So sad. I had a client whose wife died and he didn’t know how to do anything in the home. I was often on the phone with him and looked up college courses for those that needed help and company. He signed up for a cooking course first. I was a road traffic litigator of all things. I often think of him.

      @@landang7906 Hi,
Your questions are valid. I think at first he lied about his name until he felt a connection with her. Once he realizes that connection he felt comfortable revealing his real name. He might have eventually told her where he lived. Maybe the director didn't show that part to the audience. We might have to assume she did get his address and then called an ambulance. I think keeping him on the phone talking is a priority in her profession. I hope that answers your question. I just loved that the conversation she had with John might have had something to do with her being on a date with the guy in her office.

Suicide always is the cowardly approach. You think you're escaping your pain, but in reality you're just traumatizing the people you leave behind, leaving them to bear the pain for the rest of their lives. As someone with suicidal thoughts and impulses for 20 years, this awareness is what held me back. I knew I'd be punishing everyone else to escape my pain. We all have pain. I lost my brother 2 years ago he took his life after his wife died from covid, the deep sadness I feel for his loneliness and his desperation will be with me for a very long time. I will always feel guilty that my attention and love for him wasn't enough. All we can do is love them.

Wow. Sally Hawkins is outstanding. Her subtle expressions cut right through to the soul. I used to volunteer for hopeline. We were trained on active listening. Not to give advice just verbalize that you acknowledge their feelings. So important. If there's an indication that someone has hurt themselves We were instructed to as more pointed questions. And try to find their address. It's true what she said they don't trace calls.

I do watch a lot of short films be that Dust, Omeleto or other independent films. I'm very familiar with the seasoned actors, but I've never had the privilege of watching Sally Hawkins until now. This was such an emotionally charged & powerful piece of work to see unfold, it certainly brought a lump to my throat, to see the crisis line volunteer frantically trying to work out through her files where Stanley/John lived before the pills really kicked in. This was an expertly crafted production to watch.

What a kind and compassionate soul Sally Hawkins played here & with SO much heart!! God Bless Her Kind -Those who give of themselves to comfort another in need!! The ones who do good work in these crisis centers, definitely get drained after a hard days work, I would imagine. But they can take comfort in knowing that when Karma comes around, they'll deserve the goodness they gave out.
"Kindness & Compassion" is such a wonderful Combination of The God Within us!! I believe GOOD & GOD are ONE, & although we all have good within us, some of us most defiantly have more, than others for sure. "Be Kind whenever possible, and it's always possible" - The Dalai Lama. What a lovely Film!!✌

Wonderful character actor. Film evokes emotion and stops time for the viewer. I love short films. They are very often more powerful that two hours of a full length feature.

As wonderful as Sally Hawkins is in this performance, I think the moments when she says nothing, especially when not being seen by her love interest, is astounding. Jim Broadbent is so believable, so captivating, so true as he goes from emotional to gentle surrender. Edward Hogg's nuanced playoff from Sally's presence is amazing. As someone who's dying (probably in a few month, but who knows) the thing that's on my mind very often is making sure I give all that I have to those who appreciate it. I have both stories and objects to give to anyone and everyone, and occasionally specific someones (though I have no younger family, and only my dad left, and he's not going to be around much longer either as he's 80 with a very bad heart). So, yes, if you're around someone who's on their way out, even if it's artificially induced (if it's done with compassion and respect for themselves), you can help them immensely by finding value in whatever they have to share.

I thought this a beautiful story and true to life. Not everyone is saved and the ending is happy ever after. The young woman is shy, but feels the sorrow of the man calling. He dies, but his wife joins him and they are joyful together. The last scene shows Heather nervous, but breaking free of shyness and timidly kissing. Perhaps her time helping others is growing her emotions and diminishing her shyness?
