Kevin sometimes is the most fun person at the event. Just be like "IDK what the hell is going on but I'm with it" getting just as hype like everyone else.
I went to my first fighting game tourney last month and I was admittedly the lurker at the beginning. But then I was standing right next to this guy around my age who was ALSO lurking. 5-10 mins of just standing there watching matches and I finally said fuck it and introduced myself, said it was my first tournament. Dude looked absolutely RELIEVED and said it was his first tournament too. Played some matches after we got knocked out of bracket and just had a good time, I met some other really cool people too. Jiyuna's right, introduce yourself!! :)
I've run into people who fall under 4/5 of these characteristics lmao They'd never introduce themselves, force their way into your conversation and talk your ear off, mooch off of kindness (especially if food is involved), and then finally say "Oh I'm not even really into ______, I'm here just because it sounded fun/I was in the area." Absolutely cursed encounters.

I met a Kevin, The Chatter, The Lurker, No gamblers yet, and the drifter was a friend of my. To get out of the Lurker Zone(I used to be one) I suggest going to casuals and offer to play that way its not that awkward. If you bad at the game politely ask for tips and if your solid at the game people will respect you and make sure to get player information that way you can build relationships with your community. Or try to go with a friend and if you are that friend make sure to introduce that friend. great Video Jiyuna. I think we need ones for: 6. The Community Dad/Mom the old player who looks out for everyone and everyone respect regardless if he is good or not. 7. The fighting game foreigner the guy who may be a Street Fighter player but has no experience playing Blazblue but likes and ask question just to learn about it. You offer to let him play but he never plays. 8. The comedian the guy who knows how to make everyone laugh and trendset things during tournament. (Jiyuna, Tasty Steve, Aris, Shiosha, and etc) 9. The casual beast is the guy who may not take the game that serious but he can do all the high execution stuff and is solid at everything but he super not hardcore at it. Though his skill proves other wise 10. One and doner the guy who enters a tournament and might be pretty decent to good but never shows up again.
The worst 'The Chatter' variant is 'The Complainer'. Never shuts up about how your character is OP and how his character needs buffs the entire time playing games with you. After he's done playing, he'll give you the same rundown on his thoughts again.
I feel personally attacked for the one time I went to a Fighting Tuesday during a trip and just stood there awkwardly watching matches without talking to anyone. Sorry Jiyuna.
"Gamblers gonna gamble" Couldn't have put it better. If you wanna hang with the gambler, make small bets. Like, not even all the change in your pocket. If he's a true gambler, he'll take the bet. If he's trying to score, it ain't worth his time. Make sure you know the difference between these two subsets of gambler.
This is what I'm looking forward to again for EVO. When EVO started towards the beginning of August they ran alongside DEFCON so there was that warning for folks to be careful using hotel internet. Back in 2016/17 an event called 'Well Rounded' ran alongside EVO weekend. Which was an event aimed for Big Beautiful Women so that weekend the night life spots close by were populated with BBWs.
I used to be the chatter back in the day. Eventually as I got older and clamed down, I got batter at stopping myself once I realized I was nerding out. I REFUSE to make youtube videos. My endless rambles on the topic of French Bread's obscure shovelware back when they were known as Watanabe are for the ears of that poor bastard just waiting for his set ONLY.
@@mikaelamonsterland Believe it or not, they started off making fighting games based off VNs before even Melty Blood! Back in 1998 they made the super budget, but super fun, The Queen of Heart '98. A fighting game featuring chibi version of characters from the VN "To Heart". The game sold enough to get a sequel the very next year, The Queen of Heart '99. Not only was that an improvement on the original, it showed Watanabe's interest in the competitive scene as they took the time to improve the balance further with a second release known as The Queen of Heart '99 SE (Second Edition). Just a year after that We got The Queen of Heart 2001, with the main title of Party's Breaker. This game was quite the interesting one as it now included some characters from the dating sim ComiPa. From there things got even weirder, with Glove on Fight. This basically looked like a newgrounds flash game and had characters from various series including Kanon characters and even Dejiko from Di Gi Charat. The game was far less of a traditional fighter, focusing more on boxing gameplay with a balance of punching and dodging. It did get a sequel that was much improved over the first, but there was something special about seeing Dejiko be a literal gorilla beating the shit out of Ayu for the first time. Legit look up her gameplay. Arms down, no brow havin' gorilla ass pose. Finally they made Melty Blood, saw that sweet sweet parking lot tourney money, and decided they were too good to be called Watanabe anymore and changed to French Bread shortly after. Speaking of Kanon, one of their non-fighting game games from back then was a side scrolling beat 'em up known as Mamono Hunter Mai which was a spinoff from Kanon. It was pretty fun honestly. Other than that they made Air Flight: The 61th Winter(not a typo, that's how it's written on the box art)which I never played. By the looks of it, it's some weird ass Flicky knock-off where you collect egg looking cats and take them to the exit. It's also based off a VN known as AIR. They still made shovelware as French Bread, like Drill Milky Punch which was a competitive top down game with age(porn game devs who made Muv-Luv) characters where you tried to kill more enemies than everyone else but oh man... it's a weird one. I'll leave it to you to look up some gameplay but it's not what you'd expect from a game featuring porn game characters. These games are all on PC since they were mostly doujin tier titles (legit I think they used to debut the games at comiket) but they're so old you might not be able to play on modern hardware. Personally I still cry for my old copy of '99 SE as it sits there, waiting for a Windows 98 PC to play it once more. I really should just set up a Windows 98 sandbox already. I hope you get to play some of these games eventually since they're all pretty fun honestly.
@@Hoarseplay Yeah, it was a huge improvement over the first. They went from flash game to the best feeling punches in any fighter. It added more systems, had way better visuals, and it was just a great game over all.
@@Deleted_Alt I wasn't expecting such a lore dump but that was interesting af so thanks for that! Was playing Melty Blood ReAct today and I remembered it shows Watanabe Productions and Soft Circle French Bread as the developers, I didn't realise they were one and the same.

AWWW HELL NO, haha right bro the raw super in neutral got him what a play. hell I've been that guy when it's a game I don't play, no harm done.
I love seeing the "anime protagonist" this guy is usually the best player out of his friends. This is usually his first tournament, and he is so stoked to show up and make him self known to the scene. He dreams of playing daigo in the finals. He usually ends up drowning in pools, and his weekend is ruined. Also that wedding was at combo breaker 2018. That shit was wild. I have met a Kevin at almost every major I've gone to.
The Foodie: Always snacking something or holding their drink in their hand. Expect to be asked to "get something to eat real quick" at least 3 times that day. The Monogamer: Someone who only plays one game and is only interested in that one game. Doesn't wander around to look at other areas and if there's no one to play he uses a free station to lab. Also, we once had a 65-year old pensioner checking out the tournament in true tourist fashion. He was a pretty friendly and open guy.
Ironically the Lurker is usually the friend of the Chatter brought along probably payed for the Lurker's ticket too, totally not speaking from personal experience.
I'm such a lurker. It takes so much energy to get over my anxiety enough to make it out to any tourney that by the time I'm there, conversation is the last thing I'm wanting to do.
I do recall that Jiyuna was pissed at some point that some bunch of Drifters ransacked his fridge like hyenas and our man suffered the consequence of having to shoulder the hotel charges for those mini fridge stuffs 🤔
I'm a lurker, lol. Normally I'm just happy being around and listening in on people talking. I often find it difficult to engage in conversations, especially when there is already a chatter around, because I don't think that I could add anything of value and I also find it rude to just butt in.
I try to play all the games offered at these tournaments. Even the "obscure" stuff like Arcana Heart or whatever, I always want to give a game a shot even if its like just 3 dudes playing it. I'm like a guy at a buffet.
Kevin's have so much potential. They are like an Evee that gets to decide. Do I want to turn into a gambler?? Should I be a chatterer? Let's hope they don't decide on a drifter
I am the lurker and a chatter combined I am bad at socializing so I stay silent then when somone talks to me about characters I play or stuff I get my 34 hour presentation out.

Don't forget about the shy first timer I was that player once, just went in there and went 0-2 and kept to myself......... until one of the other community TO's came up to me and greeted me and became one of my best friends during my time playing that game, by some miracle he still remembered me 2 years and 3 tags later when I returned to offline play
one of my oldest fgc homies was a straight fucking drifter, hitched a ride with some friends who got a job in LA from Wooster Mass, and he couch surfed for 2 years while spending every day at the tcg shop that i ran tournaments at, no fucking job, didn't even own a bike, still showed up with entry fee to every event.
Haven't gotten to go to a locals yet but this just sounds like every local card shop tournament. I've met all of these types of people at those so I guess I am prepared already
If I showed up in any offline thing I would 100% be a lurker. When I'm in a room full of strangers it might take _hours_ before I'm comfortable saying anything, I'm just here to watch the conversation happen for the most part.
Okay, types 1 and 2 are definitely different varieties of autistic people you'll meet. And I definitely remember being at a Genesis tournament at the San Jose Convention Center where there was a furry convention going on.
I'm kind of both the Kevin and the lurker. Social anxiety means I'm just waiting to find a way to be social but when I do, I'll talk about anything else to not look stupid. You end up making random friends just shooting the shit and being like "I don't even know what this is" once you break through the shyness.
I tend to be a bit of all of these at a tournament depending on context. If I'm watching a game I don't understand I am the lurker. If I'm watching/playing a game I know about I'm the chatter. I don't pursue gambling but if someone asks I'll challenge. If I'm too tired to go back to my room I drift.
I’m the lurker but i don’t talk to nobody and i don’t stand close to nobody, i don’t get involved in conversations. I just love being there and shopping and watching the fights.
I'm gonna be honest with you, guys. There's been moments where I was the drifter and times where I had to deal with drifters, and in my defense I must say that one time I was the drifter I had the money for everything, except the hotel room, so me and my partner coincided with some friends from our same city at the event by chance. The original plan was to crash in a friends' house and then just go to the tournament venue during the event, but since we happened to meet our people there, we just tagged along. However, there were already like 10 people inside the room, and it got very uncomfortable for me and my partner to just stay there (mostly because the heat and *THE SMELL*) but lucky us, we meet this dude who, for some reason, had a room all by himself so he invited us to crash on his room. As for the time we had to deal with a drifter was one time we brought a guy from our local community to a tournament, and he had no money to travel and for the hotel, so we agreed to aid him as long as he will pay us later... He never payed us back, and tbh, bringing him with us was a mistake, because he behaved way too obnoxiously and prick-ish the whole time he was with us...
Oh my god the chatter pass-off used to be known as the Uncle J pass-off in my family... he wouldn't ever stop talking train carriages so the only way to enjoy yourself was to inflict him on others
Shoutouts to the dudes that show up in their work clothes, go 0-2, and leave immediately. 50/50 they either just got off work or had a shift later, but you'll never find out.
lmao i've never been to one of these events, but I applied all this to my party days and can definitely confirm that these types will find you anywhere. Too good.
I cant remember what event it was. but there was a wedding going on basically next door. was hilarious seeing the FGC mingle with people in tuxes and dresses.
Call this a "guilty pleasure", but I kinda like the presence of drifters in hotel rooms and AirBnBs, because it makes it feel as it were a "long after party", seeing everyone chatting and playing games 'til morning. I have no problem with them staying for the night, as long as they respect everyone's personal space and behave cool. As for the expenses, I don't mind them eating snacks or whatever, and if they are honest and nice I'll be glad to treat them some food if needed.
I could find these guys at a normal arcade back in the 90’s. Even the drifter! This guy would be at the arcade daily and never has tokens or quarters. He makes friends and begs for tokens, food and money.
Went to CEO this past June, my first major FGC, as a spectator and sure enough, I met a Chatter as soon as I got in line to enter. lol He was a nice enough dude though, so it was all good.
I made a small tournament and i had 3 kevins on the door wondering what it was and i told them enter for free and play and learn the games. They loved it and came to all the following tournaments it was great
I've met the chatter at the first ceotaku. He was a may player and wanted to know the sol matchup so bad. Even played a few games. I dipped as soon as another sol popped up and went back to..... lurking lol.
I'm the shy guy loner. If I'm not with friends. I'm gonna try to find a spot to be alone. Would I like to hang out sure, but I'm to shy to initiate and ok being alone.
I remember going to CEO 2018 and they had this huge 24 arcade that people would just fucking sleep in. I would hit up the game room around 4-5am because I don't sleep and play games near these passed out dudes saying they were my friend so security wouldn't kick them out. Good times.
Goodtimesahead says, "no need for furry conventions anymore, half the fgc is furry now" I laughed WAY too hard at that shit
what if half the fgc was always secretly furries

One of the mods saying "That KBR tech" when you pull up the Drifter was too funny
Good ol Kevin. I started as one before getting into the fgc.
I'm the chatter, but top player version
Yes, you are. lol At Arcade Odyssey , you blessed us newbies chatting up Smash 4 Pikachu meta with your wisdom outta nowhere. It was awesome. XD
Thanks for the guide Sajam
I cant believe jiyuna saved me from offline events
you should totally redirect the chatter to your opponent rather than your friend. the mental overload might just win you the round
That guy’s never been the same since he started going to those desert festivals :/
I was once a Kevin, but that tournament was so hyped that I started playing fighting games myself
The chatter is the IRL manifestation of “It Follows” but apparently also goes to Burning Man every year.
The renter:
The player you see at every local who never has his own controller
I’ve only been to two fighting game tourneys thus far and it was right before the pandemic so I’m taking notes for the future. Thanks Junior 👍🏽
3 years later and I turned into the gambler at EVO 2024 for Third Strike Top 6, thank you Jiyuna
I’m stuck next to the chatter on the alpha 3 cabinet at summer jam right now! Nice guy but god help me!
lmao
Oh my god the chatter pass-off used to be known as the Uncle J pass-off in my family... he wouldn't ever stop talking train carriages so the only way to enjoy yourself was to inflict him on others
The tech.
@@ANIMEILLUMINATI jD
Damn, I've only been to one tourney and when my friend left I became the lurker LMAO
Shoutouts to the dudes that show up in their work clothes, go 0-2, and leave immediately. 50/50 they either just got off work or had a shift later, but you'll never find out.
Lol, I'm just the one guy who never talks to no one, is always on the phone and is just waiting for his matches.
“What’s a guilty gear?”
-Kevin, probably
lmao i've never been to one of these events, but I applied all this to my party days and can definitely confirm that these types will find you anywhere. Too good.
I’m the “voyeur.” Wait for the upload and steal the tech.
Genesis 3 was my first super major and it was the same day as FurCon. They really needed directional signs…
8:30 That's not a drifter, he's just a mooch.
I cant remember what event it was. but there was a wedding going on basically next door. was hilarious seeing the FGC mingle with people in tuxes and dresses.
The only thing I can think of to top that is an _FGC Wedding_ 🤔 lol
Someone took Guile's advice to heart.
I'm the worst hybrid: lurker until you open me up and then I go hardcore chatter.
As an old man, I want no one in my room besides me. I need my sleep.
I could find these guys at a normal arcade back in the 90’s.
Even the drifter! This guy would be at the arcade daily and never has tokens or quarters.
He makes friends and begs for tokens, food and money.
Oh man. This was so good already then you hit the Kevin. Propelled by vibes.
Then you have me. The Coomer
Went to CEO this past June, my first major FGC, as a spectator and sure enough, I met a Chatter as soon as I got in line to enter. lol
He was a nice enough dude though, so it was all good.
I was a Kevin before. But my name is Pedro
Not even fighting games.
I just used to _WORK_ with a chatter. Chill guy, but dude NEVER shut up lol
@@13Kr4zYAzN13 people forget it's the workplace where you meet them first.
Jiyuna, i never thought i would say this, but jiyuna is my fav content creator period lol these videos just make my day
I'm the shy guy loner. If I'm not with friends. I'm gonna try to find a spot to be alone. Would I like to hang out sure, but I'm to shy to initiate and ok being alone.
the Drifter probably plays Hulk in UMVC3
I remember going to CEO 2018 and they had this huge 24 arcade that people would just fucking sleep in. I would hit up the game room around 4-5am because I don't sleep and play games near these passed out dudes saying they were my friend so security wouldn't kick them out. Good times.
This video made me realize how Im jinxed when it comes to major offline tournaments. All of the ones I planned on going I couldn't for some reason
F*** Jiyuna, lool. You're da best, haven't laughed this hard in a long time.
Remember meeting all these types even at fightingtuesday
