My mom has had a history even in her middle aged years of assuming that someone was stealing something from her or giving something and then saying that she didn't give it to them. So, I cannot say that all that I am seeing is new, but dementia issues are now solidly in the mix. She is very suspicious in the evenings and nights of someone trying to take something in the shop and even a time or two at a neighbor's home and she has gone over there in the wee hours with a gun to keep thieves from taking their stuff. With the paranoia and taking a gun out to try to defend things, I worry. This is particularly concerning when she goes to the neighbors like this because they may think she is a prowler and she will be thinking there is a thief and either side could pull a trigger and regret it. Initially, I felt like she was clear thinking enough to be on her own, but not so much any more as yet another round of deep paranoia is occurring where she thinks a neighbor that has always reached out to help her when she needs it is now being accused of being a thief about something that mom has mentioned often as being something she gave him and she is back on high alert about that shop again. I would love to take her guns out of the equation for everyone's safety.
