What I really enjoy musically about this track is what I think you were trying to say... It isn't easy to listen to. She is singing purposefully just slightly slower and misaligned with the instrumentals. Which makes what should be a lovely swinging waltz into something else. It's actually very clever, I'm just thinking now of the line where she says "we learned the same steps to different dances" I think she says? Which is such a good visual representation of what I think is happening between the vocals and the instrumentation/main melody line. It gives that feeling of disorientation... Which again, she verbalise by saying something about "did you see her wondering around and around like she was lost)... It really captures that almost nauseous feeling of being completely bewildered, confused, out of focus, etc., like after you've been through an intense crying session and it feels like your head is full of cotton wool.
In case no one else says it: this is technically a track 5 and is more personal in nature. It seems like it’s her reaction to the commentary surrounding her break up with Joe. After it was announced, there was a large amount of people asking how it ended or speculating on the ending. I can’t imagine leaving a 6 year long relationship whose touch was your “birthright”, the sense of loss and grief, and having the public incessantly ask (nag) for the details. It sounds traumatic and if you combine that with the “Come one, come all it’s happening again” it gives the impression that her life and her relationships are just circus acts. It’s expected that her relationships will end (and end dramatically) and people feel like they have the right to pull out the popcorn and be amused. I’m trying to remember the other song on the album that mentions or references a circus, but I wonder if that’s intentional/would provide more context.
I always wondered if she may have used Matty in SO many songs as smoke screen to redirect attention from Joe and being under everyone's scrutiny...which would have been very difficult for him.
this song and “chloe or sam or sophia or marcus” are my favorite tracks on the album, they’re just so real and deep and raw and i just wanna hug the music
Basically this is what she goes through every-time a relationship ends. Empathetic Hunger descends and then how did it end? Like everyone wants to know her personal business. 😢

the last lines from its bridge always breaks me. it's so sad 😭
I. AM. OBSESSED. WITH THIS SONG. I love it so much.
It reminds me of "my tears ricochet"
It’s sort of like a slow funeral march. There’s so much pain and dispair.

in Who's Afraid of Little Old Me, she says 'I was tame, I was gentle, til the circus life made me mean', maybe that's what you're thinking of?
It's the 5th track of the second album

This song is true poetry ❤
you NEED to react to her tour !!!!
The melody of this song is so sad and heartbreaking. I just breakdown thinking about stuff listening to it and it has nothing to do with the lyrics.

favorite track out of all 31 for me. i feel like this ballad is maybe similar to some that Harry had on Fine Line idk
This is her saddest bridge wow
But that syncopation in there is so good with those lyrics.
Brilliant phrasing by Taylor!
