Thanks Terry I got this ship a couple of days ago and have been awaiting your thoughts. Coming from German BB's so its been better than my other experience with US battleships. I love the 16inch rifles (brawling without having secondaries to shoot is weird though) and she turns better than some of my heavy cruisers. I set her up for max AA defence and have lost all fear/respect for carriers - 'Clear Skys' all the way
An AA build is actually not a bad choice for this ship - unfortunately, you don't always get CV games. She might have a specialized niche for division play. Be careful with the armour, though, if you're coming from German BBs. She does melt away quickly under large-calibre fire.

That was kinda my first reaction as well. I was expecting a hybrid-German BB, maybe with better secondaries. I guess one problem is that the historical Massachusetts had the standard 127mm / 5'' 38L secondaries, and the next lower calibre was a bristle of 40mm and 20mm guns, but none of the 100mm AA cannons we often see as auto-secondaries. I definitely would have liked longer-range secondaries, and that would have been justifiable with advanced fire control radar (she even has the parabolic antenna in the artwork). Ideally a set of auto-secondaries as well, but I guess they went with the AA improvements / DOT tanking as her gimmick, but with an imo steep price to pay (main guns range + nerfed secondaries)
The escalator was invoked for the NC guns, but the SD were the first designed under the escalator and got better armor. The NC was only armored up until 14” guns where as doctrine was to armor up to your guns.
I have been having a bit of fun with my Massachusetts. I built it slightly different than this and boy is it fun. I put the secondary build/AA in the first slot, with acceleration and steering for the next two. This gives me more AA range and Secondary range, and then with my captain, I went with a 4th precise aim, and Buffed the AA in slot 7. Taking the 4th Precise Aim means my Massachusetts is not missing out the precision of the main turrets from slot 1. Now my Massachusetts is mega secondary with killer AA. And to add since I posted this. I have brawled a Black Bismark within my expanded secondary range and removed a good 3/4 of his health pool before another player deleted him with torps. So if you buff the secondarys, it can be a fun ship lol
They are both good ships. Get Bama and Massa will fall from your “want” list to your “I have no real interest in this” list. See my comparison of them in my above comment.

That map needs a good team to win. One lemming train, one BB that decides to go island hopping, and you're done for. You need DDs to spot, CAs in island positions, and BBs in open water covering the angles. I can't even count how many times we lost by capping on this one. It's very unforgiving.
@@FunandGameswithTerry completely, I run up with a dd in the middle of the map and see no one for quite awhile generally. I wish they didn't have maps like this personally.
You pronounced her name correctly - Mass-a chu (chew) - setts. If you ever have occasion to visit MA, she is beautiful & quite worth a tour. She is located in Fall River, a bit over an hour from Boston. The Kitty Kat (Akatsuki) is pronounced Ah-cat-sue-key, but good try. Despite it not being a wonder ship compared to the other ships you noted, it looks good enough for me to still want it. Although I completed the event challenge & bought a lot of event crates, I’m still short by 7 tokens. Have you anything from War Gaming to indicate she will eventually show up in the shipyard or for sale? That seems like my only hope of getting her. :-(. Thank you for the review. It was fun.
I don't have anything on her turning up in the shipyard, but usually, premiums surface eventually, in events or bundles. Tbh if you use the gold to kit out a North Carolina with her historical camo, you'd end up with a ship that's probably at least as good as the Massa.
I've actually been on this ship IRL and slept on it for a night! It was absolutely amazing. I went to Battleship Cove in Fall River MA in case you wanted to know Too bad I don't have it in wowsb tho 😐

The battle from the intro was too short in the end to include in the review, but too good to leave out. But don't try this against BBs. Colorado or NC on rapid reload will shred you to bits.
I am a pc wows player and yes she is a monster there by self....but I am going to argue she is BEST t8 BB here for random...Terry sir hear me out ...I'm new to blitz but...people gravitate to this ship...it's AA it's Auto secondaries make them feel safer...so they gather round the MASS...which helps unwittingly them to work as a team a..lil bit more. Enough it's noticable. Test my theory buddy..I'ma big fan of you contributions to to this community ...run mass X times vs Bama/ carolinaY times..
At least you know what she can do if you're playing against her :) I don't have her in my personal account - didn't have time over the weekend for the challenge, and I don't play recreationally on press, so at least you won't be facing me in it any time soon :)
Alabama without secondaries and a name i cant say 😝😆 Dont care about gamblecrates.. but american premiums have one problem.. no rapid reload, so they lack dmg in the important moments
For Alabama with a full range/precision build, I'm ok with that. The super-heavy shells are really good at plunging. But if I can have a tech tree ship with better range, better secondaries and only slightly weaker AA - the NC - I'm finding it hard to see her viable outside niche / division play, e.g. with a CV

@@dudditz Alabama is actually really strong. I have nearly all t8 bbs including Roma, Richelieu, Black NC, Kii, Bismarck, Tirpitz and others. Alabama is probably 1 of the most competitive choices. Sure, she's not brokenly overpowered like Roma, but with a maxed captain she isn't afraid of cv and with precise aim you will sometimes land all 9 shells at a bow in Richelieu 14 km from you (with a juicy citadel very often), let alone anyone broadsiding. Alabama has been solid for me in random battles and ranked. Precise aim actually lets you deal more dmg than crappy mk1 reload. In over 300 games in Alabama, I have av. dmg in her at 65k and growing, while the winrate is 72% ( I do play a lot of games in platoons, so it improves winrate) Very solid ship and I highly recommend her. Massachussets definitely looks like a nerfed Alabama with better aa. Didn't interest me at all
Alabama is one of the best T8 BBs. As far as damage output, it makes up for a slow reload by having very high AP damage that is very accurate. But, if you must have rapid reload in a t8 US BB get the Black North Carolina. It also that has the longest range of any t8 ship coupled with good dispersion and reasonable armor. “Only accurate rifles are interesting.” - Col. Townsend Whelen
Why did they have to massacre my favourite ships from PC? Look at Alaska and Massa. Alaska is one of the best cruisers in PC, and Massa, oh Massa, the most fun ship I've had in PC! Look at how bad they are in blitz. Whyyyyy

Why oh why did they change the flavor of this ship from the PC version? It’s a close quarters monster there.

Like Alaska, this ship looks great in historical camo scheme. Even if you can’t fight, looking good in port is important.

it is a nightmare of the cv and dd if you build secondary range and torpedo dmg reduction, their fatal weapons are just joke then.
