in GREEN momochrome and the music went : da na na naaa, repeat : da na na naaaaaaa. Something like that.
That was ITN's News At One.
the countdown lady sounds kinda hot
Gerry McG. - Yes!
no wonder people are bald and drink cheers
Why don't you let us hear the News- and not that "mouthy" production staff comment ?
