The top third of the cob has kernels that grow crappy plants. The bottom third of the cob has kernels that grow crappy plants. If you save your own corn seed to plant next years crop always save seed from the middle third of the cobs.

Hey Clarence. Not Bear..but you should be good to go. If there's doubt with your variety just grab a variety that's good for cooler zones like zones 5,6. A good one that I grow (zone 7b) last to be harvested in October is Golden Bantam. A corn hybridized years ago for cooler zones (4,5,6). Since it's much warmer here, it comes up quickly and grows well even when Temps start to drop. Planting this way allows us to have at least 3 different plantings per season.
