Since the bevel is already at 45 deg, it is best to just add 2 deg or so. If you have built the sharpening stop board we talk about you can just use the 1/8" shim off the 45 deg stop and that will give you a good offset. Thanks for watching.

For those who posted negative comments, it's obvious you don't understand the icons in the lower right of the video. You can mute the audio, you can use closed captions instead, and you can speed up the video. Instead of complaining about something you do have control over, learn how TH-cam works. Damn ignoramuses.

Keep in mind: a planed surface, and a scraped surface (even w a burr)!are two different things. I can usually tell the difference after finishing. My new rule is: finish everything with a hand plane if possible!

That's great, except for highly figured wood which must be planed cross-grain, which leaves a slightly rough surface. Contrary to the Lie Nielson guy, I firmly advocate turning a cutting edge on the scraper plane with a burnisher. This will produce a shaving and leaves a clean, abrasion-free surface in pretty much any wood.

This guy really knows his stuff. I come here when in doubt or to see Vic Tessolin from The competition.

is there any advantage of using a Scraping Plane compared to a traditional plane?
it appears like they achieve the same objective.

I was taught by good instructors in school and hung out all I could with grandfather who did finish trim and cabinet making. He never took it to the varnish stage because he had a crew that followed him that scraped, sanded, and varnished or painted. The school instructors may not have had time to show all this bench plane stuff , plus I never knew of a scraper plane until a few years ago. Simply because I didn't know how to set up a number 4 or any plane correctly I made finish work much harder than was needed with sandpaper. My oldest son at16 gets excited over learning how these planes saves time, energy, sawdust, and makes shavings he gives to his Sweet Thang for her rabbit. I don't have one of these scraper planes "YET"!$?$ Just to try N see I may machine a scraper frog and put it in a junk plane and give it a whorl . I realize making a frog and putting in a parts plane isn't the same as what was being Demo ed here but it should beet a hand scraper.

I love seeing the "experts" crawl out of the woodwork to give their opinions.

A closeup of the scrapings/shavings needs to be shown. From a distance, it looks like the plane without a hook produces a fine powder. It seems to me that in this case you may just as well sand. That's why my #112 has been collecting dust on my shelf for 7 or eight years. There is another video out there on You Tube in which a burr is created and then burnished into a hook. The demonstrator produces some shavings which are shown in closeup and reveals very fine shavings. To me, at least, this is a more preferable result. I plan to use this setup and perhaps the impression of the plane in the dust on my shelf will disappear. The site is called "onewaytoturn" an d I think he does an excellent narration. It's more matter of fact and a little less annoying than the Lie-Nielson guy, who reminds me of Mr. Rodgers addressing a group of six year olds.
