Hyper-Reality | The Great Gaslight, Ep. 3 | James Lindsay & Michael O'Fallon

  • We are in the process of transitioning from an analog, objective, real, physical world into a digital, subjective, surreal world.
In that transition into a digital subjective world, we are experiencing a transformation of what is accepted as reality, when it isn’t reality: it is synthetic.
In this discussion enters Jean Beaudriallard and his understanding of hyperreality the creation of synthetic reality, which is not reality at all: it is the creation of something that is more real than real.
It is beyond propaganda, but propaganda is certainly utilized.
It is the creation of simulacra and simulation.
And in this world of simulacra, we are being told to ignore objective reality and embrace hyperreality: an unreality that has no connection with that which it claims to represent.
Our way of life, our media, our news and our body politic are now guided by the ever-changing synthetic world of the hyperreal.
Hyperreal is defined by Dr. James Lindsay as “more real than real” or not bearing any true qualities to the original.
As we examine the world around us, we begin to suspiciously consider that the world in which we live in is undergoing a major cultural transformation-one leading to a widespread lack of stability, an increase in moral relativism, and a rejection of objective truth.

Listening to this on the road today. I remember, due to an unfortunate divorce, which I didn't initiate it, but I couldn't reconcile it either, that, I got deep into World of Warcraft. I was still in the Military and had returned from a deployment in Iraq and my wife had returned from a deployment in Afghanistan. After the separation all I did was play WoW. I became completely addicted, even though I wouldn't admit it. I went from someone who went to Muay Thai three to four times a week, to just paying for a membership I never used. I put down my guitar and didn't pick it for almost 6 years. I started gaining weight and went from Outstanding PT scores to nearly failing the test. Even after I retired in 2008, it was probably not till 2010 that I finally realized how toxic it all was. I've dabbled a couple of times since then, but never like I had. Now, for the last few years I'm almost completely video game free. I'm back in shape. Back to Muay Thai. I'm playing guitar again, and I'm reading much of what Dr. Lindsay has been reading on his podcasts over the last year since I discovered him while trying to figure out what this whole CRT thing was about. Thank you both for everything you've done to help save this nation from this Marxist-Satanist dogma that is deluding millions.

    • @jefffinkbonner9551

It’s too much CGI and the near universal disappearance of celluloid film (70mm, 35mm, etc) in favor of full digital. There’s a great video essay here on TH-cam talking about the movie Interstellar from like 2014. He talks about how James Cameron went to great lengths to use as much real cinematography as possible and shot the movie on 70mm film. The plot of the movie involves Kevin Kosner’s character being faced with the existential crisis of the world as he knew it ending while he attempts to maintain a connection with the old ways. He pilots the spaceship himself instead of using auto pilot, etc. The director kind of vicariously lived in the character.
I had only seen the movie once in theaters years earlier, but I remember really liking it and thinking it was an extremely well-made movie and stood rather alone as one of the few films I actually enjoyed from the last 10 years or more. Now I understand why. The image composition is wonderful and very pleasant to see. 70 and 35mm film is a treasure! Screw digital- it just isn’t the same.

No intention to be hostile but the abuse of language issue... I have to point out that when you call a "transwoman" "she," you are misusing language. Dalrymple explained all this well.
“Political correctness is communist propaganda writ small. In my study of communist societies, I came to the conclusion that the purpose of communist propaganda was not to persuade or convince, not to inform, but to humiliate; and therefore, the less it corresponded to reality the better. When people are forced to remain silent when they are being told the most obvious lies, or even worse when they are forced to repeat the lies themselves, they lose once and for all their sense of probity. To assent to obvious lies is in some small way to become evil oneself. One's standing to resist anything is thus eroded and even destroyed. A society of emasculated liars is easy to control. I think if you examine political correctness, it has the same effect and is intended to.” ― Theodore Dalrymple

38:03 Analytic Synthetic Dichotomy thrust upon you, don't fall victim. As much as Yaron B. Bugs the F out of me, you might want to suffer his idiosyncrasies and have a chat. If you film it is your jam, but something make me think you might have already had this discussion. I'm probably wrong in my connections but not ideological end, he could be of help in a way you haven't anticipated yet and for reasons he should be able to provide.

Thesis: In your quest to defeat the windmill, if you engage in any kind of dialogue (or dialectic) you have already lost to the windmill.
First of all, why do I put it in these terms, why do I summon some kind of windmill here? It's because you are gaming. You don't know that you are gaming, but you are. You have manufactured a villain, whatever that may be (me/sjws/nazis/crts/theists/atheists/ignoramuses/murderers/etc), and some kind of oppression or source of victimhood at the hands of the villains. Gamers understand this. I'm also gaming as I'm writing this, I don't deny it.
I will tell you why you lose if you engage: The moment I ask you "what is a reality?", you have lost. This is because at that moment, whether you would like to or not, some neurons are firing in your head to come up with some kind of formulation. This is a subjective formulation. When I point out that this is a subjective formulation, you will say that everybody either agrees or can be convinced to agree. So, according to your formulation of reality, anytime some undefined number of subjective opinions correspond with eachother, that opinion becomes promoted to objective reality. Or, the difference between reality and unreality is quantitative, not qualitative. If an insufficient number of people's opinions correspond, they are in unreality, or hallucinating.
Fair, there is no contradiction in this .
But, then I ask, does reality exist inspite of humans, or human beliefs, or opinions, or subjective analyses. If you say yes, we have encountered a contradiction. To understand this contradiction, first ask, will reality exist after the last person dies? You may say yes. Now I ask you once again, "what is a reality?" and once again some neurons fire to come up with some formulation. To whom do those neurons belong? Who is asking "what is a reality" and who is constructing a formulation, absent any humans?
Now the vision of the evil windmill and its oppression dances like a mirage in your head and you cry: "But, when that master puts the lash upon the back of the slave is that pain not real?" And given this pain, or oppression, you tell the slave to go on a heroic quest to fight the windmill. Supposing the slave heeds your clever advice, it will become a master. But, what happens when all of the slaves become emancipated by fleeing towards the windmill? Will the cotton spontaneous appear from the ether and line up on the shelf in an orderly manner for all of the masters' consumption? Ah. but in a free market those who pursue the eternal windmill, that is to say those minority who heed your advice, will become the masters and the rest, the evil ones, won't, and they will deserve their whip. This is how we solve the problem of how the cotton gets to the shelves. This is fair. There is also justice in this because the good advice heeders become the masters and the evil non-heeders get the whip.
There is something missing, that is the question of what is that enigmatic thing called "pain"? The master makes the physical motion to crack the whip and the slave experiences the pain, and we say that the master is "responsible" for the pain. This responsibility is misplaced. The master simply exploits the propensity of the slave to experience pain, or hunger, or cold etc. in order to motivate it. Who is responsible for the propensity? Maybe it's some breeding selection process that has caused this because of the questing utility of pain. Or, it was a "gift" from God, or the two heroes that collided their genital together on their heroic quest to conquer the windmill. Calling it a gift is a funny joke because gift implies some kind of consent or some kind of desire on the part of the receiver to receive the gift. But, there can be no desire or consent absent the gift being given. The gift recursively forces its own desire for the gift.
The gift is responsible for the slave's pain, not the master. Indeed, the master is a subject to the same gift. The gift is the whip. And, the real master is God. It is easy to be upset at God for the whip gift, until you realize that God is also on a heroic quest to conquer the windmill. God is on this quest against its will, just as the God before it, the God that created God was also on the quest against its will. Gamers understand this.
