It was because he was on drugs. He was probably so high at that time he can't even remember saying that about Madonna. But he didn't actually apologize! Or maybe he's just saying he loves Madonna because he wants Madonna fans to buy his records.

I think this is just prior to George getting clean from drugs, he says he got clean in march 2008 in post interviews. I'm glad he has stayed sober.
